The NBA reps at the Democratic National Convention, and why you want your kid to play for Coach K

Carmelo AnthonyCarmelo (photo. Mannion)

Charles Barkley was at the Democratic National Convention in Denver yesterday, but he’s pretty mainstream-famous with the older crowd; imagine the scene at the front door if Carmelo, Allen Iverson and J.R. Smith rolled up together and tried to get past security. Anyway, Barkley was interviewed and was pretty interesting (as usual). He said he’s an Independent (wasn’t he a card-carrying Republican a couple years back?) and supports Barack Obama, who is a friend of his and a “wonderful man.” Barkley said he is very seriously thinking about running for governor of Alabama some day, went down a big list of problems he sees in his home state, and added that at least he couldn’t screw things up more than they already are screwed … Wonder if possibly future Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson is among the crowd at the DNC … Opinion on Baron Davis is all over the place in the Dime office. A lot of people absolutely love Boom Dizzle’s game, while others think he’s got the world fooled. Now Baron says he wants to be down with the U.S. national squad. Is Baron a good fit for Team USA? He’ll be 31 when the World Championships rolls around in 2010, and 33 when the Olympics goes to London … Stemming from one of the countless ongoing Dime office arguments — not to mention needing something to pass the time until NBA training camp — yesterday we started our tournament to determine the best three-point shooter of the last 20 years. From Reggie Miller to Ray Allen to Mark Price to Mitch Richmond, we pitted the best of the best against each other. Check it out HERE and cast your vote … Carlos Jimenez announced his retirement from the Spanish national team. You may know Jimenez as the bald dude who stuck some big threes against Team USA in the Olympic gold medal game. The 32-year-old is the winningest player in Spain’s FIBA history, having picked up six medals in major competitions. He also plays for a pro team in Spain whose roster includes Jiri Welsch, Marcus Haislip, the famous Boniface N’Dong, and the infamous Omar Cook … Even the Duke-haters have to love this: We recently heard this story from one of our boys who knows a guy who was a team manager at Duke, alhough we can’t confirm whether it’s 100% true. Apparently at Cameron Indoor one game during a timeout, Coach K literally took his balls out and showed them to the team while yelling “YOU SEE THESE!! DO YOU GUYS HAVE THESE?!?! NOW GO STRAP ON A SET AND GET OUT THERE AND WIN THIS F***ING GAME!!” … The other day we were wondering aloud who will be the next man to coach Team USA (assuming Coach K doesn’t take his Sam Cassell act to London in 2012). Is it Gregg Popovich? Mike D’Antoni? Doc Rivers? Don’t count on Larry Brown getting a call; and don’t count on Jerry Sloan making a pitch for the job. The Salt Lake Tribune rehashed a story from 2000, when Sloan was expected to be the coach of Team USA at the Sydney Games, but for some unknown reason (allegedly politics) he was passed over for Rudy T. Sloan hasn’t been cool with USA Basketball ever since …

Kevin DuckworthKevin Duckworth (1964-2008)

As you’ve likely heard, former NBA All-Star Kevin Duckworth passed away Tuesday at age 44. The Blazers PR department provided this photo of Duck, who did community outreach work for the team, that was taken the day before he passed. A solid player and overall nice guy on those Drexler/Terry Porter/Jerome Kersey squads who battled MJ’s Bulls, Magic’s Lakers and Isiah’s Pistons in some memorable games, Duck also played for the Spurs, Bullets, Bucks and Clippers during an 11-year career in the League. He made two All-Star Games and won the Most Improved Player award in ‘88. He will definitely be missed …

Sad about Duck.been a minute but i’m back. I’m glad for the olympics, because the NBA finals left a bad taste in my mouth. And rudy fernandez got some monster ballz.Kobe is fluckin’ clutch and DWade has to be that guy. The Spanich squad couldn’t get a grip on him to save their lives. And I’ll say it too , I don’t want kidd on the next team. Need proof-watch the first half of the finals. A watered down bud light homes..watered down.Shyt just aint the same. And i don’t care what LeGold thinks about that point.

  2. iceman anaba says:

wow! coach K has definately got some blue devil cojones! next thing you know J. Amaechi is offering to tell kobe how his (kobe) ass tastes..

