We’re almost there. Whether you’ve been waiting four years (since Athens) or just a couple of months (since the Celtics hoisted the trophy), it seems like it’s taking forever for the 2008 Olympics to arrive. Opening ceremonies finally get underway Friday morning, and the men’s basketball tournament tips off Sunday, with Team USA taking on China in their opener. And what better way to come across as the Big Bad Americans by serving the host country a 40-piece on Day One? … The NBA will be well-represented at the opening ceremonies: Dirk (who just got the Olympic rings cut into his head) is carrying the German flag, Andrei Kirilenko will lead Russian delegation with the flag, Manu is doing the honors for Argentina, and of course Yao will bear the flag for China. Plus NBA alum Sarunas Jasikevicius will also be toting Lithuania’s flag to lead his country’s delegation. In case you’re wondering, 1500-meter runner Lopez Lomong will be Team USA’s flag-bearer … Who would come away with the gold if there was an NBA-only Olympic Games? We asked the readers who would win in boxing, track & field, weightlifting and a few other events: Ron Artest, Nate Robinson and Shaq were popular picks in the ring, while Monta Ellis and Rip Hamilton got a lot of votes on the track. What about an NBA decathlon? We’re liking Shawn Marion, Kobe or LeBron in that one … For the rest of the NBA not involved in Beijing, the ‘08-09 schedule was released yesterday. Opening Night features three games: Celtics/Cavs (ring ceremony) and Lakers/Blazers (Greg Oden’s debut) on national TV, along with Bulls/Bucks (Derrick Rose’s debut and, not that anyone really cares, Scott Skiles going against his old team) on the undercard … Christmas Day, essentially the beginning of the NBA season for the mainstream very-casual fan, has five games on the slate: Magic/Hornets, Spurs/Suns, Cavs/Wizards, Blazers/Mavs, and the main event, Celtics/Lakers. Check out the some other schedule highlights HERE, i.e. the first Chris Paul/Deron Williams head-to-head, Baron Davis‘ return to the Bay, and the unveiling of Houston’s new Big Three … Rebuilding or not, Vince Carter wants to stick around and lead the Nets. “I’m going to make the best of it. This is my opportunity to step up and be a leader on and off the court,” Vince told the Bergen Record. “It’s something I’m definitely looking forward to and something Devin (Harris) is looking forward to — to get an opportunity to show what he can do, not only as a basketball player but as a leader.” Could these Nets steal a playoff spot in the East? … The latest numbers on a Sixers deal for Andre Iguodala are rumored to be five years at $70 million. Too much for Iguodala, or a bargain for Philly? … According to some Chicago papers, the Bulls have found some teams interested in trading for Larry Hughes. Really? With that contract? Hughes is on the books for more than $26 million for the next two years, but he did play in 68 games this season, which is like Ironman status by his standards. This 100 percent sounds like something involving the Knicks, though … Has Elgin Baylor been asleep all these years or something and he just woke up? The Clippers can’t stop making moves this summer, yesterday picking up Steve Novak from the Rockets for a 2011 second-rounder. Either Novak plays Redick-level awful defense or Rick Adelman just doesn’t like him, ’cause he never got the kind of PT in Houston fit for someone who T-Mac once called the best shooter he’d ever seen. Although Marcus Camby or Chris Kaman is gonna be the starting four in L.A., there isn’t a “true” PF on the roster, so maybe there’s a better opportunity for Novak … The Bobcats signed Shannon Brown, continuing their tradition of bringing in players who won big in college. Every NBA locker room is full of guys talking smack about their colleges, but no one can mess with the ‘Cats. They’ve got six dudes who won national ‘chips (Okafor, Felton, J-Rich, Sean May, Derek Anderson and Nazr Mohammed), another who made it to the national title game (Ryan Hollins), and another who got to the Final Four (Brown). Then there’s national P.O.Y. Adam Morrison and ACC P.O.Y. Jared Dudley, both of whom carried their teams to some impressive records. One of these days, all of that should lead to some NBA success … Speaking of national championships, Kansas just inked Bill Self to a 10-year, $30 million deal. And you wonder why some college coaches can’t resist breaking the rules, don’t mind dealing with one-and-dones, and basically live in their offices … Nothing to do with basketball, but we have to say we’re glad something finally happened with Brett Favre. Some of us in the Dime office had been boycotting all sports programming since it had become unbearable to watch. The trade hopefully means we’re done with “BREAKING NEWS” reports that Favre put on blue socks this morning, so maybe he’s leaning toward playing for the Panthers. Of course being in NYC, it’s gonna be a zoo here the first day Favre arrives and for his first game with the Jets … We’re out like Larry Hughes …

Now we’ll get updates on Favre’s 1st practice, his 1st interception in practice, his 1st td in practice, his 1st preseason game, and any other thing he does. ESPN should just run a separate show for him and get it all out of the way in a half hour or hour so I don’t have to watch him all dayyy.

