BREAKING NEWS: Sean Singletary Traded to Suns for D.J. Strawberry

Phoenix Suns

The Terry Porter era of Suns basketball is in full effect. Before coaching a single day, he and GM Steve Kerr have revamped this lineup and reoriented the Suns’ focus to playing both sides of the ball with equal tenacity. After Kerr added Shaq during the season, Phoenix chose the defensive-minded big Robin Lopez with their fifteenth selection to fortify the front lines. And this summer, they’ve inked a gritty PG in Goran Dragic – who once held Tony Parker to two points when he was guarding for former Finals MVP during an international game.

Now, Phoenix has taken another step towards strengthening their D. They’ve sent D.J. Strawberry to the Rockets in exchange for Sean Singletary – a kid they like because of his defensive fearlessness.

“Sean gives us depth at the point guard spot,” said Suns President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Steve Kerr. “We like his instincts and his ability to run a team. He also puts a lot of pressure on the ball defensively.”

What do you think about the Suns new emphasis on D? Is that the right approach for this team?

  1. doc says:

Good move.My youngbuck is nice out there on D and he will step his O game up in the league once he gets broke in.

  2. tw says:

Sean is going to pick up a few things from Nash. He is tough as nails, can’t wait to see him torch the league.

  3. Franchise Baller says:

i liked them both but great trade for the suns. Sean should be able to help out with the perimiter shooting to.

  4. Franchise Baller says:

wait ever mind about the shooting thing lol i got him mixed up wit singleton

  5. Brown says:

As long as Nash isn’t on D in the final minutes, they should be ok. They needed defenders to spell Nash when teams decide to take it to Nash when he’s on D.

  6. David Brandon says:

whats funny is how nice sean’s gonna be and the kings let go of another pg. they’ll probably draft another 6′6″ sg/sf who weighs 135lbs.

  7. Austin Burton says:

If it was purely about defense, Phoenix would have kept DJ Strawberry, who’s a great defender. He’s just not quite a point guard. Seems like they just don’t wanna come out and say “Steve sucks defensively, and Singletary will actually guard the other team’s point guards.”

  8. Willis says:

In other news, I stubbed my toe today.

“Willis has been in a slightly uncomfortable state since the incident happened, but we hope he can put pressure on his toe. We like his intensity and his ability to maintain his feet.”

Singletary’s contract was partially guaranteed where as Strawberry’s wasn’t so from the Rox POV this is just cost cutting. Now they can cut DJ and not take a really small cap hit.

  9. James says:

This should mean more playing time for Alando Tucker, so that’s good.

  10. Jimbo says:

Holy hell – this move is gonna shake up the West! Damn, the Lakers and Hornets are in real trouble now. Oh wait…

  11. Spliff 2 My Lou says:

If the Rockets cut Strawberry he could be a option for Cleveland or as the possible replacement for Childress in Atlanta.

  12. Luigi says:

goood job for PHO. Singletry kan ball…i saw him play live @ UVA…n im tellin ya..the only reason why he almost got drafted and suprised ppl by getting drafted..is his UVA team sucked..big time..its was like T-Mac in Orlando…no support..

but this guy can make it n im glad hes learning from steve nash

  13. the_don_mega says:

    D.J. aint worried ’bout anythin’… cat’s got a hot gurl anyways… LOL

  14. Magnifico says:

Like Singletary’s game. Good move for Suns.

  15. Celts Fan says:

yes it’s the right approach! Nash gives you NONE, Amare is good at weak-side blocks and that’s about it. You need to surround those guys w/ defensive players to cover up those weaknesses. DJ = poor man’s Raja, so Singletary was a nice get to solidify the PG spot behind Steve, Leandro (who’s a 2,) and Goran.

  16. Ansonious says:

@ Brown Have you ever watched a suns game without Steve Nash in the final minutes, let me guess you took the short bus to school, ate lead paint chips as a kid, and your retarded to think about benching a two time mvp in the final minutes of a game. YOUR DUMB, DUMB AS HELL!

  17. Brown says:

    Wow, internet gangster alert!

    @Ansonious

If you’re playing in the final minutes of a game, trying to protect a lead, and the other team is abusing your worst defensive player, yes, you take him out of the game. If you’re down, that’s a different story.

Don’t question my intelligence asshole. I could throw my degrees and salary in your face, but unlike you I don’t need to belittle people to make myself feel better.

Use your brain before opening your mouth dude and don’t make assumptions about people you don’t know. It actually makes YOU look retarded.

  18. Ansonious says:

    Uh oh cool guy alert

  19. Ansonious says:

But you are right about the protecting the lead scenerio kudos!

  20. Shannequa says:

    Lol @ Jimbo

  21. George W Kush Sr says:

Breaking News indeed, i almost fell out of my seat.
Hands down the biggest trade of the offseason, maybe even the year… I still cant get over it.

  22. Dave says:

I like what Steve Kerr has done with the bench. Lots of energy guys (Lopez, Admunson, Barnes, Singletary) who play defense and hustle. Good role players.

They’ll help spark some of those older bodies like Nash, Hill, Raja, Shaq. Plus you still have Diaw and Barbosa to provide a lot of your offensive needs off the bench.

I think Kerr has overlooked one slot though, I thought he needed a shooter on the wings. They ran into a few problems with their declining number of shooters following the Shaq trade, and badly needed both a replacement and an upgrade for Goran Giricek. Instead they signed Matt Barnes. They needed more shooting, I think that will come back to bite them later on in the season.

Overall he’s done a very good job providing role players around their best players.

  23. Jerry says:

rockets got the better. even tho suns get shooter, they dont really need sean…rockets defesne gonna be crazy stronggggggggggggggggggggggg, with the scoring of tmac yao ron. they are gonna make the finals in 2 years!
