Would you play for more money overseas or less in the NBA?

J.R. HoldenJ.R. Holden (photo. CSKA Moscow)

If you watched Team USA beating Russia over the weekend, you saw J.R. Holden have his moments where he was giving guys like Deron Williams and Kobe buckets, finishing with 17 points against the best collection of guards on the globe.

Holden’s story has been well-covered, including by our own Andrew Katz in Dime #42 (“World Game”): the Pittsburgh native and former Bucknell star was a standout pro overseas when he was approached about playing on Russia’s national team, and following an official stamp of approval from Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, took over as the national squad’s point guard. Holden drained the title-winning shot in the EuroBasket 2007 championship game, and QB’s Russia into the ’08 Olympics as their second-best player behind Andrei Kirilenko.

During the Russia/USA game, ESPN announcer Fran Fraschilla said that Holden could make a living as a backup PG in the NBA, but because of his advanced age (31) and the fact that he makes so much more money playing in Russia than he would make in the League, he would most likely stay overseas for the remainder of his career.

If you were in Holden’s position, and were approached by NBA scouts offering a reserve spot on a team, what would you do? If you were born and raised in America, had never had the opportunity before to play in the NBA, but you were making very good money and held superstar status in another country, would you take your shot at the League or play overseas?

It depends on the money. If you getting 500,000 overseas and 300,000 from the league,if you stacked some paper up already you might take that shot in the league. But if the league offering u that 300,00 and somebody overseas offering millions its not even a thought process anymore.

  2. d says:

in the end whatever gave me the most PT. I think it wouldn’t be a bad thing to go overseas. Good experience. See the rest of the world and get paid well.

  3. Dime Magazine says:

gotta go with Doc – it all depends on the money you’re talking about and the difference between the offers.

  4. Marcel P. says:

Doc has it right, but I have an amendment to that.

For someone like Holden, he’ll stay in Russia professionally out of respect to the Russian government, his spot on the national team and the finances.

However, if I was in my mid-20′s, a solid player and an American citizen, I would make the money for a few years until I hit my early to mid-30′s and then go to the NBA as a backup or if I’m lucky a starter.

If guys like Gary Payton, Sam Cassell and some others can be older reserve guards in championship teams, I know I could find a spot on someone like the Grizzlies, Oklahoma City whatevers and some of the weaker teams in the NBA.

  6. shake&bake says:

Definitely depends on the difference in money you are being offered. If the money is close, then I’d much rather play in the NBA because it’s the best league in the world.

  7. Brown says:

For me, it would come down to winning. Even if the money was similar, I wouldn’t from a championship-contending European team to play for a lottery team in the NBA. It would have to be a championship-caliber team and they would have to promise me a certain amount of PT. You don’t go from a star on a contending Euro team just to get spot minutes on an NBA team, even if they won the championship.

That, along with the difference in money, would sway my decision.

  8. Meica says:

I think if you are a star player, you do not want to leave that league (regardless of the money) unless you feel as if you could be an equal star in another league. If you are a true player, it’s the playing-time that I’m sure makes the hugest difference.

All that being said, as Holden ages he may need to scratch the itch of the boyhood dream I’m sure he’s had: to win the NBA Finals. So, if a contender offered him a reasonable deal and who needed his services, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come home to try and win the ultimate honors.

  9. doc says:

2brown thats easy to say but believe when I tell u this ball shit is a BUSINESS.If you just gonna chase winners and not go for your money your career will be over when you 35 and you will have missed out on Millions.Millions is a lot of dough to miss out on.You get that dough first and make where you play a winner.

  10. Kudabeen says:

Coming from the prospective of a person who has missed an opportunity to get PT and exposure on a lower scale D2/D3, to pursue a walk-on type opportunity on a D1 scale (hence the name)…I would take the money overseas (stack) make as strong a case as I can to show that I belong in the L, then try to get that opportunity to compete on “the highest level”.

This is all contingent on where you are at in your career/development.

  11. doc says:

@meica I ball everyday and do it good enough where I dont have to get a real 9 to 5 no time soon,Im as real as they come and it ALL about the MONEY.Thats like saying you would work for a company for cheap because they got a name over a nameless company who is trying to have your bank account on full. The SAME thing.

