Channing Frye Out 8-10 Weeks

Channing FryeFrye is out ’til mid Nov

Channing Frye had to get bone spurs removed from his left ankle yesterday, removing him from the Blazers’ plans for at least the first two weeks of the season. Though Fry’es 8-10 weeks out of action won’t kill the Blazers’ depth chart, it’s a serious blow for Frye, who was supposedly in the best shape of his life after spending the entirety of his summer getting the full monty from Greg Oden in Portland’s practice facility.

A big man who can shoot, Frye was expected to enter training camp as the backup power forward to LaMarcus Aldridge, a valuable piece to a second unit that expects to spread the floor and play uptempo. Frye spent much of the summer trimming his frame and working on his three-point shooting.

Though the Blazers won’t be able to spell Aldridge with another jumpshooting big, they have a legit backup option thanks to their sharp off-season trade with the Pacers. The deal that sent Jarrett Jack, Josh McRoberts, and the rights to Brandon Rush to Indiana in exchange for the rights to Jerryd Bayless and Ike Diogu has already paid off. First, Bayless killed it in the summer league. And now, Diogu will be needed to step in on day one.

In the four games that he saw 20 or more minutes last year, Diogu tallied 13.3 points and 6.8 boards. Here’s your chance, Mr. Diogu.

bone spurs from his ankle? or splinters from his ass? why doesn’t channing small frye work on some rebounding?

i really like portland’s squad right now! they’re stacked with talent. and they’re YOUNG. some teams only have a solid core to work around with only 2 or 3 players (my kings…and our core isn’t even that solid), but the blazers are looking pretty good for the foreseeable future. all that weed smoke finally blew outta the building! lol

  5. Meica says:

That’s a damn shame. I’ve always been impressed with Frye’s play and it seems like he’ll get a chance to shine this year. Oh well. Hadoken’s right though, couldn’t he have worked on his rebounding?

Regardless of Channing’s injury, this Blazer squad has big time things in their future. The organization has done a damn good job of being patient, getting the right guys in, and shipping out cancers…(Darius Miles, Zach Randolf, Steve Francis, Sebastian Tellfair). They have gone the route of developing players instead of trading for Vets with a “one year wonder” plan in mind. While that worked for the Celts, this plan seems to be in line to work just as well. Shows what happens when a team is dedicated to their players, drafts good quality characters, and has the patience to put up with mistakes.

  7. GEE...new finishing move...the slap you silly says:

Man this just brings to mind how you can have the bomb squad and it can be gone like that because of injuries. Hate it for dude, and anyone, but at least its only weeks out and the starters are still cool.

  8. Dave says:

It’s an opportunity for Diogu but I think Travis Outlaw will take the minutes, with Portland continuing their quality small ball lineups.
