Carmelo Anthony on the Olympics, Missing His Son and What’s on His iPod

You might see Carmelo Anthony fifty, sixty, or if you’re a dedicated Nuggets fan eighty times a season. As fans, it’s natural to feel like after all that time spent watching ‘Melo (or any other professional athlete) do his thing in the hardwood, we get to know him pretty well. So how would you describe him? Laid back and soft spoken off the court? Fierce and unrelenting on it?

The New York Times caught up with ‘Melo in Beijing to get his take on the Olympic Games and what’s going through his head when he’s not crashing the glass against the rest of the world.

“Fatherhood has matured me and opened my eyes up to a lot of things. It’s made me realize that every decision that I make reflects on him, good or bad.

I’ve had to rely on some gadgets to get me by with all the travel. I downloaded 5,000 songs on my iPod. I have 13,000 or 14,000 songs on it right now. I have a box of DVDs. I have a lot that I haven’t even heard of that I’ve been watching.

But the best technology is Skype, which lets me call home and talk to my son. I think that’s the best thing that’s happened to me and some of the other players on this team. We have it set up with video here, and I had it set up back home. Right now, my son doesn’t really understand what’s going on. But he knows my voice and he hears my voice and he’s starting to put the picture and the voice together a little bit.”

Naw, just trippin. Good to see dude gettin his fatherhood thing on. Marriage and Kids seem to help many NBA cats mature. Granted it don’t help em all. But some really take to them and wise up and take their life and others a bit more seriously.

  5. Young Lebron 23 says:

That’s a real nice piece there with Melo.

  6. Wanabballer says:

Now if we could only make him play some D…

  7. Logan Light says:

I appreciate you guys running this story. Melo got a crazy amount of bad press at the end of last season. It’s nice to know that these ball players we hold up on pedestals are REAL people.

Guess that’s what DIME is all about though, eh? The player. The game. The life.

  8. David Brandon says:

melo’s a good dude. he just makes some poor decisions sometimes like any of us would. his decisions are just that they end up bein put on blast. last time i got a speeding ticket, my face wasnt on yahoo. the last time one of you took that girl home, it wasnt on tmz. lol i’m just sayin…a lotta times on here, ppl just be grillin dude and i’m like yo, he’s 25, 7 and 3. its about hoop at the end of the day, right? its not like any of us really KNOW him…outside of that jab step pull up from just inside the arc. lol!

  9. doc says:

And he only 24 years old.

  10. Jimmy says:

Yea i like Melo he’s a good player and gets it done on the court. Glad to know he has a kid hopefully that will make him more mature.

Did he have the kid with Lala????

  11. Brown says:

I didn’t see anything that mentioned what’s on his ipod, just how many songs are on it.

  12. Jimmy says:

    @Brown
What’s on his ipod is 14,000 songs!!!!!!!!

  13. iain08. says:

i’d describe him as a fat puss

  14. Godzilla says:

  15. Luigi says:

    Melo’s all grown up…=]

not he needs Tom thibdeou or whatev the C’s D coach is..to come to Denver

  16. daquest?on says:

@ godzilla na, melo is half puerto rican carmelo is a spanish name

  17. asmaticasiatic says:

As far as I know melo isn’t married yet, besides marriage don’t mean much in the league; I’d bet about 96% of the league b smashing other dips on the side. Exceptions may be Yao ming, Tim Duncan and shane battier..

  18. Diego says:

Just when is he getting married? He and Lala have been engaged about since Melo has been in the league. I don’t think it’s a matter of saving up dough for the wedding, so such a long engagement is crazy. Get it done, man.

  19. E$ says:

…and yet he still doesn’t marry LaLa. I guess his eyes not all the way open
