Chris Rock’s New HBO Special “Kill the Messenger”
Chris Rock’s new HBO SpecialWhen other families were playing Raffi for their kids, I was sitting in the back of my mom’s station wagon listening to Chris Rock‘s Rock This on the Taurus tape deck, laughing hysterically along with the rest of my family. And now, when other people plug in headphones on the train and bump to their favorite tunes, I usually scroll through my iPod and listen to another one of Chris Rock’s acts, usually Born Suspect.
So when I saw an ad for his new HBO special “Kill the Messenger” on the subway, I went out and got tickets to see him at the legendary Apollo Theater, one of the shows that they were taping for HBO along with performances in South Africa and London. Legitimately, it’s as good as anything he’s ever done. I won’t spoil any of his jokes – but he kills it talking a little bit of Obama/McCain, the difference between jobs and careers, and how it’s all about the context in which you say something.
To get you ready for this weekend, check out some of his best work HERE.

I’ve never listened to his audio tapes/cds, but Bigger & Blacker is by far my favourite stand-up routine of all-time.
Can’t wait to get this on DVD.

I like Dave Chappelle. His stand up at the Filmore in San Francisco was hillarious. If you haven’t seen it…rent it….worth the watch

For some reason, Chris Rock does great stand-up comedy, but every single one of his movies suck bad. I mean BAD. I can’t think of a single movie of his that’s been enjoyable. He’s had some decent small roles in some, but when he plays the main star, Jesus Christ they suck bad.

Kudabeen says:
His movie suck, because he delivers his punchlines as if he was on stage. It’s just a horrible mix. Everyone else is acting and the movie is trying to flow, then Chris Rock takes a moment to setup a joke and then drive home the punchline… Just doesn’t work…He needs acting lessons or something. He needs to holler at Adam Sandler or Eddie Murphy…

“I Think I Love My Wife” was pretty good. “Head of State” wasn’t terrible (thanks in part to Bernie Mac), but “Down to Earth” would have been unwatchable if I didn’t like Regina King.

Definitely excited about this special. Bad Company was a really good movie IMO. Chris Rock isn’t the greatest actor ever, but he played his part and worked well with Anthony Hopkins.
