Josh Howard is talking reckless, previewing the Cavs, and what if Portland re-signed JR Rider?

Josh HowardJosh Howard (photo. Monte Isom)

Was it a good thing or a bad thing that Josh Howard’s ‘hood interpretation of Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf happened during the NBA’s slow period? On one hand, the September 2008 award-winner for Bad Press In Sports could easily be overshadowed by the MLB postseason races and the NFL. On the other hand, if this is all that’s going on NBA-wise (and during an election year on top of that, when everyone’s feeling extra patriotic), it could become a huge story. So far Howard’s comments haven’t made a huge ripple in the mainstream press, no where near what happened 12 years ago surrounding Abdul-Rauf. If you haven’t seen the controversial video in question, click HERE … Forgive Knicks fans if they’re not too worried about Josh Howard and more concerned with the status of Danilo Gallinari. Reports out of Italy say the rookie’s back problems — which ended his summer-league stint after just one game — still haven’t healed all the way. Maybe it’s nothing too serious, but back injuries are always something to worry about long-term. Just ask Rockets’ fans how they feel whenever T-Mac appears to be grimacing or moves his hand toward his spine … Is this the year that Danny Ferry and Co. have put the right pieces around LeBron to make a serious play at a championship? Not quite, and we all know time may be running out for them. Yesterday we previewed the ‘08-09 Cleveland Cavaliers, who could still go as far as the Finals (they do have the best player in the East) or exit in the first round … The Seahawks’ desperate signing of WR Koren Robinson — who was run out of Seattle a few years ago because he kept getting arrested — to help fill their gaping holes at receiver is the NFL equivalent to the Blazers watching Brandon Roy, Jerryd Bayless and Rudy Fernandez each suffer season-ending injuries before Thanksgiving, then bringing back JR Rider to play two-guard … If you’re wondering why the Lakers are even considering signing Jelani McCoy — who’s only 30 years old but suffers from Jamaal Magloire’s Disease that makes him look/play like he’s 39 — when there are plenty of younger centers out there who are most likely better, it’s simple: McCoy is a vet, and once you’re in the League, GM’s know your name, and you’ve proven to be a harmless practice player who won’t rock the boat, you have the advantage over a kid who’s something of an unknown … Speaking of unknowns, Pistons coach Michael Curry said rookie Walter Sharpe (UAB) will probably spend more time with the big league squad than in the D-League. In other words, Sharpe isn’t getting ANY burn this year. Meanwhile, Curry said Rodney Stuckey is going to get starter-type minutes … Of all the new NBA coaches taking over this year, is Curry under more pressure than the rest? He’s the only one whose team would be taking a step backwards if they didn’t make the conference finals in ‘09. If you were running a team, how much time would you give to a coach before you started evaluating his job status? Seems like these days you get about 2-3 years to find the right formula, but after that it’s time to produce W’s or start updating the resume … If there’s a way we can watch the Nuggets layup lines on NBA League Pass, sign us up. Denver just inked rookie Sonny Weems, and the NCAA’s reigning dunk champ will join a roster that includes J.R. Smith, Birdman Andersen, Dahntay Jones and K-Mart. At the very least, Steven Hunter is gonna catch some bad ones during practice all year … Remember Davon Jefferson? He played with O.J. Mayo at USC last year, followed O.J. into the draft as a freshman early entrant, hired an agent immediately, then he wasn’t picked. Jefferson has signed with Maccabi Haifa (Israel), where his teammates include Tamir Goodman (the “Jewish Jordan” who was a high school star in Maryland a few years back) and B.J. McKie, who is still U of South Carolina’s all-time leading scorer and was a BEAST on Coach K College Basketball for Sega Genesis … We’re out like Davon …

i wAs surprised to see that the josh howard incident wasnt on sportcenter……….oh i know its off topic but i hate jason whitlock and his nfl articles, he ties everything to racism, like oh my god “donovan mcnabb just got sacked by a white defensive tackle just because he is black” nooooooooo he got sacked because he held on to the ball too much

  5. QuEsT???? says:

oh and btw im a believer of the nuggets again.. i mean the nugget’s gm is a very intelligent man and he let camby go for nothing, he must have seen something in nene. i believe nene has all star potential but he is always hurt, the positive is that he is still young( i think he is 24) and if he is healthy uve got iverson, smith, melo, kmart, and nene. not too bad and they now they will be the thuggets 2.0 with camby out cuz camby was soft nene isnt they all will get in ur face, its like a fight waiting to happen.

