Jason Kidd Splits With Nike
Jason Kidd at Peak Press Conference (photo. en.chinapeak.com)On his trip to Beijing, Jason Kidd picked up twelve more wins to his perfect Olympic record, a gold medal, and a brand new shoe. Though the details aren’t clear yet, it seems like Kidd has split with Nike and signed on to rock the kicks of a Chinese company, PEAK.
And actually, Kidd isn’t the first NBA player to join PEAK. The company had an official deal with the Bucks last season – given Yi’s presence in Milwaukee. And as Yao’s teammate, Shane Battier got a seven-figure deal with the company. In fact, when Battier’s name surfaced in trade rumors last summer, an executive from PEAK flew to Houston to talk things over. (What do you think that conversation entailed? Please, please don’t trade him. If he’s not tied to Yao, not one of the 1.3 billion people in China will buy his shoe.)
Kidd’s new kicks (photo. en.chinapeak.com)The details of Kidd’s break with Nike are a bit murky right now, largely because most of the text about the situation is written in Chinese. But of what we can put together, it looks like he’s got a pretty plain looking shoe with a triangle near the heel.

Nothing wrong with a dude lookin out for himself. Hopefully this ain’t his agent or something messing him up.
That has to be cool when you make money off of someone coming to ya squad. Shane not only probably doesn’t want to be traded but I am sure him and Tracy want to keep Yao there in China money and popularity regard.

why all the hate towards peak? they don’t sell shoes in the states anyway. plus cheap shoes aren’t always bad, the starbury’s got great media coverage and props for tryin to give all the kids a better shoe for a good price but i guess if its a Chinese company trying to sell to their own people its wrong huh. just cuz the business model doesnt work in the states doesnt mean its a bad business model. this is a huge pull for peak and will only help them with their shoe making. a big name albeit over the hill nba star WILL help them sell sneakers.

Kobeef says:
@Shanghi
The problem with peak’s business model is that they don’t respect international copywright laws and basically rip-off adidas and AND1 designs then reproduce them under the PEAK name – even going as far as making shoes with the 3 stripes.
I support the concept of a global marketplace but the Chinese government supports the idea of stealing intellectual property from other parts of the world. This also happens in the automotive industry and currently there is a Chinese manufacturer that lost of huge copywright case against FIAT for ripping off the best selling car design in europe and reproducing it in exact detail under another name.
There is a place for ethics and business. Obviously J-Kidd doesn’t agree.

shanghaibabyfacekiller says:
@Kobeef u make some valid points in regard with the design of the shoes, and yeah they do look similar, but this is a design issue that those companies need to address, either through litigation or other channels. As you said the Chinese automobile manufacturer LOST the lawsuit, so how could you possibly say that the Chinese government supports IP theft? To be honest, they do turn the blind eye in a lot of aspects, ie DVD piracy, but with big MNC’s such as Chevy, P&G, etc. the Chinese government is really quite fair, IF they choose to litigate. But yeah business ethics in China is still in its infant stage, and i only hope that the Chinese government does take real steps to address these issues.
I still maintain that Peak’s investment in Jason Kidd is a good one, as he once was the best and still is one of the better PGs in the L.
