Andrew Bynum or Greg Oden? You Choose
photo by MannionAndrew Bynum updated his blog to let fans know how his rehab from knee surgery is going:
For the past six weeks I’ve been here in Atlanta preparing for the upcoming season. The first couple of weeks were really to get my wind back and strengthen my leg. Wow was I out of shape, but fortunately it came back pretty fast. I have my mile run back down in the low sixes, I’m playing way above the rime, dunking the ball like crazy, and my leg is 100% pain free with no swelling. My trainer, Dr. Sean Zarzana, has me doing all types of workouts from track, strength, balance, basketball, stretching and yoga. All of the routines are extremely challenging, but I can feel my body returning to the form from. We will be returning to LA in the next few days to continue these workouts, and I am really looking forward to practicing with the coaching staff and all of my teammates as well. This week Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss stopped in for a visit. They watched me go through an upper body/track workout.
That got me to thinking – who is going to have more of an impact this season, Bynum or Greg Oden? You guys might be familiar with my skepticism of Oden and of what he’ll be able to do in the NBA in the immediate future (prime examples HERE and HERE). Truth be told though, I’m pretty skeptical of what Bynum will be able to contribute as well.
Last season we got a great glimpse into what Bynum could be some day. His game is clearly still so raw, but the tools of greatness are there – 7-feet tall, strong, athletic, blocks shots, has some touch and shows good footwork. It seems like one of the biggest things holding him back has been confidence. You could see in games early last season before the injury that Bynum was learning on the fly; there were actually times last year when you could see him realizing that not only he could play in the League, but also that he could physically dominate an NBA game.
But confidence is also what makes me unsure of how Bynum, and Oden for that matter, will bounce back this season. Any athlete who has ever suffered a major injury, especially one involving a knee, knows that a HUGE part of the rehab process is rebuilding the confidence to go full bore on the court. How will they handle the rigors of camp and getting themselves into “NBA” shape? How will they react the first time they get tangled up under the boards or land awkwardly? How each one of these guys reacts to these little obstacles will dictate their respective paths, and their teams’ paths, this season.
So here’s the question for you: Who will have a better season, Bynum or Oden? And who would you rather have on your team?

Oden by far. He’s not only a better physical specimen, he’s got a better all around supporting cast.

Bynum of course on the fact that he is far better looking and has already experienced success at the NBA Level. Plus Microfracture surgery is more drastic and hard to come back from.

i see bynum havin a better season cuz he won’t be required to do much. lakers got to the finals w/o him. oden is a much bigger cornerstone to the blazers success

personally, it would depend on who i had anchoring the perimeter. if i had guys who dont play solid d, i’d wanna roll w/ greg. if my wing guys were fairly solid or at least TRIED to play some defense, then i’d be a little more open to ‘drew. greg’s a BEAST and bynum did take it right back to shaq a few years back, soo…..it’s closer than some might think. i like greg better tho so i’d pick him. besides, he’s already developed his left hand anyway. lol

Bynum because I’m not sold on Odon yet. Even watching him at Ohio State wasn’t that impressive. Bynum on the other hand has grown alot over the last year, even though his injury was a setback on his development. I think in the log run, Bynum will be a better franchise player than Odon. Playing in Portland is a disease anyways…
September 4th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
fallinup says:
Oden went to the NCAA championship with a bandaged hand. He’s been scolded for playing pick up games while in rehab. So I don’t thing conditioning will be too big of a factor for Oden. Bynum on the the other hand, came into the league as a portly teenager with unproven potential. Don’t get me wrong, he was a pleasant surprise for that half of a season…but I doubt that he will be in prime shape come the start of the season.
Portland to me is a better all around team than LA. Which in turn will make Oden’s job a little easier. He can still be the #2 or #3 scorer on the team and lead in the Rebs and Blks, PLUS Aldridge is there to make it even more easier for Oden to fill that roll…
Bynum, will not be coming back to the Lakers as the #2 scoring option. Pau will be. And pau isn’t exactly known as a hustler and rebounder…so Bynum is going to be working a little more to fill that roll.
On who’s gonna have a better season? As long as both stay healthy, my money on Oden.
September 4th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
ERIC says:
as it has been said – microfracture surgery (ODEN) is much harder to rehab and recover than a regular knee surgery (BYNUM). Given that Bynum has already played through a few NBA seasons and started to establish himself last season, he will have a better 2008-2009 season, and the Lakers will be better than the Blazers as well (clearly).
For the future, while Bynum is more skilled around the basket offensively and did average 13ppg, 10 rpg and 2bpg. He should eventually become a 20/12/2 player.
Oden is expected to be a dominant defensive beast and should average 15/15/4 in a few years.
Just my .02.

