Greg Oden Update
photo by MannionWhether you like it or not, you’re going to get an update every time Greg Oden does anything on a basketball court, even if it doesn’t mean a damn thing until he actually does something in an NBA game.
The latest is that Oden is healthy enough to participate in 5-on-5 team scrimmages:
Oden update: Blazers center Greg Oden participated in his first 5-on-5, full-court scrimmages since last September’s microfracture knee surgery, and the reports were positive. In fact, it was such a big deal that team owner Paul Allen came to town to watch the scrimmages.
McMillan said Oden has not experienced any swelling, soreness or other setbacks. The team is making him sit out every other day in order to protect the knee.“The one thing he did that put a big smile on my face is he asked coach Monty (Williams) to come in at night and work with him,” McMillan said. “So, he was doing two-a-days, working with Dean (Demopoulos) in the morning and Monty at night. And he did it himself. He would come back at night and work on his footwork with Monty, and for me, that’s good. That’s great. He is on schedule where Jay Jensen and the trainers want him to be.”
Even if you’re sick of the Greg Oden stuff at this point, you have to admit that the Blazers have some amazing stuff going on. It’s hard not to really like a team that features guys like Brandon Roy, Jerryd Bayless, Rudy Fernandez and LaMarcus Aldridge.

Can’t wait to see the next dominant center in the League. Some GM’s even mentioned that if Dwight Howard and Greg Oden came out in the same year, Greg Oden would still be the consensus number one. People do not notice how advanced Oden’s footwork is in the post and the ever game changing Shotblocking ability that Hakeem and Ewing used to possess. When people were labelling Duncan as a sure fire hit even before he played one game for San Antonio, well Oden is in the same breath. Nothing can go wrong with this Guy’s talent. I have seen him play and how matured he is and patient with both his offense and defense. He will bring portland numerous playoff and eventually finals appearance. With him, portland is at least guaranteed 1 championship trophy . .Go Greg !

…Blazers are getting that overrated theme going 4 them…Alot of youth and potential but only what 2 proven players (Roy,LaMarcus)…The West is a beast of a conference now…I don’t know if they can make an impact

I really hope he stays healthy, it’d be a shame for injuries to ruin such great potential.

Patient on offence and defense? Well its been over a year since i seen the kid play but fouling out of a summer league game (10 personals) don’t seem to patient too me.

Joe Cozi says:
Better talk about the Hornets as a young up and coming contender before the trailblazers..a lot of unproven players who never even been to the playoffs, they are a good college squad in the league but the trailblazers are 5 years at best from being serious contenders!!

I think if they keep this nucleus together and add another star cuz bayless roy and fernandez all play the 1/2 positions so one of them is gonna go maybe with aldridge for a carmelo anthony or a sure fire point guard maybe mike conley by then to make them real contenders

Joe says:
@ Joe Cozi – 5 years from being a contender? Are you stoned? 2 years ago the Hornets were 39-43 and in one year got to 56-26, and the Blazers went 41-41 last year but now have 5 years until they will contend? That’s quite a double standard you’re presenting there

When I said Oden being patient on offense and defense, my thoughts were that he would normally look for his own shot. He is so unselfish that he knows his shots are going to come because his teamates will give it to him as his reward for being so ferocious on defense . . . I just reviewed Youtube clips of Greg Oden and everything points to greatness in the mold of Shaq and Tim Duncan ! I am a big dwight howard fan but dudes if you can simply compare the way both players use their pivot and hands you will know that Greg is not only athletic and powerful but also skillful on offense . . . .He is the total package on bothy offense and defense . .think of a 7 feet Amare Stoudamire on offense and a 7 feet Alonzo mourning on Defense . . .the West will see how powerful this guy is . . . I am a laker fan and waiting to see how Bynum progresses . .but Oden is it and I am guaranteeing that barring no further injuries . . .

Think Greg Oden, Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh and Al Jefferson as the Bigs for the USA team in the 2010 World Championships !!! Who can play against a frontline like that ???? Spain, with Marc and Pau ? Argentina with Oberto and the lumbering Gonzales ? Greece with Sortsianzis ??? The US will kill everyone and will just dominate in the perimeter and the paint . . .

Hope he stays healthy.
I know Greg is suppose to be tons better than Roy Hibb, but honestly as far as agility, I don’t see where Greg is that far from the big stiff lol.
Perhaps he will prove me wrong, or either Roy will step up his game. Still I am not seeing where Greg is so agile. Can’t wait to finally see him play at full strength and hopefully it will be a treat.
Really can’t wait to see him and Shaq go a few rounds.

i cant wait. been a blazers fan all my life, been through the ups and downs. CANT WAIT.
and yes i hope he stays healthy as well and the whole team can just gel and make huge pushes and championships for the next decade +.
that comment about him fouling out in summer league was some stupid shit. that kid looks at box scores and talks shit. look into why oden played that way. and also realize that was a year ago

Somebody is questioning Oden’s agility ???? Whoever is doing that doesn’t know basketball talent when he sees one . .go back to your PS2 games ok ? Oden is going to be better than Tim DUncan at least and at par with Shaq . . but I am betting that he will be a combination of both of them . .just wait and see . . .

MT Suit says:
Oden is going to be great unless he gets injured again. I have followed his progress since last year. He has been unbelievably dedicated in his rehab.
And all the stories about his strength and athleticism are true. If he stays healthy he is a perennial all star.
And the Blazers will be perennial contenders for the NBA title.

as a bball fan I’m really thrilled about the blazers, but the problem with having a lot of talent is some of those players wont get as much time or shots as they deserve or would get on other teams, i think Travis Outlaw should be traded in that respect to another team that could better use his services.
oden is an awesome player and is probably out to prove to the L he deserved the top pick.
why is every team choosing to get stacked at the same time?

Chicken Noodle Soup: Oden is anything but a stiff. He is very fast at getting up and down the court for his size and will plow through anyone who gets in his way. He has terrific footwork and handling skills for his size as well.

I wonder what the Blazers could get for Diogu/Frye/Webster/Rodriguez and a bunch of dudes’ rights.
A veteran all-star would hit the spot for them.

Don says:
Give those guys up for Mike Conley plus a future first rounder. I’d take that deal (but Memphis probably wouldn’t). Rudy could split time backing up both Roy and Outlaw. Everyone gets more minutes, everyone’s happy, and we have a pure PG.
Greg Oden is – barring injury – highly probably for future Hall of Fame. And I know he hasn’t played one NBA game yet…but I’ve seen the guy play. I don’t know of any bigs except maybe David Robinson who had that athletecism and quickness. And power…Shaq is the only one I can think of to rival him.
