Who will be on the U.S. Olympic team in 2012?

Gilbert ArenasGilbert Arenas, Dime #19

If everyone else is already doing 2009 and 2010 mock drafts, obviously it’s never too early to look ahead. So let’s take it a few steps farther: When the Olympics head to London in 2012, who do you envision being on the Team USA roster?

Will Kevin Durant have fulfilled his “next T-Mac” hype by then and be on the squad? Would he be a starter? What about Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, Greg Oden, Rudy Gay and Brandon Roy, to name a few? What about any current college or high school players?

Will ‘08 team members like LeBron, Carmelo and Kobe still be interested in making another gold medal run at that point? Will guys like Carlos Boozer or Tayshaun Prince fall off (or watch others rise) enough to where they wouldn’t even get invited on the squad in 2012?

Or how about the vets who missed out this year, i.e. Paul Pierce, Gilbert Arenas, Monta Ellis, Joe Johnson and others?

Make your projected 12-man 2012 roster here…

  1. Allan says:

    Team USA Olympics 2012:

    Guards:

    Chris Paul
    Deron Williams
    Brandon Roy
    Andre Iguadala
    Micheal Redd

    Forwards:

    Lebron James
    Carmelo Anthony
    Tayshaun Prince
    Kevin Durant

    Bigs:

    Dwight Howard
    Greg Oden
    Al Jefferson

    Alternates:

    Andrew Bynum
    OJ Mayo
    Rudy Gay

  2. JACK says:

Iguodola is not a guard. He has no shot and no ball handling skill.

Lebron, Carmelo, Wade, Howard, Paul, Williams, Durant, Oden should be in the next 2 Olympics if they all stay healthy. Thats why teams like Argentina beat us cause their main team plays 2gether for 10-20 years since they are 18 and we have a whole new team every 4 years.

  3. Bruce says:

Prince is 28 years old now, come 2012, he will be 32. That is a tad old.

I rather have Kobe then, 34 by that time.

  4. Allan says:

I don’t mind replacing Tayshaun Prince with Rudy Gay and Andre Iguodala with OJ Mayo . . .

  5. HenryZ says:

  18. Big Sneezy says:

Send the current Portland roster minus their Euros and plus Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, and Beasley.

  19. nick says:

some are under estimating bosh’s value to team usa. currently he is not being used in what makes him a valueable asset to team usa. He is not a big rebounder or defender, has game is on the offensive end and so far they have not given him the opportunity to work his magic against other 5’s. He can cause havoc when team usa is getting hurt by other teams bigs cause he can get them outta the game with foul trouble.

What is it with everyone tossing oden on team usa without anyone actually having seen him play an nba game.

  20. jamesinva says:

    Roy for his saavy
Oden and Horford, i like that. defense right there. add in Howard too and use horford as a defensive PF?
Bayless would be FIERCE going into the lane at will.
Chris Paul fo sho with Deron Williams as the PGs?
    D Wade
    Lebron

    no kobe too old

  21. Luigi says:

    PG. CP3.Deron.Rose.

    SG. Wade.Mayo.

    SF. LBJ. Durant.

    PF. Meloooo. B-Easy. Horford

    C. Oden. Bynum.

  22. Willis says:

    Kevin Martin

    enough said

  23. Ernesto says:

I love Dime, but honestly… who really and utterly gives a shit?

But hey, while we’re at it:

Who will win the 2011 NBA title?
Will Barack Obama/John McCain be returned to office?
Will the Giants make the 2017 post-season?
Can Brazil win the 2022 World Cup?
Will NASA’s planned manned mission to Mars liftoff before or after lunch?

    Doesn’t life go quickly enough?

  24. the mamba says:

    @ luigi

I think a few of those young guys will make the team, but I haven’t seen em play so im not sure who

  25. tim says:

    Yoooo says:

    Wooooow Rodney Stuckey???? Really???

I think he will be…and since i’m a Detroit fan…I’m a Stuckey fan lol…he consistently has impressed people against this year’s Olympic team when they played…and it wouldn’t be reaching to see him there in 2012…the growth he’ll show this year alone will be immense.

  26. Chris Y says:

PG’s: Chris Paul, D-Will, Russell Westbrook
    SG’s: OJ Mayo, Andre Igoudala
SF’s: Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant (hopefully he gets his weight up)
    PF’s: Al Horford, Andrew Bynum
    C’s: Dwight Howard,Greg Oden

  27. AG says:

Dang, am I the only one that can totally see Kobe still be playing at a high level in 2012? Obviously not best in the NBA level, but still a very high level.

