Andre Iguodala gets $80 Million, Team USA gets another W, and Houston has another problem
A.I.2 Photo. Kelly TursoIt’s actually frustrating to see how much better the Sixers are being run in the post-Allen Iverson era than while they had A.I. in his prime and perfectly able to lead them to a title. Yesterday Philly stepped up and secured the second big piece of their new foundation, agreeing to a six-year, $80 million deal with Andre Iguodala. Where was this kind of front-office competency and efficiency two or three years ago? The Sixers needed a scoring big man this summer, so they went out and got Elton Brand. They needed athletes during A.I.’s tenure, and since then they’ve drafted guys like Thaddeus Young, Jason Smith and Marreese Speights. And now they needed a legit #2 scorer and perimeter defender — not to mention a second-tier star who doesn’t feel second-tier — and they got it by re-upping with Iguodala for a ton of money. Too much money? Iguodala should be getting paid more than Emeka Okafor and Luol Deng, but $75 million wouldn’t have been a bad number … Previewing Team USA vs. Angola in yesterday morning’s Smack, we mentioned a few things the Americans needed to work on, not just for the Angola game but moving forward in the tournament: getting Carmelo off to a good start, and seeing that Dwight Howard established himself as a presence inside. Mission accomplished. ‘Melo (12 pts, 6 rebs) converted a three-point play and got a breakaway dunk within the first few possessions, and Dwight (14 pts, 6-for-6 FG’s) had stretches where he looked like Moses Malone on Creatine. Did you see the play where Jason Kidd fed The Centaur with an entry pass after one of Angola’s defenders had fallen under Dwight’s feet? What do you think was going through that guy’s mind when Dwight caught the ball and turned to the basket? … One thing we also said needed to be addressed that didn’t go so well? Kobe’s outside shooting. He was 4-for-13 from the floor yesterday, 0-for-8 from three, and all of those makes may have come on breakaways and layups. Some of the Kobe loyalists are blaming his shooting woes on the shorter international three-point line (that’s a new one), but since he’s taking a lot of his treys from 4-5 feet behind that line anyway, we don’t see how that’s a factor … Team USA won an unusually close game, 97-76, against an Angolan team that was clearly overmatched but never stopped hustling and didn’t give up despite their coach’s words. Did you see where he not only told the media but admitted he told his own team that their goal was to lose by less than 40? This ain’t 1992 anymore, dude. It’s OK to not be in awe … Red flags: Team USA shot 5-for-21 beyond the arc, and were out-rebounded (38-34) by a team whose center is about 6-8 and PF is about 6-5 … Funny moment when Angola’s Felizardo Ambrosio stuffed Deron Williams at the rim and started bumping his gums at Deron, then on the very next play graciously stepped out of the way when Dwight came barreling in for a dunk. A few minutes later Ambrosio got his shot sent to South Guangdong by LeBron (12 pts) and was never heard from again … D-Wade again led the U.S. with 19 points. His hair is growing back, too. If you didn’t hear, Wade wasn’t planning on doing the MJ thing and going bald for long; he was just worried about having to get a haircut in China, so he had his guy shave him before he left. That way he won’t wind up looking like Rasheed Wallace by the time the gold medal game rolls around … Doug Collins’ suggestion that Dwight develop a Tim Duncan-esque bank shot from the angle was well-intentioned — and Dwight would be unstoppable if he had that in his repertoire — but how many big men over the last decade have wanted to do the same thing and been unable to? It’s not that easy … When Collins joked that Angola was “my kind of team” after Mike Breen mentioned that more than 60 percent of their shots were taken beyond the arc, do you think the Chicago Bulls front office shared a little sigh of relief? … We’re loving how NBC brought back the “NBA on NBC” John Tesh track … Which was better: LeBron’s tomahawk alley-oop he caught on Yi Jianlian’s neck the other day, or the right-to-left switching hands dunk he pulled off against Angola? … Speaking of Yi, he continues to make the Bucks look dumb for drafting him (especially considering he didn’t want to go there and they could’ve taken Al Thornton, Rodney Stuckey, Brandan Wright or Thad Young instead) and the Nets look dumber for trading a borderline All-Star for him. Yi was a non-factor in China’s heartbreaking loss to Spain, fading into the background while teammates Liu Wei, Zu Fangyu and even Wang ZhiZhi carried the offensive load alongside Yao. Defensively Yi was a liability — him being unable to guard Pau Gasol forced China’s coach to stick with Yao on Gasol despite Yao’s foul trouble, and Gasol proceeded to foul him out. China led by 14 going into the fourth quarter, but completely fell apart and eventually lost by 10 in overtime … Continuing our trek into the Dime archives for a better look at Team USA, we revisited Carlos Boozer’s August ‘07 feature in Issue #35. Coming off Utah’s Western Conference Finals loss to the Spurs, Booz talked about bouncing back that summer and addressed the Cavaliers controversy … And looking ahead, the new issue of Dime (#43) hits stores this week. Kobe graces the cover of our Olympic Issue. Preview it HERE and pick one up next time you’re out … In Tuesday’s other hoop games, Argentina beat Australia behind Manu Ginobili’s 21 points and seven dimes, Lithuania beat Iran, Croatia beat Russia, and Greece beat Germany … We caught a feature on Michael Phelps where they were talking about his 10,000-calories-a-day diet, going to all his favorite restaurants in his town and having them break down Phelps’ usual order. Interesting stuff. Can we request a similar feature on Baby Shaq? … Rafer Alston is in the news for the wrong reasons again. Arrested last week for DUI, Skip’s court date is set for Thursday, where he’ll face misdemeanor charges. If the “incidents” keep piling up, how long before the Rockets start looking to turn Skip’s job over to Aaron Brooks? … And since it looks like ‘08 draft pick Goran Dragic is staying in Europe this year, the Suns need to get a backup PG. Should they take a chance on Shaun Livingston, or an older guy like Damon Stoudamire? What about someone like Chris Quinn (safe but not that talented) or Smush Parker (talented but a wild card)? They could give D.J. Strawberry some more minutes at the one — just do anything to make sure Steve Nash isn’t runing out of gas come April … We’re out like Ambrosio …

