Amare Stoudemire Is In the Best Shape Of His Life

Amare Stoudemire‘s decision to leave Team USA this summer and strand the team with one legit center worked out in the end. Chris Bosh came on, showing everyone across the world – including Toronto management – that he doesn’t need to take off-balance fadeaway jumpers to be effective. And it worked out for Amare too. He’s in flat-out ridiculous shape, and he’s finally 100%.

“I’m at 2 percent body fat and 245 pounds and my (knees) … I feel like I can do anything I want on the court again,” he said. “That’s a great feeling, and if I needed to make the decision for the long-term goal of having a long career, the Olympics will hopefully be there down the road.”

Let’s put that in perspective. Karl Malone, who was called “the strongest and best conditioned basketball player on the planet,” by the Sporting News, weighed in at five-percent body fat and 265 lbs. It’s tough to imagine anyone being more jacked than Malone was.

With the Terry Porter era dawning in Phoenix, Amare will have some other guys on the floor who will pitch in on the defensive end. And, with Shaq and Robin Lopez now around for 82 games, some of the wear and tear that Amare endures over the course over a full season will be alleviated.

“For a team that’s looking to achieve greater things, this was a great group of additions. We have a lot of talent, and Terry Porter’s method has us all uplifted and ready to move forward.”

Ummm, when has Shaq played an 82 game season? Hell, when was the last time Shaq played in 65 games?

  2. GEE...and now she's sniffin again.. says:

Yea I feel the Suns gonna make some noise. I like Stat, outside of throwing his old coach under the bus. I hope he does well and really comes with it. Just not against Houston lol.

Wow 2% body fat, that is crazy!

  3. GEE...and now she's sniffin again.. says:

Yea the real question is what kinda shape is Shaq going to show up in lol?

I seeeeeeeeeeriously doubt it will be 2% body fat. Prolly 200% lol.

  4. Kobeef says:

Amare pre-knee injury was one of the most ridiculously dominant players to ever play in the NBA.

He absolutely destroyed Tim Duncan in the playoffs and was dominanting KG, Shaq and co. I remember one play where he led a BREAK AWAY went behind his backed at the FT line and finished with a massive dunk. It was stunning.

The Suns games will be must see tv if he is back to that form.

  5. Celts Fan says:

Ya Kobeef, and that was when he had Dwight Howard range (anything other than a dunk was out of it.) Now, he’s developed a jumper too. Could be DOMINANT, and all it cost him was a gold medal. I think he’ll come to regret it over time since this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be on a team like that with so much more than just Olympic gold on the line (we proved again that we OWN this game,) but it’s not my knee…

  6. Smitty313 says:

Before Stat got injured he was a beast (still is just in a different way). He was super quick and jumped extremely high. He demolished Tim Duncan some years back in the playoffs.

  7. Coop says:

    If he’s 2% body fat I’m a chicken Mcnugget. I could believe 5 or 6% but 2%? Don’t think so.

  8. timmy says:

hey dime, does that mean he’s going to play some defence?

  9. Dagomar says:

    2% body fat is not even human . . . .

  10. rob stewart says:

I’m a vegetarian (I do eat fish though) and I work out like 4 days a week. I’m 11% body fat and people think that’s pretty low. How in the heck does one get to be 2% body fat? That seems/sounds impossible. Is that even healthy?

  11. Coop says:

no it’s not- i mean, he IS lean anyone can see that but tbh i think he’s just got his numbers wrong. Even marathon runners don’t go that low, though it’s close.

  12. smity far away says:

i agree with Coop. he probably got the numbers wrong…and if he didnt then we (people who like to think of ourselves as “in shape”) need to step our game up.

  13. Coop says:

haha no 2% isn’t a desirable goal. I’m lift weights 5 times per week, i box, i run, and i eat like a bit of a chimp and im 14%. 10% at pretty much any normal height and weight is lean and less than 8% is something only elite athletes need to be at, if at all. if Stat is 2% then a) he wont be bullying anyone down low and b) Phx needs a new medical guy.

