Where is Danny Granger’s contract extension?
Danny GrangerThis is the summer when the first-round draft picks of 2005 can sign that all-important “second contract,” an extension with their current teams. So far, Chris Paul, Deron Williams and #1 overall pick Andrew Bogut have been papered off by the Hornets, Jazz and Bucks, respectively, and after being paid rookie-contract money this upcoming season, will step into the eight-figures per year club in 2009-2010.
One notable ‘05 first-rounder who hasn’t been extended yet? Danny Granger. While the Pacers have seemingly done their part roster-wise to hand the 17th pick the keys to the franchise — trading away Jermaine O’Neal and actively seeking trades for Jamaal Tinsley — they have yet to open up the checkbook for Granger, who put up 19.6 points and 6.1 rebounds this past season.
“We haven’t actually started that process yet,” Indiana GM David Morway said recently. “We have until October to do that, and I’m sure we will have conversations. Danny is a young player that we hope to build with, but we haven’t even begun yet.”
Other ‘05 first-rounders who have yet to be extended by their current teams include Andrew Bynum (whose camp is reportedly seeking the max), Marvin Williams, Jason Maxiell, Ray Felton and Yaroslav Korolev (oh wait…), but neither of them is their organization’s top guy like Granger is to the Pacers.
Seeing as CP, Deron and Bogut were taken care of quickly this summer, is there any reason for Granger to feel disrespected? Does he deserve the same kind of money as those three?

The pacers should be in the european league the way there roster looks and plays. This team is unheard of.

small forwards are a dime a dozen; the last thing the pacers need would be to bid themselves into some crazy contract with a guy who will never be the #1 guy on either end of the floor for a playoff team. He probably should get more than bogut, but bogut got way overpaid. with dunleavy and troy murphy’s contracts on the books… they’re probably looking to move him and one of those two ridiculous contracts together for more flexibility.
And quoting anyone other than larry bird for anything with respect to the pacers is misguided. What is this GM guy going to say “oh i don’t know, i just balance the check book and i have no clue what larry is going to do”?

bogut overpaid? if u watched the bucks this past season like i did, he was clearly their best player. i think he’s getting $60mil/5yrs, 72mil with incentives.bogut is worth much more than at least granger, deng, and okafor.

I kinda agree with AY on the small forward thing. If you give a wing player the go ahead to shoot of course they can get atleast 20ppgs (see K.Durant) They should take this time until Oct and fully define what Granger is gonna be for them future wise. His play speaks for itself but is he worth the money he expects???

He shouldnt get paid like CP and them.He aint that caliber of player.I never even met a Pacer fan not even on this site .If a player is bitching about a contract on a team nobody cares for does it make a sound?

Bogut played 78 games last year, the bucks were 26-56, and he was their second or third most important player on most nights. Granted he’ll get better when he gets older, but I don’t think that should justify paying him a minimum of 12 million per year based on his performance as the third most important player on a 31.7% winning team. Granger was the top one or two guy on a team that finished 36-46, i don’t see how granger’s agent would ask for less than bogut.

@Franchise
Just reading that story on another site. That is crazy.
Can anyone say they thought Iggy would get a contract worth $22 million more over 6 seasons than JSmoove? Based on the playoffs it should have been the other way around. Between Brand, Iggy, Beast and Miller the sixers have almost $50 million per season tied up in 4 players.

Difference between Bogut and Granger is that Bogut’s a 7-footer. Same reason Bynum will get broke off despite having just one good half-season.

M.Balla says:
IMO, Bogut->Underrated, Granger->Overrated. Granger should be a 40 million-5 years player, but since everybody overpays, a 50 million deal would be still nice. More than 50 and you’re seriously overpaying.
Bogut has been completely misused on Milwaukee. I’m surprised Mo Williams doesnt get cancer treatment around the league, even thought to be fair, here on Dime you burn him a lot. Bucks wont ever be a good team with him at the PG. Sessions has liabilities but he’s intriguing enough, and you need someone who pass the rock to Redd,RJ,CV and Bogut.

there are no 7-footers on team USA, so either 7-footers are overrated, or we’re in deep doo-doo.
and the 7-footer thing is how we got to the adonal foyle/mark blount/erica dampier/jerome james/raef lafrentz world we live in; don’t you want change you can believe in?

granger don’t deserve tha type of money. 20pts and 6 boards? come on fam bam’s, that’s seriously over paying especially when he put those numbers up on a piece of shit team. he’s not even better than kevin martin and martin plays in the west and had too share the rock with Ron Ron and company….

I’ve met Granger a few times. He’s a humble, down to earth guy. He doesn’t seem the type to bitch about money. Dude has an engineering degree so he’s smart too. I think even he knows he’s not worth more than $8 million a year at this point in his career. By his own admission, he has a lot more to prove before he can be considered a franchise player for the Pacers.

James Perry says:
I bet none of you people seen Granger play, he is a sharpshooter, he’ll get better on the boards, try to dunk on him? He’ll block you, he is also one of the best perimeter defensive players in the NBA! He could score 40 a game if he wanted to.. but he plays defense unlike half of the players in the NBA.
He never bitched about a contract either, hes stayed quite. They need to give him a contract in the 4-5 year range though. He’ll be here for most of his career. Also Pacers will be better than what you think, they improved. 36-46 without J.O. and Tinsley most of the year, T.J. Ford can run the point, and they even got a center who will make an impact his rookie year.. Roy Hibbert.