Gilbert Arenas on Kwame Brown:
“I like that deal for Detroit and for Kwame. He’s in a quieter city now, he’s 26-years old, he’s on a veteran team, he’s growing up. In the past in D.C. and L.A. it was a case of him being a big kid in a big city, now he can settle his career down. You know that Sheed and McDyess and those other bigs will help him develop and this should be the best time of his career because in Detroit, the bigs get touches in the offense.
Don’t think that the Kwame Brown that was in Memphis is the real Kwame Brown. When you get traded, so much emotion goes into it and leaving a No. 1 team to come into a team with a bad record halfway through the season is a tough adjustment.” -Freep.com

The Rockets may regret letting go of Novak. Too good of a shooter to just get a #2 for (and I’m kinda upset the Celtics didn’t make a play for him. Why not have an extra shooter on the bench? I’m a big fan of his game. I’d play him some spot minutes at the 3 (think Jason Kapono before Toronto lost their mind and gave him way too much $$$) as long a sthere are other good defenders out there with him to make up for his obvious short-comings. nice get for the Clippers.
and yes, thank God something happened w/ Brett Favre. Too bad he’s in NYC now, so we’ll get barraged w/ the “Country boy goes to the big city for 1 more shot” stories and every possible thing that happens in practice and him getting settled in. 32 more days til the season starts and we can start hearing about, you know, actual football.
Why wouldn’t the Knicks want Larry Hughes? Big contract (they’d obviously have to give up some of theirs, but Jarred Jeffries could be an okay backup at the 3 - he can defend real well - on a team that needs some defense at that position) and that deal expires right when LeBron, Wade, Bosh, etc. hit the market. The real question is, how many #1s would NY need to throw in to get the Bulls to take the bag of crap (+David Lee you’d think) they’d be offering?

Forget if Favre goes down, I wanna see the reaction of fans in Green Bay if Rodgers (God forbid) ever goes down. I bet you people will be calling for Ted Thompson’s (Pack GM) head to roll if that happens. I don’t get it though. You take a team to the NFC Championship game, win 13 out of 16 games, have a Pro-Bowl season, and then you retire and want to come back. Any team would have let Favre do that, especially after what he has done for Green Bay, the team and city, and hell even the state of Wisconsin. He didn’t even file his retirement papers for a while so it seems like he was pushed out by Packers’ management. Now he decides I want to play and all the Packers’ brass sippin cool-aid up there think that Aaron Rodgers puts them in a better situation than Brett? Some whack ish man. That’s like MJ coming back after winning his last 3 rings in Chicago and then the Bulls management being like “we’re gonna go with __________ instead MJ, but you can compete for the starting position…”
August 7th, 2008 at 9:34 am
Celts Fan says:
@GEE, MJ got as much coverage for a minute, but he and the Bulls had some class about it and made 1 announcement (just a 2 word press release, “I’m Back,” not ever a press conference, just a press release, a uni, and a game to play, and he was playing right away) and it was done. This Favre thing has dragged on so long you don’t give a crap what happens, you just want it over.
I can see where the Pack is coming from too. Brett left they went through an entire off-season developing a chemistry w/ Aaron Rogers (a 1st round pick who’s made over $30M already w/out a single start and is gonna be a FA after the ‘09 season, so you eventually have to figure out what you have, so you KNOW the $$$ had a part in it, if there was the NBA rookie scale, it may be different) and then Brett decides he does want to play. If you don’t want him, fine. If they’d just cut him or traded him from day 1 - we all knew after he wasn’t welcomed back right away, the he’d be playing somewhere else - he woulda signed w/ the Vikings or Bears and it woulda been done. They wanted the best of both worlds (telling him he couldn’t play there but still trying to determine where he’d go and wouldn’t even think about a trade til now!? terrible way to treat a legend,) tried paying him off to stay retired!, and just dragged it on longer than it needed to be. MUCH LONGER than it needed to be.
I’m sick of talking aobut this guy. That’s it from me on this damn situation. back to ball…

Ultimate revenge if you will would be for Aaron to not be all that they thought he was lol and for Brett to take the Jets further than the Packers and what everyone expects.
With the way they treated dude I can’t say I don’t want that to happen. Nothing against Rogers cause he really must be the shiznit for them to push Brett to the side. Still dude served his time and should have been treated way better.

