When the U.S. men’s national team was in New York on June 30 for a one-day media free-for-all, I remember one reporter — he must have been from FLEX or something, only he looked nothing like the people who appear in the mag — who was running around asking every player who was the strongest Team USA member and who spent the most time in the weight room.
That got me to thinking, if we held an Olympics just for NBA players, who would end up on the medal stand? Pick your medalists for the following events:
BASEBALL (home run derby)
BOXING
* 6-2 and under division
* 6-3 to 6-7 division
* 6-8 to 6-11 division
* 7-foot and up division
GYMNASTICS (all-around)
TRACK & FIELD
* 100-meter dash
* 400-meter dash
* 1,500 meters (mile)
* Marathon (26 miles)
* 4×100 relay (teams broken up by divisions; Atlantic, Pacific, Southwest, etc.)
* High jump
* Shot put
* Decathlon
WEIGHTLIFTING
* 6-2 and under division
* 6-3 to 6-7 division
* 6-8 to 6-11 division
* 7-foot and up division
WRESTLING (freestyle)
* 6-2 and under division
* 6-3 to 6-7 division
* 6-8 to 6-11 division
* 7-foot and up division

BASEBALL (home run derby)
TMac (I’ve heard he loves the game and has spent some time hitting w/ the Rocket down in Houston.)
BOXING
* 6-2 and under division (Nate Robinson, just ask him.)
* 6-3 to 6-7 division (Ron Artest)
* 6-8 to 6-11 division (LeBron, Melo if it was slap-fighting)
* 7-foot and up division (Shaq, gotta assume he knocks people out the second he gets a clean shot. Just know this division would be UGLY. Sleeper: Tyson Chandler - guy’s from Compton, gotta assume he can mix it up.)
GYMNASTICS (all-around) (CDR. Most gymnasts are half anorexic. He fits the bill)
TRACK & FIELD
* 100-meter dash (TP)
* 400-meter dash (Barbosa - couldn’t decide between him and Parker, so went 1 each.)
* 1,500 meters (mile) (a mile’s 1600M, but there’s a 1500M event in indoor track too. AI. So many minutes for a somewhat older guy = endurance, that combined w/ his speed means I’ll give it to him.)
* Marathon (26 miles) (LeBron. He plays the most minutes in the league, so why not give him THE endurance race. He’d probably lose about 20 pounds of muscle between when it started and when he finished up though!)
* 4×100 relay (teams broken up by divisions; Atlantic, Pacific, Southwest, etc.) Probably Southeast with the team of: DJ Augustine, Dee Brown, Marcus Banks, and either Speedy Claxton or JSmooth.
* High jump (JSmooth)
* Shot put (Shaq)
* Decathlon (JSmooth)
WEIGHTLIFTING
* 6-2 and under division (AI, he’s gotten strong from carrying so many teams on his back. Seriously though, can’t think of anyone that it should be, so I’ll go w/ Nate again on the strength of his college ball playing corner. Football players put in some serious work in the weight room.)
* 6-3 to 6-7 division (Joey Dorsey)
* 6-8 to 6-11 division (Dwight)
* 7-foot and up division (Shaq)
WRESTLING (freestyle)
* 6-2 and under division (Nate. The Napolean complex mixed w/ his experience as a corner and obvious toughness convinces me.)
* 6-3 to 6-7 division (Raja Bell, we know he’s got a nice clothesline!)
* 6-8 to 6-11 division (PJ Brown. gotta go old school, ask Charlie Ward how his wrestling moves are)
* 7-foot and up division (Shaq. Who’s gonna take him down? Wanted to go with a younger, more agile guy, but Dwight’s under 7′, Greg would get hurt, not sure about Chandler, I don’t think any Euros could take him, and Brook Lopez would end up w/ a closed casket funeral.)
btw, you missed one:

I’m surprised no ones gone with Corey Maggette for weight lifting. Dude is one of the dieselist guys in the NBA. You know he puts in work in the weight room.
Also, I might have to give Nick Young a look at high jump. You gotta have hops to pull off a 360 behind the back dunk.

Any sprint I pick Lebron or Barbosa. Yes baseline to baseline Bron is the fastest in the league. Other guys can move laterally or change direction faster though.
A foreign guy would probably be the best boxer, Ginobili would be slick
Any Distance race, Rip Hamilton. This guy run just for fun. He loves to run, its his thing. He’ll probably do marathons when he retires.
High Jump - Bron, Josh Smith, JR
Long Jump, same 3
Shot put - Shaq, Dwight Howard, Oden
Weightlifting - same three
Decathalon - Wade, Bron
Gymnastics - gotta be a small guy, AI or cp3. Dee Brown still in the league?

nope shaq is a true brown belt and has put in about 10 yrs or so to jiu jitsu. while some of the gracies are known for or accused of “taking money for belts” the valente brothers at http://www.graciemiami.com will not do so. not to mention helio gracie (the father of the entire martial art) is at gracie miami for about 75% of all promotions over purple belt level. shaq has also trained at gracie torrence where there are rumors of bought belts but no “proof”
i have to say one thing i have noticed, people around here are asuming that because a guy is from a certain “hood” he can box. boxing is not a street fight, just because chandler is from compton or artest is from queensburrow or what ever, or labron is from akron or shaq is from san antonio (he was born in NJ but graduated and grew up in SA) that does not mean he is a bad ass.
case in point, would any of you consider melo a “tough guy”? yet his is from NYC,NY, and we all saw what he is capable of. weak ass punch, duck and RUN!

