Best Three-Point Shooters Of the Last 20 Years
Ray is a 1-seedAmong the many ridiculous debates that rage on in the Dime office – i.e. Would Billy Hoyle give Bobby Hurley the hot plate? – occasionally we will have a legitimate discussion. This is one of those times. We’ve eliminated all preposterous suggestions (J.J. Redick, Bruce Bowen, Patrick Cassidy, etc.) and have narrowed the field to the best 16 shooters of the last 20 years to determine who is the best shooter of this generation.
Aside from having a ratchet, the only criteria we used was that each player did the majority of their damage within this time frame.
We’ll tally your votes in the comments section and play off to No. 1…
Larry Bird Bracket

Out of all your contests, Dime, this one is by far the easiest: Reggie Miller is the Usaine Bolt winner of the group. Let me highlight that stat-line: 2,560 3PM with a 39.5% completion rate. The only guy that comes close is Mr. Ray Allen, but we all know who Mr. Clutch is when it comes to the long-ball, and that’s Reggie.

This one would be close, but nobody could touch Reggie back in the day… Remember the game against the Knick were he stole the inbounds and hit a three, stole the next inbound pass and step back to hit 3 and then two free throws to win it. That was just sic, but back then could could actually mug somebody and it wasn’t a foul.

Big V says:
Ray takes this in a close one with Reggie. I agree with sans’ comment about the 3-point shootout. You can really tell who’s got a stroke when they either find or don’t find that rhythm. Reggie never looked comfortable out there just mechanically shooting ball after ball. And as for the clutch factor, Ray’s hit plenty of clutch shots, they’re all over youtube if you haven’t taken a look. Reggie was obviously playing deeper in the playoffs than Ray and so it may seem like he was doing bigger things. Like I said, this is a very close one, but I’m going with my boy Shuttlesworth.

Reggie Miller – 18 years; 2560 3PM, 39.5% 3FG
Ray Allen – 12 years; 2100 3PM, 39.7% 3FG
May I highlight the fact that up until now, Reggie’s only hit 460 more 3pters than Ray despite the fact that he played 6 seasons longer than him(percentages are roughly the same). That averages out to Ray having to hit less than 1 trey a game for the next six seasons to surpass Miller (he’s averaging 2.4 a game as of last season). It’s a wrap for Reggie, at least statistically.

Austin Burton says:
First of all, Bruce Bowen should be on this list instead of Steve Smith. I’ve already argued with this everyone in the office and the facts support it:
(1) Bowen is a 39% career three-point shooter. Smith is at 35 percent. Both players led the League in 3-point percentage once in their careers.
(2) Bowen is a proven clutch shooter. Remember the playoff game where he hit seven threes? His corner three is a vital part of the Spurs’ machine, and he knocks them down consistently.
(3) Bowen has three championships. Smith has one championship — which came when he was a backup in San Antonio and Bowen started ahead of him.
(4) If you’ve got money down on one guy hitting a three in a big game, would you go with Bowen from the corner or Smith from anywhere on the floor?

Andrew Katz says:
A-Train,
Here’s my case against your man Bruce. It never felt like Bruce was a go-to option. I don’t think that he’s one of the 16 best shooters for the last 20 years because he’s been the fourth option on this team who simply makes defenses pay for overplaying the other three guys.
The more important stat between these two is that Bruce has hit 776 three’s over the course of his career while Smith has 1148. Smith was the Hawks first or second option on that team that had Mookie, Deke and Stacey Augmon.
Plus, Smith was a dangerous shooter from all over the floor. Bowen is a niche shooter who probably has made like 60% of his three’s from the corners. I think that knocks him down a peg.
My biggest problem with our list was leaving off Joe Dumars and as some other guys have said, Hornacek. It wasn’t easy trimming the list to 16!

(3) Bowen has three championships. Smith has one championship — which came when he was a backup in San Antonio and Bowen started ahead of him.
– With all due respect, what does this have to do with this discussion? Two different teams, different circumstances, you can’t say that Bowen was a better shooter because he won. We’re talking about the best shooter, not the shooter with the most successful career.
(4) If you’ve got money down on one guy hitting a three in a big game, would you go with Bowen from the corner or Smith from anywhere on the floor?
– The fact that you even have to specify Bowen “from the corner” should be reason enough why he doesn’t make this list. The dude can’t shoot from anywhere else. To make it fair, you should say “Bowen from the corner” or “Steve Smith, at home, wearing his favorite drawers”.

