Made To Be Broken
I watch everything during the Olympics: boxing, track, tennis, soccer, water polo, gymnastics, softball, diving, weightlifting … all of it. And with the Michael Phelps 8 Golds Watch meaning NBC is showing a ton of swimming, it seems every day I’m seeing multiple world records being broken in the pool in Beijing. Anyone who’s been watching the swimming competition knows the revolutionary new Speedo “Laser” suits are largely responsible for the crazy fast times, and it’s gotten to the point now where the records don’t even mean anything. Records grow stronger and more important with time, so when athletes are breaking records in the same event two and three times in the same week, by the third time it’s just not that special anymore.
But it got me thinking: Which one-shot NBA records are in danger of going down anytime soon, and which ones will remain untouchable for the foreseeable future? Here’s what you’re looking at…
* Points: 100, Wilt Chamberlain (March 2, 1962)
* Field goals made: 36, Wilt Chamberlain (March 2, 1962)
* Three-pointers made: 12, Kobe Bryant (Jan. 7, 2003); Donyell Marshall (March 12, 2005)
* Free throws made: 30, Bob Cousy (March 21, 1953)
* Rebounds: 55, Wilt Chamberlain (Nov. 24, 1960)
* Assists: 30, Scott Skiles (Dec. 30, 1990)
* Steals: 11, Kendall Gill (April 3, 1999); Larry Kenon (Dec. 26, 1976)
* Blocks: 17, Elmore Smith (Oct. 28, 1973)

Best player in the world who cant get his team to the Olympics-Tony Parker.Just fucking with you AB.But 12 3’s gonna go,maybe steals.Everything else is chilling for a minute.

j from la says:
Kobe will break wilts 100 point record and chris paul will break the assist record. things happen. they need to have a record of how many guys get dunked on in 1 game. interesting enough i dont see mike’s name on any of these reocrds.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Tangman says:
wilts records will never be broken. I can see the three pointer record and the steals record get broken though.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
GsusX says:
3 pointers made is gonna be the next one to be broken… seems like the most reasonably attainable number
August 14th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Jah says:
In my opinion the following have the greatest chances of being broken:
- 3 pointers made
- assists
- blocks
- free throws made
- steals
Points, Field Goals Made, and Rebounds…these records seem impossible to surmount but…
…anything can happen.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
JHov says:
Yeah I think the Skiles(assist) and the Gill (steals) are the next records to go! CP3, Nash and a few others have a chance for 31 dimes and Wade,CP, Iverson all have a outside chance at more than 11 rips.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Sam I Am says:
I see steals going and maybe the free throw.
Someone determined to go for buckets and likes the pain of taking it to the rack will somehow take the free throw record.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Michorizo says:
3 pointers made and steals look to be the most reachable records … everything else seems like a stretch to beat … but records are made to be broken.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Harvey Dent says:
I could see CP3 getting the steals record. Even A.I.
Rebounds…Dwight Howard but 56 of them bitches..DAMN!!
August 14th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
E.J. Rios says:
Cp could definitley get steals, he had 9 against dallas i think. so steals will go in the near future.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Eric says:
wow - 17 blocks!
August 14th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
smity far away says:
i’d look for the assists (maybe paul, more likely deron or nash) and the 12 3s (i could see vince, or tmac or kobe breaking this record-a non pure shooter with a hot scoring streak…) to go soon. also didnt camby have 10 blocks in a game is past season? so the 17 blocks is in danger too (josh smith, camby…). I could see wade or pierce breaking the free throw record but wilt’s records are staying. for real.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
srb says:
No way rebound records are ever going. In a time when 13 rebounds is a lot - 55 rebounds is untouchable. It’s amazing when you look at guys like Wilt and Russell and how many rebounds they grabbed. Hands must have been sore.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Jim says:
I don’t think 17 blocks is going anywhere…when was the last time someone had 15 blocks? That’s like saying 65 points almost breaks 100. I think the rebounds, though, is the safest. I cannot possibly imagine someone getting 50 rebounds in an NBA game.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Jim says:
I got one you missed, AB:
Most three point field goals attempted in a game, none made:
11 by Antoine Walker, Boston Celtics (vs. Philadelphia 76ers) on December 17, 2001
August 14th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Jimmy says:
Damon Stoudamire attempted like 23 3’s in one game and made 5!!!!! It cant be that easy and plus the coach is gonna pull you out if you take that many 3’s unless you make the first 5 in a row or you pay the coach off like Damon prob. did!!!!!!!! haha
Scoring = is untouchable
Fieldgoals = are close to being untouchable
3’s = touchable
Freethrow = it can be done
Rebound = ANY BIG MAN THAT PLAYS AGAINST THE knicks HAVE A CHANCE OF PULLING DOWN 56 REBOUNDS NOW THAT THEY’RE RUNNING
Assists = will be done (i hope)
Steals = Can be done
Blocks = thats untouchable some teams can even reach ten with all their players combined.

