Round Two: Best Three-Point Shooters Of the Last 20 Years

Chris MullinThe Former Johnnie won easily

With apologies to Michael Adams, Chris Jackson, Bruce Bowen, Jeff Hornacek and anybody else who could have earned the right to get the business from Reggie Miller or Ray Allen in round one, we’re moving on to round two of our shootout, determining who is the best shooter of this generation.

It’s not like the structure of our 1-on-1 Tournament, in which we went winner’s out to 11, all hypothetical. We’re going head-to-head based on who was the better shooter over the course of their career.

Just as it’d be in real life, two first-round matchups were decided by the slimmest of margins – Dale Ellis fell to Mark Price 18-17, and Dell Curry topped Allan Houston 19-18. And it only gets tougher from here on out…

Here are the rest of the results for round one, and the bracket for the next round is below…

Larry Bird Bracket

1. Reggie Miller (33) vs. 8. Steve Kerr (5)

4. Chuck Person (15) vs. 5. Dan Majerle (21)

3. Dale Ellis (17) vs. 6. Mark Price (18)

2. Glen Rice (33) vs. 7. Dennis Scott (2)

Jerry West Bracket

1. Ray Allen (35) vs. 8. Rex Chapman (1)

4. Mitch Richmond (14) vs. 5. Peja Stojakovic (22)

3. Allan Houston (18) vs. 6. Dell Curry (19)

2. Chris Mullin (31) vs. 7. Steve Smith (3)

We’ll tally your votes in the comments section and play off to No. 1…

Larry Bird Bracket

1. Reggie Miller – ’87-’05: 18.2 ppg, 47.1% FG, 2560 3PM, 39.5% 3FG

  14. BALLZ says:

Has anyone mentioned yet how dumb it is that Larry Legend himself is not in this competition? By my math 20 years ago was ’88, and while Bird was beginning to have the injury problems that would end his career, he played until ’92. Hell in ’87-88 Bird averaged 29.9 ppg while shooting over 41% from the three. He won the shootout in 86, 87 and 88.
Larry Legend takes all these suckas if the competition is just A. a straight three-point shootout or B. if it’s about who you want taking the last second three pointer, with apologies only to Reggie on that one.

  19. Dime Magazine says:

    BALLZ-

We said that you had to do the majority of your damage within the last 20 years to be considered for this comp…Larry Legend went from ’78-’92, thus putting him out of contention

  20. sans says:

Give Mark Price from love, giving any little guy with handles, hustle, and a jumper a dream until after HS! His hair didn’t even get messed up when he was playing!

    Reggie
    Mark Price

    Ray Ray
    Dell Curry

Mully might have been the better shooter from anywhere on the floor, but Dell only took long shots.

  21. sans says:

Give Mark Price *some* love, giving any little guy with handles, hustle, and a jumper a dream until after HS! His hair didn’t even get messed up when he was playing!

    Reggie
    Mark Price

    Ray Ray
    Dell Curry

Mully might have been the better shooter from anywhere on the floor, but Dell only took long shots.

  22. sans says:

can I keep voting like that?! Price hit so consistent for so long, winning back to backs at the 3point contest…he even showed Joe Ingles as his coach the past few years.

    Reggie
    Glen

    Peja
    Dell

  24. Diogo says:

WHERE THE Hell is nick van exel ???

    Now HE could shoot…

Rex Chapman is seeded too low, and Peja can’t defeat Richmond by any means.

And yes, Reggie said the only guy with a better shot than his was petro, and he is not even here !!!! Oh what !

  25. me says:

why did steve kerr have such a low seed? he shoulda been top 4 in that bracket.

  35. TG says:

There’s no way Reggie Miller would have beaten Steve Kerr 33-5. Or that Ray Allen would have beaten Rex Chapman 35-1. This is a joke.

  38. heartbreaker85 says:

    again.

if you gave reggie 60 seconds to shoot the 3 against anybody in the league for the last 50 years, he’d have launched and made more shots than even larry legend himself.

the key here is the basics of jumpshooting/ 3 pt shooting/ shooting in general.

normal folks need to have their feet set to make shots, esepcially 3s.

reggie didn’t. he’d get the ball and just jack it up there and it would still go in. watch the videos and compare ‘em. you could count up to 3 seconds for allen to shoot it. same with larry. but never with reggie.

to bad he never got a ring though.

  39. J Tok says:
