Team USA’s Olympic TV Schedule

BEIJING (AP) – Welcome back to my Olympic diary. I just left the opening ceremony and it was awesome. China did a great job with the torch lighting and the fireworks.
But the one thing we all learned is Kobe (Bryant) is the most popular player here, maybe the most popular athlete at the Olympics. The crowd was chanting his name, “Kobe, Kobe,” and the volunteers who were supposed to be guiding us were trying to get autographs. It is so out of control with Kobe that LeBron James cracked, “I thought I was famous until I got here with Kobe.” Kobe is big here in China.

It didn’t take me long to figure out where Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was holding court with the international media. Just look for the scrum. What I didn’t figure though was how hard it was going to be making a photograph of the star.
With cameramen, photographers, sound techs and reporters vying for position, I dove right in. The scrum was six-deep at one point before people starting tripping on one another.
That led to the whole group falling on one another as everyone fell to the left. Then came the overcorrection to the right when new people tried to take advantage of a now open spot. Before long the group was swaying back and forth. As I backed away from the futile effort, USA basketball officials stepped in to try and give Kobe a little space.
I thought the Tom Brady press conference at this year’s Super Bowl was the more over-the-top press conference scene I have witnessed.
But this one beats it, slam dunk.