  28. HUH!!!! says:

PG’s Oj Mayo Chris Paul Deron Williams
SG’s Dwayne Wade Brandon Roy Kevin Durant
    SF’s Lebron Melo
PF’s Amare Staudemire Mike Beasley Chris Bosh
C’s Greg Oden Andrew Bynum Dwight Howard

  29. solomon says:

    quinn
    piatkowski
    scalabrine
    bonner
    lafrentz

  30. Celts Fan says:

Some of you guys are missing the fact this is international ball. Completely different game. The 4 HAS TO be able to shoot. You can put Bynum, Horford, Big Al at the 5, but they can’t be 4s in the international game. On to the team:

    PG: CP3, Deron
SG: Brandon Roy, DWade, Joe Johnson (thought he woulda been a better choice than Redd this year, but looks like that’s wrong.)
    SF: LeBron, Kevin Durant
PF: Melo, Bosh, David West (I’m surprised he hasn’t been said. He’s a perfect international 4)
C: Dwight, Oden (when healthy, he’s Zo at worst, right? thinking if that’s the floor, he’ll make the team)

Alternates: Chandler (backup 5,) Beasley (backup 3/4, seems like Melo, could play both,) Iguodala (tough defender 2/3,) and whoever the best other young PG of the Conley/Augustine/Felton/Rondo/Bayless group turns out to be by then.)

  31. karan says:

wade-bron-melo will be in this team till they die or retire
i see cp3, chris bosh, greg oden, deron, josh smith, mayo beasley, amare, bynum, and durant making up the rest

  32. Celts Fan says:

*Forgot to add the obvious favorite into the young PG group, Derrick Rose. Guess that’s what happens when you try to answer this kinda thing right after getting home from the bars…

Another HUGE sleeper, but a guy who seems like a perfect fit for international ball is Kevin Love. The guy’s a good enough defender/rebounder the concerns you have w/ the NBA game don’t translate to the International game, and his jumper is wet. I almost threw him on before realizing there are better, more-established 4/5s, but I would not be surprised to see him on Team USA one day (think Brad Miller, only with much more range on the jumper and a better defender/rebounder) I just can’t put him on over Melo, Bosh, or David West (he could play the 5 too, but couldn’t put him over Dwight or Oden.) I’d bet he’s on 2016 Team though, if he’s the new-age Brad Miller people think he’ll be.

  33. Celts Fan says:

*Amare’s not on cuz he begged out of this year’s Olympics after being in the past 2 summer prep stuff, so he’s off the possible list to me. He’d be on over Oden were it not for that.

  34. doc says:

I dont like Bosh game.It seems like everytime I see him hes getting horsed the fuck around out there. He seems overrated to me.People say he is the 3rd best PF which is crazy. But it could be players we dont even know about yet that could be on that team.

  35. AB_40 says:

Brandon Jennings will know the rules, Kevin Durant, Michael Beasley, Greg Oden, Andrew Bynum, Al Jefferson, Jeff Green, Kevin Martin, Rodney Stuckey, Louis Williams, Anthony Randolph, Deron Williams.

buy I think the usab system should think about the World Championship in 2010. They havn’t won this trounament since 1994. That’s 24 years of the so called greatest basketball country in the world not winning this tournament.

  36. Bobbo says:

I love this exercise. Players who have yet to walk onto an NBA court are being slotted for gold medals in the Olympics.

Here are two words for you: Devin Harris, who is an ideal international player because of his speed, defense and shooting ability. He will be 29 and at the top of his game in London.

  37. KINGJAMESFAN#1 says:

    @AB_40
That team sounds more like a select team
    My squad:
    PG:Rose,CP3,D-Will
    SG:Roy,Monta,Lou
    SF:KD,King James,Melo
    PF:B-Easy,Al Jefferson,CB4
    C:Grandpa,Superman,and BJ Mullens

  38. Luigi says:

remember. some random player will come into the league like in the next 2-3 yrs n take the league by storm. ala Curry. Derozan. high skool sophs n jrs. mos deff seniors.

dont sleep on the 2nd rd picks also. remember Ginobili [drafted 59th ovrall in 99 or 00 [idk] draft] n is the best player on Argentina.

also the 2nd rd picks can make a big impact on Team USA. i mean watch. some random player from this yrs draft. will be the 2nd coming of CP3. or somethin like that