this is a little unfair for oden right? he’s a rookie recovering from a more difficult injury; i’d take him over beasley in a match between rookies. bynum should just be asked to be eased into the rotation, and i’d think by the time it matters (playoffs), bynum will be ready to contribute and make a difference.

u hilarious, dude. I thought u were serious for a minute. Portland’s a better team cuz Lamarcus -the new Sheed in that he rather do his work on the perimeter – “will be doing a good number of the grunt work than Pau Gasol will for L.A.”? That’s funny. LA’s numbers from last season were 17.8 and 7.6 with 1.6 assists while PG put up 18.9, 8.4 with 3. 2 assists. Please tell me who in Portland’s front court can pass and distribute better than LO and Pau.
In regards to Bynum vs the Rook, i’m just gonna repost from:

It’s once again comedy that the same heads that are bashin on Bynum as overhyped and overrated are the same dudes all giddy about Oden who hasn’t even had a healthy game. Yeah, AB averaged 13, 10, and 2 for half a season and obviously the Lakers coulda used him in the Finals. I’m gonna state this again but the haters’ll see what they wanna:
AB is 20 YEARS OLD. Oden is 20 YEARS OLD.
One guy has 3 years NBA experience and has shown that he can be a force on both ends when healthy, but Portland’s got a dynasty? It looks good on paper, but I seen what my squad can do on the court and Bynum still ain’t never played with Pau. We still got Kobe, Sasha and Farmar got some valuable playoff experience last season and we got the best team out west. Keep talkin about dynasties on paper and how chips are bein made right now for other teams, but you still gotta take out the Lakers. The road to the championship WILL go thru LA”

I remember a game last year where Bynum shut down Amare and score something like 25 points against him. Amare looked helpless on the floor against Bynum. To me that was Bynum’s breakthrough game and put to rest all the “soft and unskilled” talk you hear. Amare is without a doubt one of the most skilled big-men in the game and while he doesn’t play much D he isn’t soft. He is a monster in his own right.
All that to say that if Bynum is as motivated (Kobe will make sure of that) and fit as he claims to be he will easily overpower the rookie. Also keep in mind that Bynum has a bigger frame than Oden (2″ longer wingspan and 2″ taller).
Oden will still be very raw in 2009.

This is not close right now cuz oden hasn’t played in the league yet. When he plays then you can ask this question. As far as drew I think he has shown his potential and this is his 3rd year. Greg is gonna have 2 take awhile 2 get his groove and if you think about it he has “high bust” written all over him cuz of all the hype and hasn’t played yet. Also remember how he stuggled in the summer league play. I think he averaged like 10 fouls not a good sign

People that kept saying Bynum never watched Oden play. He’s the dude who shot 70% from the line LEFT HANDED, his off hand. Both are still raw in terms of offense, but I give the advantage to Oden because he can go and use both of his hands effectively. On defense it’s Oden by far. Oden has the natural talent on D. Bynum avged what 13 and 10? Most people thought that Oden’s rookie year would have been in that range. Oden would have been the 1st pick if he came out of his junior year in high school. enough said

When was the last time you heard about a Blazer being on the police blotter? 3 or 4 years ago maybe? KP has absolutely cleared the roster of all remnants of the “jail blazers”. fallinup says:
dizzle…thanks for the grave dig but you missed the important question up top. Who will have the better season, Bynum or Oden? I’m saying Oden will because he’s gonna have an easier job and still be a major factor. Bynum will not be as much of a focal point in LA as he was BEFORE Pau got there. So he will have to work harder to get the points that he had to get last year…because he was the only legit big man they had. Flashing stats on a team that had Bynum for half a season is futile…BECAUSE THEY ONLY HAD BYNUM FOR HALF A DAMN SEASON!!!
So why not, lemme know how big of a monster Bynum is when he plays a game with Pau Gasol eating up touches alongside him.
You think Aldridge is going to be eating up Oden’s touches in Portland???? Are you saying that Roy, Blake, and Rush will distribute the ball less than Fish and Sasha, or Kobe for that matter??

As far as Bynum and Oden. On my squad I think I would roll with Bynum just because Oden seems way more breakable than Bynum. Plus I just feel there is more of an up-swing with Bynum. I have no real justification outside of feeling. Perhaps it’s how old Oden looks, that just throws me lol.
Anyway for a bigger season, I think Oden will have that. Bynum still should deliver nice numbers probably slightly below.
I think Oden wants it more though due to not having played a day in the L. so he has more expectations and people will be really scrutinizing his game more than Bynum’s.
Defensively a beast, provided he learns how to stay out of foul trouble early and offensively he should be able to get his Dwight on and dunk most everything. I think Oden will have the better season.