GYMNASTICS (all-around) -John Amechi (however you spell it) would come back and he would win in the final vs.Wade
TRACK & FIELD

* Marathon (26 miles) Rip - running man
* 4×100 relay (teams broken up by divisions; Atlantic, Pacific, Southwest, etc.) Tony, M. Conley, A. Brooks, Deron - I think CP3 would false start so Deron gets nod

WEIGHTLIFTING

Ha, touche, Amar.
So Ranger, you’re telling me that if a guy was born in Idaho, but raised in NYC, he’s a farmboy? Or if he was born in DC, and raised in Tennessee, he’s a city slicker?

being born someplace doesnt make you a type of person, apparently you dont read much of these posts. being born some place makes you FROM THAT PLACE. so if you where born in NYC then you are FROM NYC. like me for example, i am from san antonio but i have lived for the last 13-14 yrs in houston, but i am FROM SA.
hell just because you where born in idaho does not make you a farm boy and dc doesnt make you a city slicker. i mean damn really?
so everyone from miami is a super model? everyone from seatle is a barista? everyone from san fran is gay?
get out of here with that shit, try again

Ya, but Melo spent almost his entire life in Baltimore. If he’d spent 10 years in NYC and then 10 in Baltimore, that’d be different. I agree w/ you in theory Ranger, but on this one, I think you’re off the mark.

just like MJ was born in NYC, but moved when he was a toddler. He’s FROM NC, but was BORN IN NYC. If you weren’t old enough to remember being there, you’re not from there, you were just born there.

Celts Fan says:
@Kobeef, “Serbian people are tough and Darko’s a big dude.” Come on man. That’s like saying all people from NYC are tough. There are plenty of dudes that are soft as a grape despite being from hard areas. Everything we’ve seen from Darko says he’d get hit in the mouth once and fold up like Kwame Brown. I like where your head was at there and I was trying to find a good Euro to make a military police joke myself, but Darko definitely isn’t the one I’d've gone with and Jorge Garbajosa’s gone now. Shaq would leave Darko in a coma, pooping in a bag, and eating through a straw.

celts fan (and who ever else lol) lets see, melo lived in red hook NYC till he was almsot 9, then moved to baltimore, where he went to high school, then in 2002 he went to syricuse university (in NY) at the age of 18. so by that he lived in NYC only about 1.5 yrs less then he did baltimore, then he returned to NY for college for a single year before going to the nba, so by that count he would have lived in ny state for about 10 yrs and baltimore for about 10 yrs. being born and living half you life growing up in a place IMO would make you from that place.
its all right there on the worlds worst reference site WIKIPEDIA lol
its ok guys you can admit it this san antonio spurs fan was right AGAIN lmao

No Reggie Evans for Wrestling? You gotta figure the ball-grab maneuver would help him win the gold.
I’d also say the Joey/Stephen Graham combo would win wrestling, since they could pull the old Killer Bees move from WWF and switch half way through the match.
For boxing, I would think that training in the off-season would be a major factor, so:
- Mike James
- Caron Butler (or Kendall Gill - who actually WAS a boxer after retiring)
- Al Harrington or Paul Milsap
- Manute Bol (ok - maybe the Celebrity Boxing training wouldn’t help him beat Shaq)
Home Run Derby — aren’t there any current NBA’ers who were taken in the MLB draft? I remember Donny Marshall from UConn and the Nets was drafted as a pitcher, MJ had that stint in the minors, and Danny Ainge back in the day also was drafted.
If not, then I’d have to say Ray Allen, since he is also the best golfer in the NBA apparently.
Marathon — Rip’s mask would hold him back, so I’d have to go with Devin Harris, Luol Deng, or maybe Steve Nash as a sleeper.
Decathalon — Kirilenko or Marion. Both are freaks.
High Jump — has to be a 1-footed jumper over 6′7″, so Josh Smith, Rudy Gay, or Jamario Moon seem like the favorites.
100m Dash — gotta be about 6′ to 6′4″ and athletic, so Barbosa and Monta Ellis fit the profile of a sprinter.

Ranger, I tried to explain it before, but apparently reading and/or comprehension isn’t your strong suit.
MY point was that just because you’re BORN somewhere doesn’t mean ANYTHING. So, Melo was born in New York. Then he lived there for 9 years. That made him tough? He got into lots of big boy fights when he was 5? Get your own shit out of here. How much of your personality and current contacts did you get from before you were 9? Don’t think too hard on this.
Again, my point was that just because you were born in a certain place, you don’t automatically take on personality traits from that place. So, to reiterate, just because you were born in the city doesn’t make you a city person. It’s where you were RAISED. And Melo was RAISED, really, in and around Baltimore. And no, I don’t really want any more from you, since all it’s doing is making this page worse…

rangerjohn (McCain in '08) says:
ok 1st scientists have shown that humans take on 75% of their personality in the 1st 10 yrs of life, and they take on some 50-60% in the 1st 5 yrs so yes you would become who you are in the 1st 9 yrs. second where you “claim” or “rep” is in your head, where you are from is where you are from. melo was RAISED both in NYC AND BALTIMORE.
and once again i have stated SEVERAL TIMES where you where raised means absolutely NOTHING about how tough a person is. (but then you didnt both to read the entire thread did you?) that is how this conversation got started in the 1st place genius.
where you “rep” may not be where you where raised, where you where born or even where you live. take me for instance, i am FROM SA but i live in houston, i “rep” SA (ask anyone here). shaq for example, was FROM NJ and still “reps that way” but he lived there for only about 5 yrs. he “grew up” mostly in san antonio (we used to go watch him play at cole high school), every claims shaq to be a bad ass but san antonio is not the “mean streets of baltimore” and if melo is a “tough guy” because he grew up in baltimore OR in NYC then both places mus not be all THAT hard because he is one pussy ass bitch if i ever saw one, punch duck and run my brother run.
buuuhhhhhh bye