  3. ya boy says:

First too?! y’all cats slippin’.”Came back with the 45, not playing games with you !!”boom dizzle can’t survive in any other system other than the warriors. watch this season fellas.clipper nation is finna get shocked. And if AI, melo n smith walked into the DNC McCain would find a way to spin that in a negative way .i just know it.

This just in-Obama training gold medal wearing tattered up cats to run the treasury department.

  4. Alf (from Melmak) says:

sloan should be given very serious consideration as the next coach of the team usa.

the man’s got too much credentials to be bypassed again. most importantly, sloan coaches and teaches to the players the right way to play the game and makes the most of the talents given to him.

it is really very stupid that he has yet to win a coy award.

  5. Luigi says:

nice nice…i think the HC of Team USA should be either Byron Scott or one of the Jims in TEAM USAs Assistant Coaches. idk but there could be other candidates in 2-3 years. but Scott has proven himself. and he turned around NJ n NO. [with the help of Paul n Kidd..]

n my mom forced me to watch the DNC. n saw Michelle Obamas Speech..n i thought it was inspiringly amazing. n he needs 2 be prez. [even hilary says so] n McCain..i feel is a new bush. never really liked him but hey anything can happen. I didnt see Sir Charles in the stands..but i wasnt relle paying attension. i cant imagine him running Bama. i mean if he can run Bama like he run Cats on the court during his days in PHO n Philly. then maybe he can run for president!. imagine that lmao

  6. solomon says:

LOL @ coach K’s balls… that outta send the team throwing up all over the court…

all respect to the duck… a gentle giant to the truest sense on the word…

    we’re out like decency… and senses… damn it…

  7. focalmatic says:

If you consider B. Diddy’s age and durability - I seriously doubt he would be the best fit come 2012. Depending on how D. Rose develops over the next 2-3 years, I think he is a good fit that brings some of the same attributes that Baron brings to the table. He’s got the physicality and monster first step that Baron has plus he hasn’t hit his prime yet. But this could all be a moot point anyway cause Deron Williams has most of those bases covered already.

  8. daquest?on says:

damn that thing that coach k did is just disturbing, that would give me psychological problems man, everytime im losing at halftime id think of those and play worse.

  9. YOUNGFED says:

Damn thats kinda gay what Coach K did. Wrinkled old Balls isn’t motivating unless you’re Homo.

BTW no word on how Duck died, hope it wasn’t that virus.

HUSTLER NEWS: FBI INVESTIGATES DETROIT GAURD

The FBI is investigating whether Pistons guard Lindsey Hunter and business associates duped a $35,000-a-year boiler operator for Pontiac Public Schools into buying a $1.25-million house in Bloomfield Hills that he couldn’t afford, the man’s lawyer said Monday. Attorney Michael J. Smith of Sterling Heights said his client, Bruce McClellan of Waterford Township, recently told the FBI that Hunter and Iron Johnson, Hunter’s partner in L&I Enterprises, promised to pay him $300,000 in 2007 to buy the house in the 1700 block of Morningside Way. The deal called for McClellan to hold the house for one or two months until it could be purchased by someone else. But the purchaser never materialized, McClellan never got his $300,000, his excellent credit rating is ruined and the house went into foreclosure, McClellan told the FBI. Smith told the Free Press he’s contemplating suing Hunter and others to recover damages for McClellan, who is on the hook for the $1.25 million mortgage. It’s unclear what Hunter had to gain from the deal. - SI.com

CRAZY NEWS: 4 PEOPLE ARRESTED FOR TRYING TO KILL OBAMA

“Four people were arrested in Denver on Sunday (August 23) for plotting to kill presidential candidate Barack Obama during his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention this week.

According to CBS4 Denver, the four people were arrested during a traffic stop on Sunday and were found with scoped rifles, handguns, camouflage clothing, a bulletproof vest, fake IDs and methamphetamine.

One of the suspects told investigators that they planned to shoot Obama “from a high vantage point using a rifle sighted at 750 yards” during his speech at Invesco Field at Mile High on Thursday (August 28).
Sources also told CBS4 that one of the suspects wore a swastika ring.
The Secret Service, FBI and other federal agencies are still doing further investigation and will hold a press conference on the incident today (August 26)” SIXSHOT.com

Hummm??? I wonder what color they were? SMDH(x)2. He ain’t even president people trying to kill him. DAMN!!!