  14. iain. says:

Bodybuilders usually aim to compete at a body fat percentage of around 4%. To do this they use a number of specific techniques and as soon as the contest is over the percentage will rise. If it stays this low for any period of time, it can be very dangerous and bodybuilders have died from trying to keep their body fat % at 4 or even under. I just can’t see Amare being at 2%, in fact I hope he isn’t, because if its true he has some real bad advisors. Just can’t see it being right though.

  16. Cass says:

We were one a commercial set with Amare about a month ago, and while the dude definitely looked skinny as hell, he didn’t look like he was about to die or anything.

    - PC

  17. A-Slam says:

hey coop thats the dumbest fucking thing i’ve ever heard, no one needs fat to be dominant you worthless piece of shit, that’s all muscle amare has, so take your boxing and weightlifting and shove it up your big-ego’d ass

  18. Dime Magazine says:

iain is dead on – 2% body fat is either impossible or incredibly unhealthy. I remember when Malone was a legit 5% body fat and reports came out that he was having complications with his health because he was too lean.

    - AK

  19. JCarr says:

Well, Marcus Williams should think about making a new friend in Amare!!! Marcus Williams always has weight issues even though he’s never had a serious injury. His excuses about not getting playing time are absurd. Amare had an injury in which few players come back from or at least at the same level they were before.

    Amare is MVP this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Coop says:

to be fair, bodybuilders are ridding themselves of more water through diuretics anyway and obv they’re bigger than Stat, but yeah it’s a valid point. Stat is no Stephen Hawking is he, lets face it.

  21. P_Dizzle says:

Yeah the 2% is a little sketchy. I don’t know if I am believing that.

Before everyone crowns Amare the MVP and best Center / PF to ever play the game, let’s remember how his D needs a lot of work.

He also needs a better post up game ’cause he is going to lose some of that explosiveness after a few more years on that knee. Right now his post up game is fake the man and then dunk the ball.

STAT is a beast but I ain’t crowning him anything yet.

  22. Coop says:

actually A-Slam, I was inferring that being 2% body fat is not ‘peak’ for a guy playing basketball, or anyone really. If you knew anything about physiology in sport you might know that. And I never said he should be more like Eddy Curry, merely fatTER. i would elucidate but being as you’re clearly a 12 year old of limited education I shan’t bother.

  23. Damon says:

wasn’t malone at 3.8% in 97-98? thats what they said on the german broadcast back then.
and i read some weeks ago that john stockton had 4%.

  24. dukesman2000 says:

    heard that before

  25. Gerard says:

smh at those of y’all thinking Amare “dominated” Duncan. That’s what Pop does every playoff series, he let’s one guy go off and has the rest of the opposition standing around watching. If you think Duncan got demolished by Amare you need to check the fingers (for rings).

  26. that's whats up says:

he may drink 2% milk, but he ain’t 2% body fat. He would be dead.

…and the best shape of your life don’t mean shit if you can’t play D or hit free throws.

  27. Shujen says:

2% is like removing your lips and earlobes.

  28. isotope says:

lol @ Gerard. Good point. Great post.

  29. GEE...and now she's sniffin again.. says:

Very possible. In my former life as a body builder. My personal trainer would often suggest that my body fat be between 4-2% for contest time.

Ok on the real I got that off the web that trainers do that, so yea 2% is most def. possible with no immediate consequences but I don’t know if staying at that percentage over a long period of time would be healthy.

  30. jimmhumm says:

2% body fat? Whats shaq at 25% body fat. STAT better be in shape his team is old as heck. 34 years average makes the Suns sound more like the Spurs.

  31. Brock says:

I don’t understand why they always seem to have rediculous bodyfat numbers for NBA players. I remember an old game where they were highlighting some of Shaq’s numbers stating that he was 6% bodyfat, but he had no definition at all. Shaq’s never been 6% in his life.

  32. BALLZ says:

At two percent body fat one’s body would begin cannibalizing itself. 5-8% is phenomemal, 3-4% world-class bodybuilder. For women, anything under 10% makes them stop menstrating, so A-Slam make sure you stay over that.

