Spain Edges Lithuania To Play in the Gold Medal Game

Gasol will go for gold

They’re jumping for joy now. In a tight game down the stretch, Lithuania had a chance to tie the game at 89, but they came up short on a three, and Pau Gasol blocked the putback attempt to turn this game into a free throw shooting contest. The Spaniards made theirs and sent Lithuania packing 91-86.

Gasol led Spain’s balanced attack with 19 points and 5 boards. With Jose Calderon out of the lineup for the rest of the Olympics due to a partially torn right adductor, Spain didn’t have the same three-point shooting threat that they have up to this point.

Lithuania’s Sarunas Jasikevicius and Simas Jasaitis both tallied 19 points in the losing effort.

   Wow, nice comments so far, maturity level is way up.

   Carlos Jimenez played a hell of a game, and its great for Spain to at least be in the finals since it really means something for this same core group of guys to have reached the finals in all major competitions of the last 3 years.

   Beating the US on a hypothetical final will be really rough though, but there’s a slight chance it’ll happen. Either way its going to be fun.

   I thought the Spanish played without an ounce of intelligence for most of that game. They’re going to get routed by the US if they perform like that again. I don’t know why they’re so poor at going to their best offensive players, it makes no sense to me.