  12. Ashlov says:

Looks like Duck did alot of charity work at Golden Corral, too.

  13. shake&bake says:

I doubt that Coach K story is true, it’s just not very realistic. He’s smarter than that.
I don’t think Baron Davis is just a system player since he was an all-star before he went to GS. I can see him turning into a Chauncey type of player as he keeps getting older.
@ Youngfed: Since I am white, let’s not classify those guys as white, let’s classify them as redneck, meth heads who wear swastika rings.

  14. sirak says:

    RIP Kevin Duckworth.

  15. Coop says:

    @ Shake,

you mean like Bills but without the defence or chances at a ring? ;)

  16. Dagomar says:

The coach K story ruined my breakfast. Thanks Dime.

  17. the_don_mega says:

    RIP Mr Duckworth…

  18. shake&bake says:

@ Coop: exactly, haha. I was talking more about his offensive game.

  19. me says:

Sloan would be a bad idea. haven’t you heard he has a way of coaching that would flat out piss off any player that doesn’t absolutely have to deal with him. From what i’ve heard he has a very grating personality to say the least.

  20. Haslem says:

I really hope Duke won that game. Becuase if they lost who knows what Coach K would have done next.

  21. justice says:

wow scratching duke off the list of places to apply for a coaching job…

how do u keep a straight face after coach pulls out the boys..how did he keep a straight face? this guy is too intense..

  22. nerditry says:

Billy Donovan would be a great choice to join Team USA. He developed and coached the best team in recent NCAA history during the 2x title run.

  23. GEE...Make my funk the p-funk says:

Charles ain’t gonna be no worst than the cats that have already been Gov. So he was right on not being able to mess up more than the past cats.
Personally I would love to see Barkley as a coach before a Gov. Him in any forum is going to be hilarious though.

Nothing wrong with Boom playing in the olympics in 2012. First off dudes seem to get that spark back when they in the olympics and playing with cats they know can bring it. He has payed his dues and deserves a shot and I say put money on if he is healthy come that time.

As far as who the coach will be well they will probably want to stick with coach K. I don’t see them going NBA though, I see them sticking in the college ranks. Carolinas coach perhaps to keep that whole Duke vs. UNC thang going lol.

And coach K ain’t took his balls out lol. Funny story. Now he probably had a picture of nuts or pointed to them or even had some fake ones or something. I promise he ain’t took his joints out. That story would have leaked long ago.

    New Regime Team 2012!

Does no Kobe mean no gold for us this year. Granted it would still be a stacked team. Who would have stepped up like Kobe in the 4th though? Just saying he might have to be on the olympic teams throughout till they find another as clutch as him. Or better yet as willing and unafraid as him to do what it do in the 4th. Gil got that no fear attitude. Hmmmm?

  24. Al says:

Coach K never did that .

Fran Fraschilla did that and got fired from St. John’s before Mike Jarvis coached there

The Game: Now, if the man wants to wage a war of words or get into some type of beef, I’m all for it. It would be an honor to beef with Jay-Z. That’s one of the reasons I try to bait him, but he won’t bite. Jay-Z’s smart and he’s going to sit back and wait for this to simmer down. Plus I’m way too disrespectful for the likes of a Jay-Z, and I go too hard. Jay-Z is a subliminal rapper, he uses his words and isolates you like that. I go hard, straight for the jugular, with a knife and I’m cutting your throat and you’re going to bleed all over Manhattan when you beef with me. It’s that serious. When I beef, it’s relentless. I won’t stop until one of us is dead, period. And that’s lyrically. I don’t have to box or fight, or take it to the streets. We’ll keep it a straight wax-war, that’s what beef is all about. But I’m too reckless for him.

Complex: So you think if you ever got into it with him, you’d be his toughest competition.

The Game: I would be the toughest competition he had…well, Nas was his toughest, he didn’t win the war against Nas. Nas dropped “Ether” and that was it. Everyone knows Nas won that beef. But I’ve never lost a beef. Jay-Z, he has chinks in his armor still from that Nas beef. Other than that, we can do it. I’ve 100 percent won all my beefs. Me, LL, Nas and probably only a couple of other cats can claim that. I killed the biggest group in hip-hop single-handedly. Four cats against me and I totally fucking annihilated them, so Jay-Z would be a piece of cake. A piece of strawberry shortcake, my favorite.