@Fed & Josh, Smooth got kinda screwed, but $11.6M per is still a good amount for a guy who’s kinda a tweener (do you want him at the 4 in a fast-paced system or the 3 in a slower one?) that can’t shoot at all. He’ll still be in his early prime when this deal’s done and can get paid more then. Iggy can do a little of everything and isn’t that far behind Josh on the defensive end. (remember too, Iggy’s deal is for 6 years, Josh’s only 5, so it’s $11.6M per for Josh vs. $13.33M per for Iggy. Not a huge difference.)

i been saying all summer (and last yr at the deadline) they need to get rid of rafer and get a real point guard, the artest deal is nice and all (tallent wise) but do they really need 8 guys between 6′6 and 6′10? i mean brooks is going to have to fight “the franchise” for all of about 15 games for a back up role to alston, then stevie is going down again! alston will continue to jack up stupid shots and try to go all “getto” on other teams right along with artest.
houston will make the playoffs and good news for tracy they will get past the 2nd round but no farther!

David Lopez says:
First Dime says that the Angola belived that they could beat the USA. If there goal was to lost by less than 40 then theres no way that they belived they could beat the US. And now Dime is saying that the US won a close game. Since when was beating a team by 21 close? The US was up by 30 at the end of 3 quarters. Up by 30 with 3:35 left in the game and up by 28 with 1:58 left in the game. The US was blowing out Angola until there was 1:58 left the game. Then Angola outscored the US 9-2 for the rest of the game which is why the US only won by 21.

@David Lopez — Angola’s coach said his goal was to lose by less than 40. Angola’s players didn’t play that way. 21 points was closer than a lot of people predicted. Hence, surprisingly close.

Sign it and make sure you’re set for life (god help him if he blows out a knee or something over the summer working out before signing) and go for the max next time around, when he’s only like 27. He’s still in a great position to end up making $150-$200 mil by the time he retires. While he’s gonna make $1.7M per less than Iggy, he just became rich beyond his wildest dreams. I’m sure he’s still ecstatic, even if there is a bit of regret for not waiting a few days to leverage Iguodala’s deal for more $$$.