  6. Coop says:

Dime actually going over stories they’ve already covered now haha.

Jason Whitlock goes overboard sometimes with his stuff, but I still think he’s decent. It’s probably hard being a black sports journalist, every time you see things from a black point of view and report it accordingly, you’ve got a million people accusing you of playing the race card.

It’s been awhile since there’s been a great “black” sports columnist. JA Adande is corporate (he used to be better with the LA Times), Scoop Jackson seems like he’s trying too hard, Stu Scott is a joke and doesn’t write articles. The best is probably Fred Wilbon.

My favorite has always been Ralph Wiley. He had such a unique voice and an ability to talk about race issues in such a practical way. A personal hero of mine, it was a sad day when he passed. RIP, Ralph Wiley.

FEDRODOMUS PREDICTS: Walter Sharpe is gonna have his nutz on many a players forehead, Very Very soon. Dude is a beast the Pistons already love the kid. However dude is a Narcolyptic though, Betcha didn’t know that.

  14. Ansonious says:

I’m starting to wonder if all this odd behavior from Josh Howard is a ploy to try to force the mavs to send him somewhere else, if you look at his carefree I don’t give a fu– what I say and/or do attitude you’ve gotta ? what’s his deal, and how long will the Mavs front office allow him to act like a 16 year old girl? @ dime How bout a hot seat article on George Karl? That guy really hasn’t produce shit for them except for a first round exit year in and year out. If anyone deserved to lose their job this past off season it was him through my eyes anyways. I’m out like the Nuggets having a better record than the Clippers peace!

  15. Tyrone says:

Them Blazers had best avoid Rider – at this stage dude’s got no game y’all. I’m athinkin that the Cavs are gonna be rockin’ the East dis year, prolly gettin the #2 seed behind them Celts y’all.

  16. solomon says:

walter sharpe will be roasting his nuts sitting all season long in the farthest regions of the detroit bench… heck, even amir ain’t getting burn, but i think coach curry outta stir things up…

and what’s up wid dat battle rhyme thang? dissing each other aint worth the brain cell, holmes (unless some $$$ in on da line)… conserve it for better use…

we’re out like a jr rider cameo

  17. Celts Fan says:

If I remember right, Koren’s arrests were of the DUI variety and he admitted he’s an alcoholic, cleaned himself up, and has played the last year trouble free and sober. JR’s currently incarcerated for (I believe) stealing cars. That’s a little different. This is like Portland bringing in Vin Baker (who got plenty of 2nd chances.) He wasn’t malicious, just made some mistakes.

  18. solomon says:

vin baker didn’t play for rip city though

  19. Kobeef says:

Some people say Davon Jefferson made a bad decision to come out but without OJ in the mix next year his weak play may have been more exposed. He didn’t get drafted but at least he was on the radar this year. Davon probably realized that this was his best shot. At least USC made the NCAA tourney this year..until they ran into B’easy.

  20. GEE...currently pop locking and then the windmill! says:

Ok so yea ask a T-Mac fan how we feel lol.

NERVOUS AS CRAP! Everytime I see dude grimace like something might be hurt, I am like awwwww hell here goes another 20 games missed!

Back problems ain’t no joke. Wasn’t LeBron having some in the playoffs? Cleveland fans should be a lil concerned.

Josh Howard is a wanna-be hard dude to me. You been in the L for a nice amount of time, with little to no drama. Now all the sudden you coming all out with ish, no less dumb stuff. Dude should go back to what he was, cause what he is ain’t workin! Go play overseas!

Dime nice look on the Sega.
    Seeeegggaaaaaa!

I am thinking with the way games are now (2k8) they are going to run out of things to add. I mean say like in 2010 or 2012 what could they possibly add to the games for real? I don’t know.