  28. P_Dizzle says:

I don’t doubt that Coach K story. I got a few about ol’ Rick Majerus. I think it’s funny as hell.

Coach Sloan got screwed in 2000. He won’t coach the 2012 team. He’ll be out of the league by then.

At post 12, Ducky was always a big dude and had weight issues.

    RIP Duck

  29. Ansonious says:

Barkley is very seriously thinking, considering, attempting? I’m no english major or nothing but I’m pretty sure something was suppost to go after seriously. No disrespect to the dime crew or anything just pointing that shit out. I would’ve much rather of had boom dizzle than Kidd on this olympic squad, at least he would’ve tried to score, with Lebron on the court he wouldn’t need to be that assist guy they were using Kidd for, and I don’t get why their saying dizzle going to be to old for the next olympics(isn’t Jason Kidd like 400 years old.)

  33. J-Dot says:

From my understanding, Jerry Colangelo is eyeing college coaches for the Team USA head coaching position for a couple of reasons. 1- College season ends in early April, giving the coach a little more time for prep. 2- Shorter international game matches that of the current college game, and the higher energy level is more compatible with a college coach. Names like Billy Donovan have been mentioned, and I would love that. Tom Izzo would do a great job as well.

Seriously though, Fed… My sister likes Yung Berg. Why did it have to be all that lol! Note to self: never say ANYTHING bad about Detroit if my voice is ever recorded for a song or interview. Apparently some cats in the D hold grudges.

Baron Davis has likely missed his window for Team USA, especially if our CP3 and Deron stay healthy and J-Kidd stays in the mix.

Jose Calderon thinks his groin hurts now. Wait til he gets some cheap shots this season for bumpin his gums…

  34. Tom S. says:

    RIP Duck.

  35. J-Dot says:

wow, ranger… If in fact these men are white, you feel as though they are not worthy of being classified as white? How delightful. Welcome to 2008.

  36. GEE...Make my funk the p-funk says:

I mean that is nice of Kidd and all. Makes me kinda wonder if something else is going on hmmmmm? Still I don’t care how nice someone treated me at a place I was staying. They gets no gold medal. If he giving them away like that apparently the majesticness of the medal has lost it awe with him.
    That is crazy.
Just give em cash and keep the medal.

  37. rangerjohn (mccain in '08) says:

    J-dot
i cant stand even the name obama but it would be no different had those men been black yellow brown green or purple, they have no right being classified as human. no mater who they plot to kill. on the other hand, we dont have the “whole story” either. they might have just been some dumb shits driving at the wrong place at the wrong time, didnt a black NFL player get busted for having a couple of vests, and a WHOLE LOT MORE GUNS and drugs in his suv a yr or so ago?

who knows, but if they where truely there to kill hussain well they get what they deserve.

  38. shake&bake says:

@ J-dot: My point is that these guys are white, but they shouldn’t be classified that broadly because that catergory includes me and plenty of other people who are not racist at all. These guys were methed out and had on swastika rings. I think with that going on, their skin color shouldn’t be brought up as their main trait.
Sure Maurice Clarett is black, but I think the main reason he was driving around looking to kill someone is because he is mentally unstable, not because he has black skin.
You can’t judge everyone based off of a few idiots.

  39. J Tok says:

If Coach K starts doing the Big Balls dance during a timeout, they gotta get it on the air, and then get the man a lap dance. Cause it takes some Blue Devil balls to be that man

  40. YOUNGFED says:

OK I wasn’t gonna gho all political but here we go. Why is it that everytime a black person of power(MLK, Malcolm, Obama) wants to bring about change a white person wants to kill them. It’s never a mexican, arab, or indian its alwalys a white person. I’m not saying, but I’m just saying…

…..YOUNGFED steps off soap box. lol

    @J-Dot and Gee
We ain’t that wild down here…..OK maybe sometimes lol. But that punk Yung Ferg had that ish coming. Lil punk be talking real tuff, they all most killed him. Check out the link below Trick Trick explains it all.

    http://www.sixshot.com/news/12348/

  41. Ansonious says:

It’s funny how once racism is brought into the picture nobody knows how to be the bigger man and just drop the shit. I mean were all adults right?