  33. bsteezy3 says:

Trouble for the rest of the league…

  34. DeGuy says:

    @ rob stewart

if you eat fish you are NOT a vegetarian. or have fish suddenly turned into vegetables??

and never ever is at 2% bf. nba players like to exaggerate.

    yeah, i’m 7’8, 420 pounds and .5% bf

  35. dapro says:

I’m sure he’s in damn good shape physically but if his commitment to defense and playing within the offense hasn’t changes then it means nothing

  36. Coop says:

    hahaha good stuff Ballz.

  37. Stepper says:

    @ Coop
“Stat is no Stephen Hawking is he, lets face it” , neither are you my friend.

  38. Stepper says:

It’s just the usual garbage, players inflate their measurements all the time, two or three inches in hight a few less/extra pounds.

  39. GEE...and now she's sniffin again.. says:

Ballz got to have comment of the day lol.

  40. A-Slam says:

im suprised ballz knows all that shit, what other useless information does he have in his book? By the way Karl Malone had like 5% body fat and weighed 265, and you know his career sucked right? I mean he just played 19 seasons right? and he played like almost all 82 games per season right? and he totally wasn’t the second all-time leading scorer right? yeah his career totally stunk

  41. A-Slam says:

I’m tired of all you fuckers hatin on Amare, yeah his D stinks but how many other F/C can give you 25 a night anymore let alone a reliable Jumper for that? Not to mention an 80% free throw percentage

  42. lee says:

May be they told stat he was 2% of shaq’s body fat !!!

  43. Funky says:

    B.S

Nobody in the NBA is even close to 2 % bodyfat. Hell, the only bodybuilder who approached that number died (Andreas Munzer)because of it.

Neither was Malone even near 5 % even if he was in fantastic shape. Maybe 9 % and I am generous.

The human body works best between 10 and 15 percent as a general rule. But in discipline that require explosivity maybe more like 8 to 10 % (world class sprinters style).

  44. that's whats up says:

if the body works best at 10-15% I’m doing twice as good hovering around 30%

  45. bigdoggchad says:

I remember reading somewhere the answer was at 3 or 4% so no way STAT is at 2%.

  46. Coop says:

Credit where it is due, Dime. You changed the wording of the ‘poll’. Thank you.

  47. P_Dizzle says:

According to this website Malone was at 4.8% body fat:

    http://www.coachmarian.de/Spezials/Workouts/MaloneWorkoutSecrets.htm

  48. P_Dizzle says:

This website says that Stockton had 4% body fat in #37. I doubt his was lower than Malone’s:

    http://members.tripod.com/johnstockton0/fortyreasons.html

So Amare is saying that he has 4.9 lbs of fat? hmmm……

  49. Ian says:

    gerard
u r so fuking right amare going of was by design its pops strategy and to kobeef it works every season let amare get his and the spurs beat the suns easy btw duncan does destroy amare everytime
amare cant even stay out of foul trouble playin td

now on the malone thing i always thought david robinson was the best conditioned athlete in the nba i read somewhere a long time ago he has less than 4% and we all remember the body he had

  50. Ian says:

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba/2002-10-28-vets-workouts_x.htm

    robinson malone and stockton

  51. GEE...and now she's sniffin again.. says:

LOL congrats Dime I have never seen or been a part of such a discussion on body fat lol.

    How bout booty fat?!?!

Anybody out there bigger than Buffy or it’s another chica named Scarlet that is fiya too.

  52. parinaz suns says:

amares goin to be even better this year as great of a coach as dantoni was he couldve used him better in the playoffs last year. he didnt give stat enough touches and instead gave them to diaw who had the series ending turnover for the suns .look at how his number went up when shaq came in. granted suns will be lucky if shaq plays half the games this season, regardless stat will be a beast and will actually play better defense with a coach who actually has heard of the word defense unlike dantoni. go suns

  53. snook says:

too bad being in that great a shape wont improve Defense…

    oh wait it will…

    oh wait it’s Amare

  54. QuEsT???? says:

hell im 100 % fat and im all good i play

  55. Jorisc says:

    Yeah and I’m at -2%.

What a jackass if he really said it…

  56. peace-up says:

YO AMARE IS MY BOY HE BE THE GOAT THAT RIGHT STAT ALL THE WAY IF ANYONE CAN DO 2% ITS STAT THE GREATEST