In defense of MadMax, ‘the fan puncher’:
I remember that watching that game. Yeah, he punched a fan, but alot of people in that position would have hit that guy too. Vernon Maxwell’s daughter had just died, and so he said he was playing the game for her, and wrote her name on his shoes. Some ‘heckler’ then shouts “Hey ni**er! How’s your dead baby?” and Maxwell bolted into the stands and hit him.
Hakeem and Otis got this ‘oh sh!t’ look on their faces and chased after him but it was too late. By the time they got there and the guy had already been hit. Yeah, not the greatest reaction, but it’s a reaction that alot of us would understand.

@Ian, I saw Ray Ray in person all year. The man had a few clutch 3s (early season winners vs. Toronto and the play of the year vs. the Bobcats) but he also missed his fair share of late game FTs and disappeared for the first 2 and a half series of the Playoffs. I wouldn’t say he’s “not clutch,” but I wouldn’t go out of my way to call him clutch either.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Big V says:
You’re right. He hasn’t had as many chances to show his stuff in the playoffs outside of some monster performances against Philly when he was with Milwaukee and Seattle when they lost in 6 to San Antonio. But it’s not like Reggie iced EVERY playoff game for Indy either.
Again, I’m not saying that Ray > Reggie in the clutch department. I’m just pointing out that Ray can get it done when it matters as well.

When Allen was the unquestioned leader of his respective teams, he never disappeared either. You can’t underestimate the challenge that it is for a guy like that to subdue his game, and still find a way to be effective (and on a championship team at that).
We’ll have to agree to disagree for now. I’m looking forward to seeing how he does this season.

alright guys how bout this off the ball in the clutch i take reggie, but with the ball in his hands top of the key i think ray ray in his prime is right up there..reggie gets a slight nod..
but kerr is the best pure shooter ever..reggie is a scorer, that can shoot, ray ray is a pure shooter but he can’t f with price or kerr…
bottom line im not showing any tape to my hs team on reggie’s mechanics and telling them take notes…killer yes! pure shooter not so much..dude was streaky..he would get killed in this 3pt contest

A-Train,
I honestly think that Dennis Scott and Dell Curry are in a different league than Bowen. There have been points in both of their careers where their respective squads looked to them on a consistent basis to hit three’s.
I think that Kerr is probably the best comparison to Bowen, except for this one fact. Kerr is the greatest “niche” shooter ever. Like Bowen, his offensive game is completely limited to catching and shooting. Except he made 45% of his tries.
Plus it doesn’t hurt that he did it alongside Michael. Everyone likes Michael’s sidekick better than Timmy D’s sidekick.

Guys,
In regards to Kerr,
To me, Reggie and Ray..these guys are Hall of Fame great players, leaders, whatever.
But, the winner of this contest should be a shooting -three-pt shooting specialist-
If Kerr isn’t THE premiere definition of a 3-pt -specialist- then who is??
Yes, Kerr played with Jordan (he also played without and kept the stats). Yes, Kerr shot only open shots.
These things should not penalize him.
What’s most important is that anytime the ball left Kerr’s hand from 3pt range you KNEW it was money.
*also, tim legler shouldve been on the list.

I think ray ray is the better scorer than reggie all and all though, no i don’t think, i know not just for the fact that ray is at 21ppg for his career and reggie is at 18,also ray could kill u in the post,he was killer with and without the ball, and he was a capable point guard, plus reggie took way more shots to average his 18 i believe..this has nothing to do with what we’re talking about but…
anyway both these dudes are kinda streaky but the point that reggie is not necessarily a pure shooter imo, would have me shaky on taking him in a 3pt contest with a pure shooter like ray…in game situation coming off the ball though i want reggie all day…top of the key ball in hands clear out ray ray..

Austin-Big Bowen fan here (I’ll take the heat. god man do the research before posting all that bs comon allen takes 5 MORE SHOTS A GAME than reggie per game in his career 17 to 12 and only outscores him by three points so advantage reggie there
another thing reggies career is over u avged in his twilight years so lets wait and see how that avg ends up on allen
on his best scoring season it took 21 shots from allen to avg 26 points
in his best scoring season it took reggie 15 shots to avg 24 points u here that only 15 shots
one question who can allen kill in the post boykins????
in the playoffs its not even close allen stats arent all that diff from his regular season stats now reggies bunch of times over 25 ppg but really i dont know why i mention playoffs when its a no contest here
bad starting line here “i know not just for the fact that ray is at 21ppg for his career and reggie is at 18″ i think u should revise that

ray used to get plays ran for him in the post in seattle and on the bucks all the time dude..how old are u? the same way the hawks use joe johnson today was the same way they used ray was in his prime..he would either get the ball free throw line extended on a curl, get a clear out on the block(obviously if he had a smaller man on him),or they would get it in his hands at the top of the key…