  42. J-Dot says:

I definitely understand better where you two (shake and ranger) are coming from, and I can definitely relate as a mid 20s black male with Wall Street dreams. Agreed that “crazy” knows no color. Agreed that no one speaks for you except yourself.

While the original post that kinda got this mini-convo going was presented from a biased perspective, I feel like some other biases surfaced in the process.

It’s tough to read that Obama’s name is despicable. Shakespeare said it best- “What’s in a name?” If you hate a man’s name, you might have a deeper issue.

It’s tough to read that these men shouldn’t be classified as humans. Hatred, discrimination and separatist views are commonly displayed by human beings. These kinds of opinions are seemingly used in a way to justify certain biases (discrimination) and actions (war) against others, and that really isn’t helping to decrease the tension.

Not out here tryin to be an internet tough-guy. Respect, y’all.

  43. shake&bake says:

@ Youngfed: Nobody is going to deny that there are white supremacists, I’m just trying to say that calling them white is a broad description that includes a large number of people. Sorry I just don’t want to be included with them in any way haha. Maybe we could describe their skin color as “moron”

  44. GEE...Make my funk the p-funk says:

We (blacks) live with things being associated with our skin color that are negative or general more than any other race I woud say. I am not saying it’s right, but it’s the way things have gone down.

So yea the dudes that possibly were trying to kill Obama were white. Not redneck, not european, not off-white, not mother of pearl, just plain ol’ white. Granted if you are white you hopefully hate to be in that same group because of your race, but you are what you are. It’s plenty of knuckleheads around the world of various colors that do crimes and as much as we don’t want to be associated with them, the bottom line is we are when they are the same color as us.

It’s not that you agree with what they are doing. It’s just that they are the same race. Shake I also wish there was a seperate color for idiots and morons, but with the mistakes and bad judgement we all make from time to time, I guess a good portion of the world would take on that color for morons at one time or another. LOL

Young I hope other young cats take a lesson on what happened to Berg on talkin reckless.

  45. YOUNGFED says:

    @Gee
That article was crazy funny, do you think he set Berg up. I’ma see if I can find Berg’s chain and buy just so I can through that ugly emblem off the bridge.

PS i’ma keep the chain though. lmao

    @Shake
If a goat takes a dump on your lawn IT’S STILL A GOAT. Plus I goat agree with Gee on this. When black people do something it’s not seperated, it just is what it is. I’m not saying, I’m just saying.

    @DIME
BTW, Who won the D-Wade Basketball? Did I miss it while I was on vaction or is it still undecided. Holla at ya boy.

  46. Big Sneezy says:

Jerry Sloan and Byron Scott are both solid choices as next head coach. It would be nice if they keep Jim Boeheim and Nate McMillan around to have some continuity with the coaching staff. D’Antoni might be run out of the league by then if the Knicks still suck. I could see him ending up coaching a another team, maybe China or something, that wants to add a little excitement to their game.

  47. that's whats up says:

  48. K Dizzle says:

Damn, that’s rough for Wayman. Hope dude is good. Undoubtably the best former baller - to musician in league history. Real music, not the Kobe, Shaq, AI attempts.
And I don’t understand why Boom can’t play on the 2012 squad if he makes the 3 year committ that Jerry gonna want. I’d put dude healthy against any point guard in the world and he’d do nuthin but bust ass

    RIP, Duck

  49. doc says:

Dam all these rappers want to battle like its 95 again. That taking chain shit dont get props no more. Now dude cant even go to other dude city to make his own money.Dickheads.They both stink I suppose anyway.I wouldnt know.I dont care who the head coach of 1012 is as long as they keep someone like Mike Dantoni who knows the international game.Im glad they caught them jokers trying to get Obama. It wont be the last time that happen.I feel what ranger and shake saying that they dont want to be lumped in one group.Thats the same thing I be preaching when a black athlete make a small mistake and get trashed for being a common thug.I know common thugs and them NBA players are not that.None of them.

  50. Gangsta of Love says:

    Obama or die!