@Weezy, Problem is they’ve wasted so much time telling us there’s a story where there isn’t, that now that there is one (him getting traded,) we just don’t give a crap anymore.
@Mox, it’s not terrible, it’s a GREAT model (as long as that’s not all you do,) you just need to grab the right players. Most contending college teams are that way because there’s some NBA talent on it, you just need to find it and determine what’s legit talent and what’s a product of/much better fit in a college system.
Let’s look at this past All Star team:
Jason Kidd - His Cal team wasn’t great, but they made some noise
Dwyane Wade - Final Four
Ray Allen - his UConn team gave Duke all they could handle, but he basically put the team on the map those few years he was there. They weren’t ready quite yet…
Chauncey Billups - not so much
Chris Bosh - GT was nice, they went to the Nat’l Title Game the next year. Had he stayed, they probably win it.
Caron Butler - that UConn team was solid
Richard Hamilton - best player on a title team (that game was one of hte best I’ve ever seen btw.)
Antawn Jamison - Final Four
Joe Johnson - not so much
Paul Pierce - Kansas was the favorite and #1 seed before losing to the eventual champion Arizona
Rasheed Wallace - won a title as arguably the best player on the team (Stackhouse)
Allen Iverson - that GTown team was damn good, but nothing w/out him
Carmelo Anthony - title
Tim Duncan - surprisingly his Wake team underachieved in college
Carlos Boozer - title
Steve Nash - his Santa Clara team pulled off a HUGE upset in the tourny, which is as close to a chip as they were ever gonna get.
Chris Paul - did as well as they could’ve. went to the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 I believe
Brandon Roy - that Washington team put up a hell of a fight against a flawed #1 seed (same UConn team that lost to George Mason)
David West - went to Xavier, only so much you can do…

MoxWestCoastRep says:
@Celts
I hear what your saying, but wheather or not your team was good in college doesnt translate to the pros.
I noticed you left out all of the HS to pro players- LBJ, KG, Kobe, Tracy etc… best players in the league.
I’m just saying the Bobcats passed on A LOT of good players over the years namely Devin Harris, Andrew Bynum, Roy and Al Thornton for guys like Felton, Morrison and Okafor because they were “winners” in college.
August 7th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Celts Fan says:
Don’t disagree w/ any of that Mox, the Bobcats are a perfect example of a team that ONLY wants to draft like that, which I said is dumb. How good your team was in college does translate though if your game does (that’s the VITAL part, is that your game translates. Doesn’t matter how good your team was if you’re a 5′8″ 2 guard w/ no handles. If you’re a 6′3″ point though, that’s different.) Good players make their teams good. Obviously you can’t apply that to an A10 team or something, but big conference teams with NBA prospects should be good. Look at Derrick Rose, his team should’ve won the chip. I’m not saying it should be the only way teams look at a guy, cuz that’s insanely dumb, but an elite college team usually has a high quality/all-star level NBA player on its roster, the trick is just making sure you figure out the right one (Deron instead of Dee Brown/James Augustine, Rose over CDR, Rasheed and Stack instead of Eric Montross, MJ and Worthy instead of that guy that went on to coach UNC and Notre Dame, Foye and Kyle Lowry over Allan Ray.) The point is, if you prove yourself on the biggest stage in college, chances are you won’t shy away from the big stage at the next level. If you make your team better in college, you could do the same in the pros. There are obvious examples of guys/teams that don’t fit that system, but there are exceptions to every rule, as long as this isn’t the only way to evaluate guys and just one of MANY factors, it’s a good thing to throw in.
(and I left out the HS/International guys because if you didn’t go to college, it’s kinda tough to rate your NBA success compared to your college success. Just remember, for every Kobe, there are 10 Leon Smiths.)