  12. Austin Burton says:

I look at someone like Charlie Bell, who was a full-fledged celebrity and making a ton of money in Europe, but he eventually came to the NBA for less money and a lesser role on a bad team. Obviously he had to, as someone said earlier, scratch that itch of playing in the NBA.

    http://dimemag.com/2007/09/charlie-bell-is-about-to-get-paid/

  13. Imperial-Mel says:

Money talks loud but if you have the passion for the game, and have already had a Euro chip, why not take a cut and get you a NBA chip. Then you could sit back and let your royalties make money for you….its all about how much you love the game

  14. Kudabeen says:

Money for me is not as important if I’m making more than enough to live. My background and resources make it so that I can make 300 thousand or 1 million and still be able to make things happen. I don’t need to be the riches man in the world to be rich.

Wealth is the goal and what you do with what you have determines your potential for wealth. A lot of these cats come out of college or where ever and make hundreds of thousands or millions, but they start spending that amount and more just as quickly…

Money would take a backseat to the opportunity to compete. I’m going to be paid WAY more (in many cases) than a Cop, Doctor, Teacher, Lawyer, etc. They are all respectable jobs and those individuals are capable of having stable and progressive households and family structures.

Holden – I don’t know his family situation or if lives in Russia when he isn’t ballin’. If i’m 31/32 years old and an NBA team offers me a legit spot for at least 60% of what I’m making (after taxes)…I’d take it for the opportunity to see if I can etch my name in the NBA history books, compete with “the best” and being able to have my family closer I’d take the opportunity. The competition and comforts of being home (for some, because home for others could be depressing and full of drama). Again I don’t know Holden’s situation with family, being smart with money, and his desire for competition…

Soon we won’t be able to just assume that the NBA is the most competitive league…

The order of competition seems to be:

    NBA
    Euroleague
    .
    .
    Then what?

  15. Michorizo says:

The game will not always be with you, so you take the money to ensure security.

  16. hahns says:

im gona expose my ignorance, but… is there even an actual “euroleague?” i was under the impression that most countries had their own league…like italy, spain, france, russia….so that armani jeans wouldnt play fc barcelona, or real madrid, or cska moskow, macabi, or olympiakos. can someone explain?

  17. foscheezeeee says:

Biggie Smalls said it best: “GET MONEY”.
Heard he get close to 2mil euros a season at cska.. dam

  18. doc says:

Yeah its easy to say but you dont see many players scratching that itch. Most people get a itch when money coming.

  19. Austin Burton says:

Will Bynum (Pistons), Maceo Baston (Pacers) and Willie Solomon (Raptors) are guys I can think of right away who left a more lucrative situation overseas to take a crack at the NBA.

  20. doc says:

AB Charlie got 3 years and 9 mil here though. Its less than 2 for 10 but its still mills. If the Bucks were offering hundreds of thousands he woulda bounced and we all know it.

  21. doc says:

Lets see the difference in money they making. As I stated in the 1rst comment. If you got money saved up you can leave SOME on the table. But you would be a fool to leave a lot.

  22. Austin Burton says:

When Charlie first came over, he was making less than a million; I wanna say something like $400,000. The 3-year, $9 million was his most recent free agent deal after a couple seasons with the Bucks.

  23. bballinca says:

One’s playing career where they can earn good money is very limited. What is the average legnth of a pro career as a bball player? You take as much as you can get and learn how to make your money work for you.

Most of the top American born players that play in Europe actually end up making Europe their home and where they raise their families.

  24. doc says:

All that after making money AB.You make what you worth first regardless of where it is.When you up you can make decisions like that.Just like the Bucks offer was after he played a season. That overseas offer wasnt on the table until last year.He didnt turn down 10 mill for 400000.

  25. doc says:

2bballinca They stay over there because them people worship you like you Kobe. Its worth it.I only dont stay over there because I got to much Philly in my blood. But they give you a fucking house and car.You really dont have to pay for shit.I can just got the D-league now and be one step away from a call up but ME,I like money better than basketball and Im going where they throw out that bread at.

  26. Austin Burton says:

For the record, I’m also of the belief that you should always aim toward financial security (especially if you have a wife and/or kids), but there’s also something to be said for lifestyle and personal fulfillment.