  51. Amar says:

Sloan will never be coach of the USA team. He was an assistant in 1996, and that’s as close as he’ll get. he’s not a great communicator, he’s a dictator. when you bring a group of insanely talented cats together, it’s about communicating, not yelling. If NBA2K had stats for coaches, Sloan would get a 99 in yelling at his players.

Sloan will probably get a COY as a lifetime achievement award, but he’s not about all that stuff. He also hates the all-star game (eventhough he played in a few, iirc). His top assisstant has a COY (phil johnson), but he doesn’t. That’s hilarious.

I’d say that near-unamimously loved Byron Scott may get a look. (depends on the Kidd situation, really)

  52. rangerjohn (mccain in '08) says:

    J-DOT
see i think you have missed my point, these “white men” IMO should not be classified as human white black or otherwise. ANYBODY who would “alegedly” conspire to do what they are accused of should not be considered human but animals. no mater who they “conspired to kill” no mater what color or race.

as for the obama name, i think you again dont understand. i cant stand the name BECAUSE of the man, i do not dislike the man because of the name. i am VERY pleased he is losing his support, and i am very pleased he is coming off his high horse a little. has nothing to do with his name, his color, his religion (no mater what you believe it might be) it has everything to do with his attitude, and his POLITICS.

  53. Three Stacks says:

Ever since Obama became a possible candidate for the Democratic nomination, his Secret Service detail has been twice that of even the President. I’m assuming this is because of all the death threats.

Anyone who thinks America has come to the point where it’s ready to accept a black president, I think sorta proves otherwise. Ideally, this kinda threat wouldn’t exist. I mean, he’s not even president yet, and he’s got a target on his neck. I gotta give props to the man, he’s going into this knowing he’s putting himself in danger. That’s pretty honorable, in my opinion.

All the assassins throughout American history have been white. Maybe white folk are crazier than black folk. Imagine if a black dude tried to kill Reagan…shit would’ve gone outta hand. Black folk got more sense than that.

  54. rangerjohn (mccain in '08) says:

    three stacks
i have to disagree somewhat, NOT ALL the assassins have been white, case in point, sirhan sirhan who killed robert kennedy was not white but (as his name says) of middle eastern decent (otherwise known as asian not white)

i think black people have not had the ability or means to be an “assassin” of a president. i dont think they “have more sense” if they did then they would not be the largest portion of general population in prisons among other “no sense” type actions.

as for assassins, it was not not a white man who killed malcome x, it was a 22 yr old black man. even the king family is not sure it was james earl ray that shot MLK. it was 2 black men who shot people while they pumped gas or what not in washington dc. the point is these dispicable crimes are not “exclusively white” just like drugs and gang rape are not “exclusively black”

  55. aaron says:

b diddy came in 6th with George Karl in 2002 world championships. He had his chance and was hoisting up threes then like he does now. hell naw he shouldn’t be on ANY more USA squads. i swear I know its hard to come up with stuff everyday but sometimes yal ask questions that makes no sense. And why would any of us love a story about coach K’s balls. that’s not cool its makes this poised leader of men seem like an excitable jr. bobby knight. i hope its not a true story. i’d rather not play for a coach that threw his balls around..why the hell is any story(except flight of the conchords) cool about a dude showing his balls around to other dudes.

  56. nicky says:

im with J Dot in #42. I disagree that these fukkheads with the rifles dont deserve to be called “human” because they tryna kill somebody, as ranger john alleges. you watch the news recently? it seems like the human race dont do nothin BUT kill each other. thats what we do best. thats our pleasuurrre. sad but true. are our boys flying planes dropping bombs in iraq undeserving to be called “human” as well?

as for Why You Want Your Kid NOT to Play for Coach K:

From the moment your kid puts on a Duke jersey, he will automatically be transformed into a Total Gaywad.

It’s just unavoidable. That’s to say that the kid wont have a chance to redeem himself and shake off the Gaywadness (Grant Hill, Elton Brand), but in general, once a Gaywad always a Gaywad.

for the record, the term “gaywad” is not meant as a slur against homosexuals and as such has nothing to do with coach k’s nutsac. i just like the way it sounds. if it feels better to your sensibilities, please substitute the word “douchebag”.