@DIME - you know, it does feel a little odd that the Sixers seem so bent on success these days when a couple of years ago you would never see them break off another player like Iggy. Not that they didn’t want too, but maybe because AI was the MAN and didn’t allow another guy in his spotlight. And I don’t mean that as a slight on AI. He was the Sixers like Favre was the Packers. It’s hard to have 2 guys in that spot.

Come on Nash, Bogut’s actually pretty good (just operating in the HUGE shadow cast by the 3 and 4 picks of that draft.) He’s probably more like Jon Koncak.
@Youngfed, I’m sure Atlanta’s steadfast assertion that they’re matching any offer for Josh didn’t help. The only way a team probably figured they’d get him was to throw too much $$$ at him (Josh is nice, I expected $13-$14M, but he’s not a max guy yet, gotta work on that J. If the “attitude” is gone, it can’t hurt - and going from 22 to 27 will do wonders for that, I think it’s a non-issue, but some teams may not.)

Why didn’t the Sixers say they would match any offer for Iggy? That would have brought down his value (cuz teams wouldn’t go after him, knowing they’d lose him) and then they wouldn’t over pay. Dude is nasty but he’s a second fiddle kinda guy and shouldn’t have gotten that much money.
Smush Parker and “talented” were just used in the same sentence. In related news hell is a chill -3.
Kobe may hurt team USA more than he helps. I agree with “steve nash”… where is Redd?
August 13th, 2008 at 9:48 am
Celts Fan says:
@Nash, I meant dude you were clowning on was probably like Jon Koncak. Bogut’s better than that…
@Youngfed, Josh Smith can’t shoot. His percentage may be relatively high since he mostly dunks, but if you honestly trust his 15-20 footer, I think you’re giving him too much faith. He’s similar to Rajon Rondo in that they both came in with a J so broke, that the work they’ve done to improve it to “below average” makes it seem like they can shoot, but there’s still a lot of work to do for both in that area.
A few things I disagree w/ on your comparisons. here’s how I’d compare them:
Deron/Chauncey
CP3/Zeke (when the only people he harassed were opposing PGs)
Iggy/Pippen
JSmooth/Marion/AK47
Bird and Dirk is way off to me too. Bird played the 3 and was more fluid and a better rebounder than Dirk. He was also a pretty solid TEAM defender (awful on-ball, but good in the team concept, remember, Bird played the 3 but guarded opposing 4s.) Both of their games are so unique, I don’t think there’s ever been a guy comparable to either, that’s what makes/made them so good and such a complete nightmare for opposing players and coaches.
Stuckey/Dumars is pretty dead-on though. No wonder you guys love him so much (besides the obvious fact that he’s damn good.) A new-age Joe D…

Celts, no way he sees that much money. Remember, because of their salary, they get taxed at a much higher bracket than us “normies”(Family Guy, what up!).
So in actuality, he might gross 11.6M this year, but I’m guessing he nets somewhere between 7-8M.

@Dennis, it’s probably closer to only like 55% (so like $6.5 per) of what the contract says, but it’s the same way for guys making the max too. And if you’re taking home $32.5M over 5 years, you’re still set for life if you don’t have a Bentley fetish (or a drug problem.) that’s completely ignoring the huge deal he’s likely to get in 5 years afterwards.

Dirk has that post fadeaway, Larry let McHale and the Chief put in work on the block and only ventured in for a layup or runner.
The only similarities they have are that they’re 2 of the best shooters the game’s ever seen. Beyond that, I just don’t see it.