  39. MSkittle says:

    Definitely Rudy Gay

  40. Shakers says:

    PG: CP3, D. Williams, D. Rose
    SG: Kobe, Wade, Redd
    SF: Lebron, Durant
    PF: Melo, Bosh
    C: D. Howard, Oden

This is the best case scenario with Rose, Durant, and Oden becoming stars and the best of this year’s team still wanting in and staying healthy. Redd will be getting old, but I can’t think of anyone in the L that’s young and can be that zone buster. Adam Morrison or JJ Redick was supposed to become that guy, didn’t happen. I think Al Horford, Michael Beasley, and Kevin Love could be on the short list of replacements for bigs, and Brandon Roy or Monta Ellis for guard replacements.

  41. Shakers says:

I forgot about David West. He was said above and really is a perfect fit. He needs to be on the short list.

  42. RAWSMOOVE says:

The definitive list, none others needed:

    PG: CP3, Deron

    SG: Wade, Roy, Kobe

    SF: Lebron, Melo

    PF: Amare, Boozer

    C: Oden, Bynum, Howard

This squad dominates. The prosecution rests….

  43. Batman says:

do yall know that the 10 players who where selected to the USA mens select team are actually the players who will be on 2012 squad.

  44. HowieHills says:

    PG: CP3, D-Williams, Rodney Stuckey
    SG: D-Wade, KD, Brandon Roy
    SF: LBJ, Melo
    PF: Bosh, David West
    C: D-Howard, Greg Oden

  45. Luke says:

    Guards:
    C. Paul
    D. Williams
    O. Mayo
    D. Rose
    B. Rush

    Forwards:
    L. James
    K. Durant
    M. Beasley
    A. Stoudemire

    Bigs:
    G. Oden
    D. Howard
    L. Aldridge

  46. L.J says:

PGs- Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Baron Davis

    SGs- OJ Mayo, Dwayne Wade

SFs- Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant

BIG MEN- Dwight Howard, Amare Stoudemire, Chris Bosh

  47. Halenaw says:

First off, we need guys that are interchangeable & can play multiple positions. So, with that being said, my roster for 2012 is:

Kevin Garnett-Will only be 34 by then; Mr. Do It All
Paul Pierce-Outside shooter + all around skills + defense
    Lebron James-No Comment
    Dwight Howard-Beast
    Amare Stoudamire-Beast with a jumper
    Dwayne Wade-MVP of 2008 squad
    Shawn Marion-Versatile, 3 pt shooter/slasher/defense,
Kobe Bryant-Why not? Skills WON’T be any worse than now
    Chris Paul-Best PG in league
Deron Williams-2nd best PG in league
Kevin Durant-Looks to be on track as a future star
    Joe Johnson-Shooter, shooter, shooter

  48. Halenaw says:

I have to clarify my PG comments.
    Chris Paul-Best U.S. born PG
Deron Williams-2nd best U.S. born PG
I wish Nash was American! Back to back MVP, ultimate playmaker!

  49. The Natural ROY says:

…yo Mamba, I don’t know how you leave out Oden. I mean I presume you are a Laker fan and all (your moniker), but I have a hard time seeing Bynum making the 2012 squad over Oden.

If anything I think Howard, Oden and Bynum should make the roster but if it were gonna be two, I think Howard and Oden.

(How’s Greg not even one of your alternates?)

  55. IzZy says:

My roster for 2012 would go as the following:

    Starters:
PG-Chris Paul(He is going to become way better and smart by 2012 of the experience in 2008)

SG-Dwayne Wade(He showed his heart and ability by being the top US player in avg/ppg at Beijing)

SF-Kobe Bryant(He is going to be a little old but still a star just like Jordan in the Wizards)

PF-Lebron James(He is going to be like a Magic Johnson and play multiple positions, and he is going to become much stronger so he could most likely start at this position)

C-Dwight Howard(Just like how Lebron is dedicated to weights Dwight is going to become a lot stronger and the more stronger he will get the more unstoppable he will be)

    Bench:
    PG-Derrick Rose
    SG-Brandon Roy, Joe Johnson
    SF-Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant
    PF-David West

    C: Dwight Howard

Bench: Wade(talent to be the starter but played really well as the sixth man), Deron Williams, Al Jefferson, Chris Bosh, Brandon Roy, Kevin Durant, Kevin Garnett, and Danny Granger.