Bynum likely will be better player than Oden this season because of question regarding Oden’s full recovery–and ability to stay healthy (and Bynum’s experience). (I think we may be looking at Bowie II in Portland.) When will Oden ever be fully healthy?
Nevertheless, Oden likely will have more of an impact with Portland because Bynum will have to share time a bit with Pau. Question is what happens in Portland to Joel Pryz? He is a whopper who could really help some team out if healthy and if Portland doesn’t need him.

so disregardin what we sayin about Bynum havin a solid half season and GO havin no pro experience and all things being equal:
we got 2 twenty year old 7 footers comin off a kneecap injury and a microfracture surgery. One has 3 years experience on a squad that went to the finals and the other has summer league experience with the youngest squad in the L. You discussin AB losin touches, but you missin the point that Lakers don’t need AB to score. Like the Celts showed, you need 3 scorers, solid role players and everybody “tryin” to d up. What we need from AB is reboundin, shot blockin and defense. We got 81, Pau, LO, Fish and a solid bench. We need AB to do what Chandler does for NO. Board, swat, d up and once in a while, go to the tin and grab an oop.
I know you a Blazer die-hard, but I ain’t takin B-Roy over Kobe, I ain’t takin Aldridge over Pau, I ain’t takin any of your points over Fish/Farmar cuz I don’t think they can shoot as well as mine.(Maybe Bayless but he’s a volume shooter so good luck gettin up shots with Portland’s overcrowded backcourt)I def’nitely ain’t takin Webster/Outlaw over Lamar/Ariza and I’m gonna have to say I’d take AB over GO as far as who’ll have a better season doin what they team needs.
I’m gettin off the soapbox now.
We’ll see once the season rolls around

Even further back, the clips with dmiles/qrich/olowokandi. the suns with marion/marbury/penny, the bucks with ray allen/cassell/glen robinson/tim thomas. I’m gonna’ say…
…Andrew Bynum. Here’s why. He was on a roll before he went down with the injury and knows what to expect of the NBA now…as well as what he’s capable of. Also, he’s being welcomed back to the team that made it to the Finals WITHOUT him…the same that many said would have won had he been there. That’s a confidence builder, right there.
Greg Oden has shined on the NCAA level but he’s yet to play an NBA game. He’ll most assuredly be a “beast” I believe, but I think that Andrew Bynum has the better year this year (less of a learning curve).

They are led by a player who is going into his 3rd season and is already an all star. Last but not least, they are adding the best international player not yet in the NBA.

@ justice – You have to be kidding right? Hibbert isn’t in Oden’s class as an athlete. There is a reason Oden was picked #1 and Hibbert was picked #17, well there are many reasons, but first and foremost was that Oden is an athletic SUPERFREAK!
via Chad Ford after the NBA draft combine in 2007 – “The big winner here seems to be Greg Oden, who tested off the charts in agility and speed for a big man. He didn’t take the bench press test because of concerns about his wrist. But if he had he may have been in the Top 10 for best athletes in the draft. That’s huge for a center”

And as far as comparing Oden to Bynum, you’re kidding, right? The surgery is a NON-ISSUE since he has already demonstrated that he is 100% recovered – it’s a history point, not anything relevant. Oden will KILL By-none in this league.

Any of you guys who are serious about Bynum over Oden, be honest…if the draft were held today and both those guys were available for you to pick, would you honestly (no homers please) take Bynum over Oden? If you said “yes”, and said it with a straight face, you might want to get your heads examined. Oden is stronger, faster, bigger, has a bigger span, is more naturally athletic (Oden has been clocked in tests faster than many of the guards that participated – he’s not anything like the NBA has seen). Defensively Bynum will never be close. Offesively Oden will still take him down. Bynum (along with every other center in the NBA) cannot stop him because he’s just too strong.

I’m a diehard Laker fan, always have been, but I think most Laker fans are overestimating Bynum’s ability. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s good, possibly an All-Star down the road, but to think LA is automatically gonna win the title, or even the West, is blindly optomistic.
The average fan has no idea what Oden’s real skill level is. He was hyped outta HS, injured at Ohio State, injured in the NBA. Based on what people have been saying, Oden “should” be better, and probably has a higher ceiling. I wouldn’t be surprised if Oden ends up better, but I say Bynum has a better year in ‘08-09.