Hypothetically, if someone like JR Holden walked away from $800,000 in Russia to take $400,000 in the U.S., he’d still be providing for his family more than well enough; if in fact he just preferred to live in the U.S., wanted to chase his NBA dreams, wanted his kids to grow up near their grandparents, whatever the case may be. And when he’s done playing he could easily get well-paying coaching jobs or scouting jobs or something outside of basketball utilizing the degree he got from Bucknell and still provide nicely for the family.

Money’s money and money’s always good, but I don’t fault anyone for taking less if the outside factors are important enough to them.

  27. bballinca says:

Doc, trust me I know what you mean. I was lucky enough to play overseas in Germany after college. Had a great time and looking to get involved in it in other aspects as perhaps a scout. The two big stars on our team would get hounded pretty much everywhere they went in town.

  28. doc says:

AB thats my point.I said you can do that all day.We in agreement then.Im just saying going for 400,000 over 8 mill is a little to much.

  29. Michorizo says:

Some people would rather stay here in the states than cross the ocean to play only for the sole reason of being afraid of change.

  30. bballinca says:

#16 yes there is a Euro League where the top teams from all of Europe play each other. There are several variations below that as well were the second tier teams play each other as well.

Other thing I like is that if you are in say the first division in your country league and you suck there is a chance that you might get demoted into a lower division. At the same time a lower division team can get moved up. I wish they would do that here so a team like the Clips in the past would get the boot.

  31. Austin Burton says:

The impression I get — and I could be very wrong — is that the leagues run concurrently. As in, you play two games per week: One with your team in the regular league (i.e. Spain’s “A” league) and the other with your team in the Euroleague. You’re playing for the same team the whole time, BTW.

  32. doc says:

My team played 2 games a week but it was the same league.I was in Poland last year.It was okay but im a free agent right now and I need that cheddar.

  33. ML says:

Doc you said you as real as they come? How come your not in the League partna? Lolz your a real funny dude.

  34. Godzilla says:

I would play in the NBA for free.

why would i want to play in this euroleague?

  35. Logan Light says:

    http://www.daveramsey.com<—– go there

Go get some financial peace university classes and the league minimum will have you set for life. I’d easily play in the NBA for less money than overseas. The experience over there would be amazing for sure, but you can’t beat the NBA… and they’re about to prove it.

@ DIME – forgive me for advertising, but the dude is serious about some finances. If more players in the L would learn about some Roth IRAs and less about 26 inch rims, they would be set. Just saying…

  37. doc says:

@ML what being a real baller got to do with the league. You can be a real baller and play at the playground for rec.You the funny dude.I know Im real enough to bust that ass.

  38. ML says:

Ha bust my ass. Homeboy i wanna see you try that. You wack. I saw you in the Summer League didn’t get the burn you though you should get right?

  39. weezy f says:

europe would be better to live in but if you even take 5 million over 2 years, to most people thats more money then they will see in a lifetime..you just need to live a decent life you dont need to have the most expensive house you jsut need to live comfortably and then you can have security by putting the rest of the money in the bank..here in nocal the houses are cheap so you can get a good 5 bedroom house for like 350,000 you can put the rest of your 5 mill in bank and youd be set for life

  40. Logan Light says:

    @ bballinca

Where did you play in Germany?

  41. doc says:

@ML it wont be hard. You was watching me.Thats how its always gonna be.Watch me prick.I know I dam sure wont be watching you nowhere.

no, i would never take less money in the nba vs more in Europe. Really, is the league that impressive??? yes I love it, but i do not love it more than money. Be a benchwarmer on the Pacers so I might get the chance to guard D-Wade for a few plays? Terrible. This whole flight to Europe thing by certain players is about money man. Ur looking at a 1.54 exchange rate, less games, more time to hang out and eat and drink. Lets think about it, do u really think all those Euros came over here to America bc they wanted to go to the weesh Waffle house and have fat people cheer for them while having very few friends and family? No. They came here bc the NBA paid a lot of money and it gave them a chance to make a lot and secure a good life. The reverse rationale here should really be the same. Please dont respond with some useless rant about hip hop culture, grow up, make some money.

