Who will be on the U.S. Olympic team in 2012?
Gilbert Arenas, Dime #19If everyone else is already doing 2009 and 2010 mock drafts, obviously it’s never too early to look ahead. So let’s take it a few steps farther: When the Olympics head to London in 2012, who do you envision being on the Team USA roster?
Will Kevin Durant have fulfilled his “next T-Mac” hype by then and be on the squad? Would he be a starter? What about Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, Greg Oden, Rudy Gay and Brandon Roy, to name a few? What about any current college or high school players?
Will ‘08 team members like LeBron, Carmelo and Kobe still be interested in making another gold medal run at that point? Will guys like Carlos Boozer or Tayshaun Prince fall off (or watch others rise) enough to where they wouldn’t even get invited on the squad in 2012?
Or how about the vets who missed out this year, i.e. Paul Pierce, Gilbert Arenas, Monta Ellis, Joe Johnson and others?
Make your projected 12-man 2012 roster here…

Iguodola is not a guard. He has no shot and no ball handling skill.
Lebron, Carmelo, Wade, Howard, Paul, Williams, Durant, Oden should be in the next 2 Olympics if they all stay healthy. Thats why teams like Argentina beat us cause their main team plays 2gether for 10-20 years since they are 18 and we have a whole new team every 4 years.

some are under estimating bosh’s value to team usa. currently he is not being used in what makes him a valueable asset to team usa. He is not a big rebounder or defender, has game is on the offensive end and so far they have not given him the opportunity to work his magic against other 5’s. He can cause havoc when team usa is getting hurt by other teams bigs cause he can get them outta the game with foul trouble.
What is it with everyone tossing oden on team usa without anyone actually having seen him play an nba game.

Some of you guys are missing the fact this is international ball. Completely different game. The 4 HAS TO be able to shoot. You can put Bynum, Horford, Big Al at the 5, but they can’t be 4s in the international game. On to the team:
PG: CP3, Deron
SG: Brandon Roy, DWade, Joe Johnson (thought he woulda been a better choice than Redd this year, but looks like that’s wrong.)
SF: LeBron, Kevin Durant
PF: Melo, Bosh, David West (I’m surprised he hasn’t been said. He’s a perfect international 4)
C: Dwight, Oden (when healthy, he’s Zo at worst, right? thinking if that’s the floor, he’ll make the team)
Alternates: Chandler (backup 5,) Beasley (backup 3/4, seems like Melo, could play both,) Iguodala (tough defender 2/3,) and whoever the best other young PG of the Conley/Augustine/Felton/Rondo/Bayless group turns out to be by then.)

*Forgot to add the obvious favorite into the young PG group, Derrick Rose. Guess that’s what happens when you try to answer this kinda thing right after getting home from the bars…
Another HUGE sleeper, but a guy who seems like a perfect fit for international ball is Kevin Love. The guy’s a good enough defender/rebounder the concerns you have w/ the NBA game don’t translate to the International game, and his jumper is wet. I almost threw him on before realizing there are better, more-established 4/5s, but I would not be surprised to see him on Team USA one day (think Brad Miller, only with much more range on the jumper and a better defender/rebounder) I just can’t put him on over Melo, Bosh, or David West (he could play the 5 too, but couldn’t put him over Dwight or Oden.) I’d bet he’s on 2016 Team though, if he’s the new-age Brad Miller people think he’ll be.
August 2nd, 2008 at 10:58 am
Celts Fan says:
*Amare’s not on cuz he begged out of this year’s Olympics after being in the past 2 summer prep stuff, so he’s off the possible list to me. He’d be on over Oden were it not for that.

buy I think the usab system should think about the World Championship in 2010. They havn’t won this trounament since 1994. That’s 24 years of the so called greatest basketball country in the world not winning this tournament.

I love this exercise. Players who have yet to walk onto an NBA court are being slotted for gold medals in the Olympics.

Shakers says:
PG: CP3, D. Williams, D. Rose
SG: Kobe, Wade, Redd
SF: Lebron, Durant
PF: Melo, Bosh
C: D. Howard, Oden
This is the best case scenario with Rose, Durant, and Oden becoming stars and the best of this year’s team still wanting in and staying healthy. Redd will be getting old, but I can’t think of anyone in the L that’s young and can be that zone buster. Adam Morrison or JJ Redick was supposed to become that guy, didn’t happen. I think Al Horford, Michael Beasley, and Kevin Love could be on the short list of replacements for bigs, and Brandon Roy or Monta Ellis for guard replacements.
August 4th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Lebron James-No Comment
Dwight Howard-Beast
Amare Stoudamire-Beast with a jumper
Dwayne Wade-MVP of 2008 squad
Shawn Marion-Versatile, 3 pt shooter/slasher/defense,
Kobe Bryant-Why not? Skills WON’T be any worse than now
