2001 McDondald’s High School All-American Game Was The Worst

T.J. FordT.J. One of the few that made it.

With David Harrison getting some looks before training camps open next week, it got us thinking about how touted the 7-footer was out of high school. Looking back, we checked out the rosters for the 2001 McDonald’s High School All-American Game and were astounded at how few of the players were actually in the League today.

Of the 24 players that took part, only six – Kwame Brown, DeSagana Diop, T.J. Ford, David Lee, Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry – have NBA contracts with Harrison and Julius Hodge looking to be inked any day. It is notable that Josh Childress was in the League before he bounced this summer to play for the Greek club Olympiacos, but let’s be serious. For a game that is supposed to represent the crème de la crème of the high school talent, it appears the 2001 game fell short.

Check the rosters:

East
Carlos Hurt (Louisville-Moore, KY)
Chris Thomas (Indianapolis-Pike, IN)
Maurice Williams (Jackson-Murrah, MS)
Rashaad Carruth (Oak Hill Academy, VA)
Dajuan Wagner (Camden, NJ)
Julius Hodge (Bronx-St. Raymond, NY)
Anthony Richardsonn (Raleigh-Leesville Road, NC)
James White (Hargrave Military Academy, VA)
Kwame Brown (Brunswick-Glynn Academy, GA)
Ousmane Cisse (Montgomery-St. Jude Academy, AL)
DeSagana Diop (Oak Hill Academy, VA)
David Harrison (Brentwood-Brentwood Academy, TN)

West
T.J. Ford (Houston-Willowridge, TX)
Aaron Miles (Portland-Jefferson, OR)
Cedric Bozeman (Santa Ana-Mater Dei, CA)
Daniel Ewing (Houston-Willowridge, TX)
Kelvin Torbert (Flint-Northwestern, MI)
Josh Childress (Lakewood-Mayfair, CA)
Jawad Williams (Lakewood-St. Edward, OH)
David Lee (St. Louis-Chaminade, MO)
Rick Rickert (Duluth-East, MN)
Wayne Simien (Leavenworth, KS)
Tyson Chandler (Compton-Dominquez, CA)
Eddy Curry (South Holland-Thornwood, IL)

Many players who played in this game have flirted with the League but been unable to stick, most notably Dajuan Wagner and James White. But who in your mind should be playing in the League today?

    Carlos Hurt

  2. yo addiktion says:

Maurice Williams is known as Mo Williams now. So that’s another one that made it. I played against him and high school and he was a beast. My senior year (his junior year), we beat them in the MS State Championship game.

    Carlos Hurt

  4. Habitual Line-Stepper says:

rick rickert was a BUM! that buffoon thought he was a one and done talent. carruth could really shoot it. what a disappointing class.

  5. yallallreadyknow says:

    this class is horrific.
aside from tyson & david lee; should any of them even have contracts in the nba right now?

  6. ERIC says:

this game was played at cameron indoor – dajuan wagner was pulling up beyond JJ Reddick range in that game

  7. ERIC says:

    and making them!

  8. Big Sia says:

Flight White was the truth in highschool

  9. J Tok says:

if dajuan didn’t have that career ending whatever he had.. he’d be a solid NBA PG right now. Where is dajuan right now?

  10. Kobeef says:

    @Jtok
Dajuan has chrones disease…or something like that. It is not something you would wish on your worst enemy. The guy is lucky he has a normal life let alone be an athlete.

Who is going to sign Harrisson? THe guy can play when he wants to…problem is he really doesn’t care.

  11. Jim says:

Wayne Simien, but I think he will make a team this year anyway.

  12. Desha Rashad says:

Rashaad Carruth & Dajuan Wagner crazy buckets.

one had a horrible attitude the other got sick…

    too bad

  13. spindlest says:

Didn’t Ousmane Cisse average a triple double (points, rebs, blocks) in high school before he tore his ACL and never fully recovered? Those numbers are pretty beastly though.

  14. Bondzai007 says:

The West squad had some bigs. Unfortunately Rickert is a bad version of Chris Kaman, and Eddy Curry is averaging a triple double on the McDonald’s value menu.

  15. MoxWestCoastRep says:

    Julius was sick in college!
David Harrisson was awesome on the real world. That’s about it .

  16. JDig89 says:

Wagner had colitis. Not chrones disease he was playing poland and was on the warriors summer league team last year and tore it, supposedly if it wasnt for a bad attitude they would of offered a contract. either way, dont be surprised to see him make a comeback, and try to play in the L

  17. JDig89 says:

tore it up* in the summer league.. my B!

  18. AP007 says:

allan houstons back on the knickz

  19. T Dubbs says:

    Chandler is from Compton, wtf…

  20. Austin Burton says:

Chandler’s actually from a farm town in Cali, but moved closer to Compton so he could play for Dominguez in high school.