  47. weezy f says:

but if your great here then you get lucrative ebdorsement deals too..do they get endorsment deals in europe? thats a real question btw because i dont know if they do

  48. AY says:

i challenge anyone who really says they will take less money. Really, you’ll take less money for a job just because of the company’s name? This is not a career that last 40 years, these guys usually play 10 years and have no other skills so they need to make the most out of every one of these 10 years. You say 400000 a year is a lot of money, but if you can only work 10 years, it isn’t. So if someone gave you an extra 200000 a year, you telling me you’d rather not go overseas? No F-in way. Highest bidder.

  49. Logan Light says:

Thanks Weezy – we all needed that!

  50. doc says:

@weezy Im good pimp.I just came back because he said something about me saying im a real baller.A real baller is somebody who do it for the love. You can be in the NBA or on the playground and be a true baller.

  51. your favorite writers favorite writer says:

endoresements?? im a fan of guys like Rodney Carney or a Chris Wilcox or even a Mike Miller, but really, really tell me what endorsements those guys have? When was the last time you saw Devean George pitch anything. Hypothetical situation : Would u take a job at the United States Postal office for 40k when the Parisian post office is offerring say 110k? Maybe u can get a sandwhich endoresment for 15k here. Still…

  52. doc says:

@aY thats what Im saying. It aint like you guarenteed that ball money and when you 65 you retire.10 years is A LOT by ball standards the average is like 3 years.

  53. weezy f says:

doc yea i know e shouldnt have came at you like that you doin somethin with your life at least i mean im fresh out of high school and stay home all day id switch places with you any day

    @ your favorite writer
i said if you were good yea those guys are good but they havent proven themselves yet and arent big names really

and is anyone tired of rick kamla commentating these games i didnt know he was psychic and knows what everyone even the refs are thinking haha he makes me laugh tho

  54. doc says:

@weezy thats where I was at outta high school to.You a youngin you can do whatever right now just study up on it and work hard at it.

  55. bballinca says:

I can’t believe someone is talking smack to Doc. THe guy talking smack paid money to watch the game while Doc was getting paid and playing in the game. Doc is closer to the NBA than anyone else here.

To the other poster who said he would take league minimum and be happy with that and be set for life. If you believe that you are a fool. After agents fees, union dues, day to day expenses and taxes (you don’t even want to know what % bracket you’ll be in) there isn’t that much left for you to retire on when your career is over. You will be going back to working some sort of job.

You go to Europe and make millions and you might possible be able to avoid this.

  56. GEE...Low down dirty even says:

I think this is more along the lines of a close offer more than millions vs. thousands.

A lot of the decisions is based on what you going after. Are you going after American fame, P.T., straight money, family, NBA championship or just any championship you can get your hands on.

Me, I think I would stay in the L even if it meant somewhat less. I would prolly do overseas later. Even though by the time I decide to go over it would prolly be for less than what I was already makin. Still for me, many different factors would make me decide to take less and stay in the L.

To each there own though. Main thing is just don’t get injured regardless of where you at lol and of course always have a plan B….and C and D for that matter lol.

  57. Austin Burton says:

@AY — It’s more than just the company name, it’s an entire lifestyle and culture change. You can work for Target or Wal-Mart, but at the end of the day you (not YOU specifically…I’m being hypothetical) still work in the same industry in the same culture. But if you’re from the U.S. and have grown up here your entire life, and the highest bidder for your services is in Moscow or the Ukraine or Helsinki, I think that would play a factor in your decision. Especially if you have a family.

  58. ML says:

Doc you a funny dude. For your pee ass brain. You made 350,000. Whoa good job bum ass. Haha. You said you eating good & fucking good? Yeah i bet. No girl would touch you within 15,000 Feet. Bitch Ass.

  59. weezy f says:

  60. Luigi says:

ill say playin in the NBA is a dream come true. but if ur a 2nd rd draft pick..thats not gonna make the team or if u do make the team..ul probly be the 12th man..for me its all about PT. as some ppl said above..

whats the point of being in the NBA if ur not gonna play

n overseas gives great vacation spots. that your family can go visit and enjoy the life. while u get to be a superstar for [insert city here].. but honestly. id rather play in the NBA.