I can see the refs giving Bron, Wade, or Kobe 31 FTs
Its funny Austin cause i was watchin swimming last night and was think the same thing about records being broken. I was wonder what the hell the swimmirs b4 used to do because these records seem so easy to break.. Makes me feel like I could go out there and brk n. lol

MoxWestCoastRep says:
I don’t see pts or boards broken ever.
Steals, assists and FTs will be broken one day.
I could see Kobe getting 30 FTs parker getting steals and Nash possibly getting assists
August 14th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Austin Burton says:
Note: The game where Cousy hit 30 FT’s was a 4-OT game. The regulation record for FT’s in a game is 28 by Wilt.
Shaq had a game where he blocked 15 shots, and Manute Bol got 15 one time. I could see someone like Dwight or Camby getting close, but Camby’s only got a few years left to do it.
Chris Paul could get 11 steals … he could do it next year when NO plays Miami. Rookie Chalmers, Marcus Banks, Chris Quinn vs CP could get ugly.
Smity you’re right about the 12 threes; it’ll probably be someone who’s not a pure shooter, somebody who would take 25 shots a game anyway like Kobe, T-Mac, Vince, etc.
The non-Wilt/Russell rebounding record is 33 or 34, set by Charles Oakley.

Are their even 55 misses in a NBA game these days?
And when most TEAMS don’t break 100 i don’t see 1 guy getting a shot but if it goes its gonna be Kobe or Lebron

smity far away says:
i’m saying, i think camby can get 17 blocks in a game. and if he doesn’t before he leaves the league then josh smith can do it. i’ve seen it happen (just playin) but for real, i think if camby was able to block ten shots in a game last year him or someone else having a crazy night could block 17 or 18 even. maybe lebron on a bunch of weakside moves or dwight howard even. or lo and behold, steve nash!! that would be the craziest game in the world…
August 14th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
GarethChantler says:
Nash had a couple chances at the 30 assist game, he threw up 23 in a playoff game against the Lakers two years ago, but if he was going to do it he might have already. CP3 also has a very legit shot at that one. AI or CP3 could get the steals. 12 3s could go down to anyone who gets hot. That’s why Donyell Marshall has part of the record.

Gilbert (Agent Zero) Arenas has a good chance to break the steals, 3pt FG made and Free Throw records. Everyone does not give him the credit but he can get to the bucket just as well or better than D-Wade and he finishes at the basket like Kobe,LeBron and such. Watch Agent Zero he is still young in his career and may still be at the start of his prime…DMV hero Agent Zero

It gets very tiresome, hearing about how “amazing” Wilt was. In today’s game, he’d most likely still be a 20/10 guy, but he wouldn’t be having any 100 point games, or 50+ boards.
Comparing didn’t eras is just a joke in general for obvious reasons…
Nevertheless, I think 3-pointers made, and free throws are obtainable.

dukesman2000 says:
These records will be in tact for a very long time. However on NBA Live I have broken Wilt the Stilt’s points and field goals made record. I have broken Kobe’s 3 pointers made, the assists and steals records, too. But the rebounds and blocks I haven’t even come close.

–by talking about how wilt would do (or what he would not do) in todays game, you are comparing different eras which is “just a joke in general for obvious reasons…”
@GarethChantler
I think i remember that steve nash game you were talkin bout. i remember cheering for him to break the record but he refused…
August 14th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

I’d say the assists would be the first one broken. I somewhat remember Steve Nash making a run at it within the past few years (he ended up with like 27 or something).

30 assists! Lots of cats seem to think that one is going to be broken, but that’s pretty damn hard! You are responsible for at least 60 points made by someone other than you.
I see the FT’s, 3-pt made, and steals as being the 3 that could be broken soon. With all the phantom fouls and star power, I can see the FT one getting broke by D-Wade or Kobe. They attack the basket and if anyone looks at them wrong or has some funk for breath, they are getting a foul called and those 2 cats are constantly on the line.
3-pters made is nutz at 12 but i can see some black hole catching fire and passing that one.
Points and Rebounds will NEVER be broken!
LOL at the ‘toine comment on his 0-11 3-pt shooting!

All the Wilt records will stand forever… you forgot 50 and 25 for a WHOLE SEASON. and I don’t see anybody breaking 17 blocks anytime soon… 30 assists might be broken in the next ten years. 11 steals also, free throws also with the new rules. If D-Wade would try he could
so assists steals and 3 pointers made in one game will all be broken within the next ten years. 55 boards or 100 points NEVER EVER again at least nog on this level

3-pointers, steals, blocks and assists, in that order.
Smoove has had a couple of double figures in blocks, one when he had about 10 in one half. Camby is up there too. With assists and blocks, a lot depends on the scorekeepers. Smoove gets robbed of a lot of blocks (particularly on the road) and on the flip, officials can be pretty generous with assists. But don’t think Skiles’s record is going anwhere soon.
Have Paul keep feeding the rock to Peja for 3s one game, and they both can rack up the stats and get a 2-for!
