Who Is Coming Out for Team USA in 2012?
CP3 (photo. Zack Wolfe)Chris Paul actually has a better question. Who isn’t going to come out for Team USA in 2012?
“When 2012 rolls around, I feel like everyone in the NBA, if they had open trials, would want to be part of this team,” Chris Paul said. “This is so much bigger than the NBA, representing your country.”
For the ‘Redeem Team,’ the Beijing Games have been a privilege. For all of these guys (except Kidd of course), this shot at gold is unlike anything that they’ve experienced. And they’re clearly loving the opportunity to bring glory to the U.S.
Plus, the worldwide celebrity thing can’t hurt. Instead of hearing a chorus of boos in Western Conference arenas not named the Staples Center, Kobe is being applauded whenever his face appears on the jumbotron in Beijing – no matter the sport. Last night during the women’s volleyball game they put Kobe on the big screen at one point and the commentators explained that’s why the crowd broke into a seemingly random thunderous cheer.
If Jerry Colangelo hangs on as the Director of USA Basketball into 2012, and he opens up tryouts to everyone in the League, he could very well see hundreds of pro’s walk through the doors to that gym.

some of those shots Kobe was hitting were just disrespectful, guys in his grill pulling from 3 feet in front of half court with the confidence the same confidence he would have if he were sinking a 10 footer. My mans range is stupid.

shake&bake, I like how you think. Agreed.
I wouldn’t replace Kobe for the 2012 team. He’ll be old, but he’ll be the team’s elder statesman.

@Big V . . . .AI ain’t fit for the FIBA game and we have all seen that already. He is too small to defend against bigger Euro players in a half court set.

Its too early to be talking about this. In 2004 nobody was talking about Paul, D. Williams, or Bosh being on the Olympics team. Who knows somebody nobody is thinking of could stand out in the next couple of years. People are pumped up now because the US is killing and its Olympic time. But players will lose interest in the next few years much like KG, Shaq and Amare did for this Olympiad. Not to mention the injury or personal commitments that might come up. We might as well be talking about the 2012 draft… Oh wait we do.

This is the third time Dime has posed this question in the past week. Any new developments? This is already stale and the next Olympics isn’t for another 4 years. Shit can we win the gold this year before we even talk about the 2012 squad.
