Miami’s Point Guard Situation

With Dwyane Wade playing completely out of his mind, the Heat could very well address their point guard dilemma by finding some dude on South Beach who promises to get Flash the ball when and where he wants it.
Though they’ve got that option in hand, Miami is still in search of the best available option at the point. The latest news is that they’ve had internal discussions about trying to nab Kyle Lowry from Memphis.
The Olympics have helped to remind everyone just how ridiculous Wade is in the open court. Though Marcus Banks, Mario Chalmers, Blake Ahearn, and Jason Richards are all on the roster, none of them have Lowry’s speed and ability to get the ball out on the break. Though Lowry’s jumper is questionable, they don’t need him to be pulling from outside of 18-feet. Coach Erik Spoelstra could set himself up for success if he gets a point guard who can get Wade, Shawn Marion and Michael Beasley running teams to death.
Plus, Lowry doesn’t have the baggage that comes with the other points that Miami expressed interested in.
“[The Heat do] not want Jamaal Tinsley’s Indiana contract (three years left, $21 million) and knows the Knicks reportedly will bring Stephon Marbury to camp and not cut him.”
From Miami’s perspective, is trying to add Kyle Lowry the best option?

Nah Lowry’s too short too defend…I’d start Chalmers and groom him to be the future. Dude killed Derrick Rose in Summer League.

I wouldnt go that far as to say dude killed him in the summer league. He played good.People forget the dub D-Rose put on him in the chip. With that said all this Chalmers hype will fall off soon as he will be a bench player his whole career. And Kyle better than him anyway.

For the 666th time…Miami isn’t going to make any deals that’ll screw up their 2010 capspace. ESPECIALLY for someone like Delonte West…please.
Maybe, and I mean MAYBE in 2009, if some franchise-caliber All-Star is available, they might do something. But I’m betting that Riley is holding out for either Lebron, Bosh, and/or Amare come 2010.
Lowry makes perfect sense, because he expires this season.

I like Lowry a lot and think he’d be a nice fit, but Delonte (can step back and hit the 3, can play both guard spots, plays REALLY GOOD D) might be a better fit…

Lowery has GP-esque defensive potential and can run the break like crazy. I’d love it if he went to Miami

@ Big Shot BOB Lowry too small to defend? He’s from NOrth Philly. Enough said.
I would take Chalmers only because of his jump shot.

I think Banks and Chalmers can get it done. All they have to do is play decent D, Banks is a 2 time Mountain West Defensive POY, make some jumpers and most of all get the ball to D Wade and the Beast.

I think Richards would be a good backup and a pass first pg. They don’t need a scorer and this guy led the nation in assists 2 years in a row. He obviously knows how to get his scorer the ball, which was evident with Stephen Curry going off in the tournament.
I’d go with Chalmers and Richards. Let them gain experience along with Beastley and they’ll be a pretty good team in the next couple years.

kyle lowry isnt a bad option on that team. him and chalmers would give you a good young pg duo. banks is good but kinda iffy. if the reports are good on livingston, pick him up for the veteran minimum

If they can get lowry I say do it. This team is only a few pieces away from being back in the finals. If dwade plays like he has in these olympics along with beastly and marion, they can contend with anyone with a solid pg and center. I mean hell, riley won a chip with antoine walker as a starter. People forget that the addition of tonie and jwill (crazy right?) put them over the edge.

@Mamba, they got Posey that off-season too.
Chalmers is the eventual starter, but they need to get someone else for this year. I really like Lowry’s game, he lays it all out there every night. If they can though, they should get Delonte so his spot-up shooting can be utilitzed when teams are forced to collapse on Wade, Marion, or Beasley. Either one would be a really nice get though…

jhawks says:
Id go with Banks and let Chalmers start once hew gets his feet wet. Since Wade dominates the ball most of the game anyway, all you really need from the point guard is someone who can hit the spot up three and play solid defense. Chalmers has both of these.
August 19th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
GEE...I'm da pappy! says:
Naw just let Chalmers do his thing. He should be good enough to pass Wade that rock, run the floor and team well and get you some crucial points.

miamiVIS3 says:
The point guards they have on thier roster right now will get it done to be honest Chris Quinn (who is on the roster playing on aone year tender) could start at point and they’d be alright they should try to move Dorrel Wright (also on tender) and mark blount for an upgrade there.

but for an alternative. in 09..sign Kobe Bryant lmfao i doubt it..but it would make wade a HELL of a lot happier

I like Lowry, but I don’t see why they couldn’t just go with Chalmers. He isn’t quite as quick as Lowry but he is a better shooter and is a terrific defender. Since the PG isn’t going to be asked to do a whole lot in that offense, having a rookie out there shouldn’t be a big problem.

Dave says:
Chalmers is better than 90% of the guys I’ve seen them linked too including Lowry. He’s the perfect backcourt mate for Wade. He’s a good defensive player, a very good perimeter shooter, a good decision maker who’s a solid floor general. He’s also comfortable off the dribble but only at an average level. Chalmers game is more advanced than most rookies, he’s ready to play right away.
Chalmers to Dwyane Wade is like Derek Fisher to Kobe Bryant. Sit back and let it happen.
Miami need to be worrying about their interior and bench. That’s going to cause them a lot more problems.