Larry Bird Bracket
Reggie Miller – I’m a bulls fan and I would pick Reggie.
Chuck Person – They called him the Rifleman, meaning he’s murder.
Dale Ellis vs. Mark Price – Ellis. This is a fucked up question, Mark Price is lights out.
Glen Rice – One of the top shooter/scorers of his generation.
2nd Round
Reggie vs. Chuck – Reggie, longevity and killer instinct seperate Reggie easily.
Dale vs. Glen – Its a crap shoot but Dale gets the nod because he was a gunner and hoisted up alot more shots.
Larry Bird Final
Reggie vs Dale – Dale was clutch, Reggie relished the clutch shot, Knicks fans will never forget that.
Jerry West Bracket
Ray Allen – The purest shooter since Bird. Point blank.
Peja Stojakovic – Hope he gets rested for the playoffs.
Dell Curry – Thats all he did in the L. Shooters like him don’t know off nights.
Chris Mullin – Second best shooter in the league next to Bird back in the day.
2nd Round
Ray vs. Peja – Ray.
Dell vs. Chris – That lefty shot was pretty.
Jerry West Final
Ray vs. Chris – Remember when UConn vs. St. John’s meant something? UConn.

reggie is more like that too. on the otherhand, NONE of that applies to kerr. he could go the whole game on the bench come in with 2 minute to go and knock down big buckets like whatever. that was his job.
he has to be the greatest 3 pt shooter in the past 20 years.
I can think of noone who can consistently do the above during or after kerr’s days.

Like what doc was on. What are the rules in regards to how this is being played? When Dime did the one on one joint you guys gave rules.

Is this just like the three point contest cause then rhythm comes into play.
If this is a game of 1 on 1 and you can only shoot threes, then shooting off the dribble and defense come in.
I am just saying what are the rules, cause that might bring clarity.

Andrew Katz says:
First of all, about Chris Jackson/Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf…
he might have had one of the top 20 most ridiculous two years in college (averaged over 30 and then over 27 for LSU), but his 10 years in the League weren’t enough to beat out anybody else.
He shot under 36% from three, only had one season where he hit more than 100 three’s, and in total, only made 474 career treys.
About Nash, he has the numbers to be on this list. But is he a shooter? Nash is a real point guard who is first and foremost a passer. I think that precludes you from being here. Each one of the 16 guys on this list – their best asset was/is shooting. Nash’s best skill is passing.
Still, I’m not sure that’s a worthwhile reason to keep him off.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Big V says:
I tend to agree with Katz’ last statement. Just because a guy is better at something else doesn’t make him ineligible to be the best at one thing. But still, Nash is more of a spot up shooter, which is why I don’t think he does that well against these guys.

heartbreaker85 says:
do we even have to put this on a list? no one can shoot the 3 ball like reggie. not even larry bird!
here’s why.
try running at full speed from underneath the post, then to the 3 point wing, and back again, then to the other side, catch the ball, and just throw it up there and actually MAKE the shot.
the guy doesn’t need to have his feet set to make threes. that’s what sets him apart from ray allen, bird, stojakovic et. al.
look at the 2 pt jumpshooters when they try to run around and just throw it up there without getting their balance straight- it’s just ugly.

why is kerr even in the conversation? the only reason that he was able to hit all those 3’s is because he had people like jordan, pippen, and duncan drawing all the attention and spoon feeding him

Ace One says:
If you’re going to do a contest for the best shooter, I think of the rules as similar as to how they do best marksman in the Olympics.
The guy the U.S. sends out it isn’t necessarily the clutch sniper who gets the bad guys when bombs are going off all over the place.
They send the guy who taught that guy how to shoot! The country kid who used to shoot tin cans on his barn for 5hrs a day. He doesn’t fight in the wars.. he may not be the most athletic but he can shoot his ass off! Under “default” conditions he can hit the center of a bullseye no questions asked.
All of these guys, Reggie.. Ray Allen.. they’re good but similar to the soldiers aforementioned earlier.. they run around and can hit under duress and all that.
However, when you’re crowning the best shooter.. none of that matters. You send the guys who hit the bullseye just straight out. Clutchness doesnt matter as much. Whether he’s a spot up jump shooter does NOT matter.
You choose the guy with the all-time highest 3-pt percentage in NBA History… and you don’t make him a #8 seed.