  21. Drink the Haterade (KB24 Chip 09) says:

Actually Chandler is from right outside San Bernardino, Ca which is like 70 miles from Compton

  22. Drink the Haterade (KB24 Chip 09) says:

And it’s not a farm town

  23. Farouq Obama aka Fux says:

Let me tell a quick anecdote…..So My junior of High School we are set to play Dominguez and in walks Tyshaun Prince and some one on my team, says “Yo thats the Kid thats going Pro” and my team is like “DAMN SHAQ IS GOING TO BE MASHING ON HIM” and I am like “HELL Naw that aint him thats Prince he has a brother who plays for Pepperdine” then a few minutes later Chandler walks in in street clothes (he didnt play) and I tell my team “Thats the CHandler kid” …my homie then says “SHAQ IS STILL BANGING ON THAT KID” and i was like “dude is a freshman no way he goes to college”. Sure enough three years later he went pro. But the thing I remember most about Dominguez high was the year before they had Kenny Brunner and he terrorized people on defense …… Who remembers the PG from Providence named Linehan?? damn got the fucking guy play D

  24. T Dubbs says:

That’s crazy… I knew Tayshaun balled there, but didn’t know Chandler did.

  25. Drink the Haterade (KB24 Chip 09) says:

@ EVERYONE Actually Chandler is from right outside San Bernardino, Ca which is like 70 miles from Compton

  26. Mark says:

In my opinion, David Lee has been the best of that depressing bunch.

Roy Tarpley should be (or should have been) in the NBA. Well, minus the whole drug thing.

  27. Jeffrey says:

only tj ford, tyson chandler, eddy curry and david should be playing right now

  28. Bone says:

2005 was just as bad if not worse…

    East
    Andrew Bynum
    Lou Williams
    Greg Paulus
    Tasmin Mitchell
    Josh McRoberts
    Richard Hendrix
    Gerald Green
    Danny Green
    Eric Devendorf
    Brandon Costner
    Eric Botang
    Korvotney Barber

    West
    Monta Ellis
    Tyler Hansborough
    Mario Chalmers
    Martell Webster
    CJ Miles
    Julian Wright
    Jon Brockman
    Michah Downs
    Byron Eaton
    Bobby Frasor
    Amir Johnson
    Luke Zeller

I guess the arguement you could make is the top two in this class (Bynum and Ellis) are better than the top two in 2001 (Chandler and Lee?) but other than that, I see a big pile of scrubs on both sides.

  29. solomon says:

bynum and ellis… both are still in the “prove it” stage…

big scrubs? not really – this bunch has solid roleplayers – webs, mario weed, cj, julian, upside amir, gerald the dunker, lou williams… j-mac (he’d be used in bird town)… monster t will be a solid pro… and there’s greg paulus LMAO…

  30. Al says:

Tyson didn’t even show up for the game , he didn’t want to hurt his draft stock

  31. dukelover says:

DANIEL EWING sorry i kno i’ll catch some heat for this but hey ima huge duke fan!

  32. dukelover says:

DANIEL EWING sorry i kno i’ll catch some heat for this but hey ima huge duke fan!

  33. JC says:

i think its more about how many of them became a worthwhile COLLEGE player versus league guys. I’m sure a decent amount of those teams over the years flirted with the league. Or if that’s not sensible (b/c this was clearly in the “HS hype” era, as opposed to the “euro hype” era that got Skita drafted), what about how much professional success they’ve had… jeez not everyone has to make it to “The Show” to get paid

  34. Rob says:

Kelvin Torbert was tearing it up 2 seasons ago overhere in Bree, Belgium. Shooting the lights out & dunking on anybody getting in front of him. Played good in Euroleague too. Got him a transfer. Alson saw some other players (Quinten Ross,…) go back to the NBA after playing pro ball in Belgium and Torbert did better then any of overhere. Just signed a new deal for next season with Mons (Belgium)

  35. VaSlim says:

Anybody remember Jonathan Hargett? Dude was one of best PG in this class, maybe the best. Hedidnt make the M.A.G tho, should have. Dude was The Truth! He faded out shortly after gettin kicked off WVU for alledgedly taking money from an agent. Would have been on that ’05 WVU elite 8 squad. Another case of wasted talent.

  36. Saku 39 says:

1998 was a bad year. I think Tayshaun is the best from the class and the player of the year (Ronald Curry) is a wide receiver in the NFL.

  37. JDig89 says:

01 is alot worse then 05. 05 has 11 pro players. and half are still in senior year of college this year. so theres not really much of a comparison.

  38. JDig89 says:

DIME… now that you’ve done the worst game. what was the best game?

  39. Junior Freeman says:

    Calos Hurt
    Was the truth in Highschool.
He could shoot from anywhere on the court and was a crafty lefty PG.
    SHould be in the League.
If TJ and JohnLucas made it in Carlos should be a all-start in the league. The way he used to bust their asses at Elsik high in Hostuon, TX