  61. doc says:

  65. bballinca says:

ML where do you play at besides on 8ft high rims against elementary school kids?

  66. Logan Light says:

    @bballinca

Are you serious? $275,000 for a rookie – minimum. Let’s say you live in “poverty” and “only” save $10,000 a year in a Roth IRA with an interest rate of 11.4% (which is an average – From January 1970 to December 2007, the average compounded rate of return for the S&P 500, including reinvestment of dividends, was approximately 11.4% per year (source: http://www.standardandpoors.com). During this period, the highest 12-month return was 61%, and the lowest was -39%). You start playing ball at age 24 and are blessed to have a 10 year career – ONLY MAKING THE MINIMUM. After a year that goes up to $350,000 and after your 10th it goes to a cool mill.

You start with $10,000 and make the maximum contribution of $5,000 a year (with your other $5,000 that you are saving you can open another account). Come age 55 you have a nice $1,630,219… and that is TAX FREE because you pay taxes on your money at the front end.

And that’s with a savings plan of only $10,000 a year off of an average salary of $350,000… which is roughly 2.8% of your income.

I’m just saying – I could make it work. Compound interest homey.

    LL

  67. your favorite writers favorite writer says:

Lgan, ur math was str8 homie and u made a good point, and im sure the next 38 years might return something similiar, worse or better. whatever, thing is we all the the markets dont promise tomorrow and these days its not an investors market, its a traders. Lot of scalping in and out. from 1970 to now u wittnessed the greatest bull market run of all time. if we flat line for a while returns can be tough. plus a lot of IRA accounts cant short and are just long equities which can be dangerous. Also adjusted for inflation who knows where data leads. Regardless, the point is to save some money and not be an ignoramus.

  68. weezy f says:

damn light you went all wall street on us haha!

  69. bballinca says:

LL, let’s assume all your figures are correct. You are 55 years old and have $1.6 million in the bank in 30 years. (Because we both know with inflation $1.6MM 30 years from now is nothing.)

How long do you plan on living? How much do you plan on taking from the $1.6MM w/o reducing the principal? At 55 you are not old enough for Medicare so you have to buy medical insurance. Do you plan to have the same lifestyle you do now? There are some other tax implications involved.

Let’s assume you are living on the interest only and I’ll give you 5% on that. So $80k a year or $6667 per month gross. (Again in today’s numbers that’s not bad but 30 years from now that’s nothing)

So housing in CA in today’s numbers will be for a standard 2bd 2 ba home to rent: $2500.00
    utilities $250
    medical $500
    food $500
    car $400

that alone is $4,150 a month. I wouldn’t call that living well especially 30 years from now things will be much more expensive.

  70. ML says:

@Doc you asshole this is not my Mom’s computer. Second of all don’t write a check your ass can’t cash.

@Doc where’s your mom’s number. She had my phone blowing up. Dick Face.

  75. daquest?on says:

  76. hahns says:

lol damn ML, for real. doc trying to do his thing and get in the league. what are you doing? if youre as good as you say, you should make a run w/ some of the summer league teams or dleague..instead of just talking

  77. ML says:

Weezy. He’s an asshole. He talks alot of shit. Sometimes he doesn’t know how much shit he talks. It’s easy to talk shit on a computer screen. And the thing is the people running dime let’s him get away with it.

  78. Logan Light says:

    BBALLINCA

    You’re right.

The math is right… there are some everyday calculations that I assumed. My point is that someone could make it work. You read all too often about players that lost their paychecks. If people were smarter with their money they could do more. Live better and GIVE better.

    @Favorite Writer
You’re right too. I certainly can’t tell the future… but saving is always a good thing to do.

  79. doc says:

  81. ML says:

Doc i’ll bee out their in 2 weeks. Dumb ass bitch.

Logan Light, people in general not jsut NBA players need to be better with their finances. As I showed you even with your numbers thigns look pretty bleak if you aren’t saving/investing money. You can see how some of these guys end up broke even with how much money they are making. Alot of them want to give my to friends/family and/or make some poor investment decisions. At my old job I got to see the personal finances of several NBA and NFL players and sometimes you would just shake your head at thier financial decisions and/or how poorly they were being guided by so-called financial advisors/agents.