Throughout the season he won his match-ups, improved his mid-range J, was one of the best play making wins on a team that didn’t have scorers, and didn’t sit out two weeks for a twisted ankle or jammed finger…
Yeah $72-75 would seem to make more sense, but this is a guy that WORKS. I feel a lot better about this type of investment than giving a timid Rashard Lewis $118 mil…
I don’t understand…
Is 20ppg, 5+rpg, 5+apg 2+spg, durability, and defensive accountability worth $13mil a year on a playoff team? HELL YEA…

All time best 4s (since Doc brought it up.)
1. Timmy (this is not arguable.)
2. Malone (dude was a HUGE choke artist, but #3 didn’t exactly run ish in the clutch, so, on the strength of his #s, I’ll give him the slight edge now.)
3. KG (he’s top 40 all time in 5 categories - points, boards, dimes, blocks, and steals - which is insane to me. By the time he retires, he almost definitely jumps up to #2 on my list based on that, but right now, slight edge to everyone’s favorite pedophile. I always thought 13′d getcha 20.)

I could see that AB, I’d've had Charles #4 personally, but couldn’t think of a #5 that I felt strongly about being #5 (maybe McHale, felt like I was forgetting someone though,) so I just kept it top 3. After Duncan, you could mix and match the next 3 and not be wrong one way or another IMO…

1.Duncan 2.KG the kid-He earned it this year.Barkley and Malone was good on O but they would not have shut down Kobe and Bron.3.Malone on the strength that every fucking game I sat and watched between him and Barkley he would just destroy Chuck.4.Chuck just because he earned it.5.I give it to Mcale or however the fuck you spell his name.

@ doc… pistol pete maravich doesn’t make the cut? Dude could score in bunches and had a sick handle. A few others who I think push for top 5…
-steve nash… yeah, two mvps and made the PG spot so important in the new millenium.
-mark price… money on those early 90s cleveland teams and made free throws look as easy as breathing.
-Bill walton… i refuse to say anything good about him due to the fact that for a few years I had to watch nba games on mute when he was announcing.
-detlef schrempf… not top 5 but honorable mention. One of the first euro players you did not fu*k with.

@schoops-Yeah I forgot about the Pistol my bad.But I would have to see more of his shit because Mullin was tough.Pistol was the shit but his teams always stunk so I dont know if he had horrible teams or he was on some White Choclate shit-just good for highlights. In college I know he averaged 40 something but then I would be throwing dudes in there like Laettner because in college he was a big Larry Bird.

GEE...Burn baby burn like Lisa Lopez...poor Rison. says:
Sigh… I so wish Houston would have gotten a better pg. I like Alston and all but I just feel there are much better floor generals out there that can do what he does and create their own shot and be consistent.
LOL we always doing top 5 what about a most horrible 5 lol. Who were the worst players to ever get any tick lol. That would be some funny ish.
Baddest white boys has to include Kevin Mc. don’t it?

What is this!? says:
Man I agree with Dime 100%. I also find it very odd that the Sixers are trying to make all these moves now all of a sudden once Iverson left. The Owner Ed Snider and Iverson did not get along, he sat back and watched Billy King make all those crazy trades and moves and then waited for Iverson to demand a trade (because the backlash would have been much stronger by the fans if the Sixers would have traded him without his permission), he outed AI on national television to decrease his value and then waited for Iverson to leave to fire Billy King. He used Billy King as a scapegoat to get Iverson out of there. Thats what I think. Man Iverson was bamboozled!!
@ Logan,
The Sixers made a trade for Chris Webber who at that time was making more money then Iverson, which was a mistake because it really tied the Sixers hands. It wasn’t about Iverson not wanting to share the spotlight, its HIS town, its HIS team. So therefor, he was the star. Its no different then the Lakers paying another player big money that plays next to Kobe…its still Kobes team and Kobe is still the #1 star, noone is going to come on his team and take the spotlight from him, especially a player thats not better then him. Iggy is a number #2 option at best, nothing more..nothing less. The guy does not have it in him to be “the man” which is why the SIxers went out and got Elton Brand in hopes that they could share that spot. Wether or not he is overpaid is very debatable…but I am not going to knock Iggys hustle. And considering that Iverson had love for Iggy, who’s to say that Iggy still wouldn’t get his pay day on playing next to Iverson? I don’t know, the Sixers organization is just starting to look real suspect with that Iverson situation.