  83. Logan Light says:

    True.
SO – point is? Be smart with your money… and I would stay in the states for less money – haha. That’s how this started, right?

  84. daquest?on says:

    what started this feud??

  85. doc says:

yeah agents will get you if you aint up on it.I done heard about agent swindling dudes for mills.I would kill one of them fuckers first.@Ml whatever. If you was for real I wouldnt even let you come in the heart of north philly asking for somebody because you dont like them.

  86. bballinca says:

That’s right Doc, make money and spend money. Just don’t end up like Scott Storch…http://the9elements.blogspot.com/2008/07/super-producer-turned-loser-scott.html

  87. ML says:

@Doc aka Dick Face.If i was real? Nigga you don’t know real. If it snuck up on you. Get the fuck out of here Dude. Like i said. Your not a real bball player. Stop fronting.

  88. doc says:

  89. Brandon Hoffman says:

It would depend upon where I was at in my career. Since my career as a basketball player would be short-lived, my first concern would be earning enough for retirement. If I was in the later stages of my career, and had saved enough for retirement, I’d take a crack at the NBA. If not, I’d earn as much as I could overseas so that me and my family were taken care of.

  90. doc says:

@bballinca.What happen to scott storch. He fucked that paper up?

  91. weezy f says:

must be that bugatti fuckin him up too!

  92. ML says:

  94. bballinca says:

Doc, yup Scott Storch apparently blew through all that cash.

  95. ML says:

Don’t worry about it. I don’t give a fuck about him. What’s your background Smurf?

  96. bballinca says:

Smurf? What are you going to call me next an Oompa-Loompa?

  97. doc says:

im not a real dude AND im fake as shit, plus for my dumb ass mind. What the hell are you talking about?I been said you got it dog.I hope you is the shit at ball or something as much shit you talk.I aint mad though.Like I said Im at the Hank Gathers Rec.22nd street. all day.I aint for arguing except if its about b-ball on this site so you won.Got me all out of character responding to that BS.I already know you aint grown by the shit you saying and how you writing it so im done.

  100. daquest?on says:

    theres no need for disrespect

  101. doc says:

We all agree to disagree sometimes.Thats what the site for to read up on ball and state your opinion.Me or nobody else no dumber because of opinions.Like u ML u think im a bum. That dont make me mad.Now if nobody would pay me I would think so too but im good.People call Kobe a bum out in this world so thats cool. But what shit I talk to you for your hate to be so strong on me.Because the reason you say you hate me is what you doing on here.Talking shit that dont got shit to do with ball. You talking about who a real dude or not.Read the comments,i never said shit about you being real or fake. You cant even tell that without knowing a person.Dog i aint gonna never get mad on a computer my life to good so if you writing words trying to make me mad or something it aint gonna happen.I was coming back at first because I always do with haters but its on some past funny headscratcher shit now like whats wrong with this dude.It aint me you see other dudes saying the same shit.If you disagree on my points you say that then under that you put what you think about the subject.Basketball, not who you think a funny dude and all that.

  102. M Intellect says:

  103. K Dizzle says:

    What’d I miss? lol

  104. the_baconator says:

maybe this is just me being delusional, but where i’m from a mil is a crapload of money. if the nba is offering me 1 mil and the euroleague is offering 4-5, i’m going nba. not only cuz it’s closer to home, but also cuz of the history. i mean, i’d take a 3-4 mil pay cut just to play for the celtics, laker, hell even the knicks. besides, when you get mixed up with all that money it does stuff to ya, like with latrell spreewell and his recent foreclosure. like i said, i’m prolly being delusional, but if you have a chance to do something you love for a team you grew up loving, who cares about the money? as long as you can support a family, its all good, right?

  105. bballinca says:

baconator, when your future is at stake and people are seriously thinking about giving you that kind of cash you’d have a different answer. Also if you are of NBA ability it isn’t so much a dream anymore and it becomes a business.

  106. frankie says:

I love it how everyone in this entire post is talking like a million dollars is a small amount of money. People act like these ball players won’t be set after they finish playing. There are millions of people around the world who are happy as hell living off of a lot less. A LOT of those people don’t have college degrees either. If there’s something more important to you than money, follow THAT.