Right now I would say they need to add more swagger to the games. Like I know I catch some ill dunks on cats in games and then the player comes down and either runs back or does something weird.

I forget the game but there was one I think where they had the dude point at the person he dunked on. I loved that mess. They need to do more of that, have a player yell, beat the chest, do that Shaq body becomes a slinky deal as you run back. More swagger needed!

  22. raf says:

what happened 12 years ago with Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf?

  23. fallinup says:

    @ raf

He was formerly known as Chris Jackson…and wasn’t a bad PG by any means. He went Muslim, and took on some very “un-american” views…the big hub bub was about his not standing for the National Anthem. Because, in his words, “The flag is a symbol of oppression.”…That didn’t sit right for some folks and he was being constantly boo’d…It pretty much derailed his career, cause who wants to sign a player that most folks hate.

If I do recall as well, he also caught tons of flack for a comment he made right after 9/11. The lynch mobs were out in full force then, so he really caught hell.

The kid was a talent though.

  24. Brown says:

    @ Gee

I think they should allow gamers to pick any team in NBA history and play as them. Then you could pit the best teams from different eras against each other or replay old rivalries.

There’s so much talk between fans and analysts on who the best team of all-time is. This way you could play it out.

Matchup possibilities would be endless. Personally, as a Warriors fan, I’d like to go back and play with Run-TMC.

And/or you should be able to select an “all-time” team for each franchise, making a 12-man roster of the best (or worst lol) players to ever play for that franchise. That way, even some of the hard-luck franchises could trot out a pretty sick lineup.

Oh and did I mention this was a redue.
    1. Kobe Bryant
    2. LeBron James
    3. Dwyane Wade
    4. Dirk Nowitzki
    5. Tim Duncan
    6. Allen Iverson
    7. Steve Nash
    8. Carmelo Anthony – many of you were outraged that he was too high. 30.8 ppg to lead the league so far on nearly 49% from the field.
    9. Chris Paul – some of you thought he was too high. I’m fine with him here.
    10. Kevin Garnett – Could be higher, but I’m fine with this.
    11. YAO – Seemed high at first, but he’s justifying it with his play.
    12. Elton Brand
    13. Gilbert Arenas
    14. Shaquille O’Neal – some of you thought this was too low. It might not even be low enough.
    15. Dwight Howard
    16. Andrei Kirilenko – this was a little crazy. My bad!
    17. Tracy McGrady – A little bit low. I would still have Yao higher than him though.
    18. Paul Pierce – Should have been higher.
    19. Vince Carter
    20. Chris Bosh – Should have been higher.
    21. Pau Gasol – Who is Pau Gasol?
    22. Ron Artest
    23. Jermaine O’Neal
    24. Amare Stoudemire
    25. Tony Parker – Probably too high.
    26. Ray Allen
    27. Shawn Marion – Probably too low. I guess.
    28. Chauncey Billups – Too high.
    29. Joe Johnson – Too low.
    30. Kirk Hinrich – Way too high. I accept the blame for this.
    31. Manu Ginobili
    32. Ben Wallace
    33. Michael Redd – Too low.
    34. JASONKIDD! – Way too low, but still an injury/breakdown risk.
    35. Rip Hamilton
    36. Jason Richardson – should be lower and Baron Davis should be on the list.
    37. Jason Terry
    38. Sam Cassell – Should be higher.
    39. Stephon Marbury – Uh… and we thought we had him pretty low.
    40. Antawn Jamison
    41. Andrew Bogut
    42. Mike Bibby
    43. Josh Howard
    44. Zach Randolph – Should be way higher, but that’s cause he’s living up to potential. Who knew?
    45. Adam Morrison
    46. Andrea Bargnani – Okay. This was goofy. Our bad. This upset people.
    47. Josh Smith
    48. Chris Kaman – should be a little bit higher.
    49. Darko Milicic – Yeah, that was dumb.
    50. Boris Diaw – Oh, where’s everyone that was so mad now?

  29. Fish says:

Howard believes the anthem misrepresents his views.. Why must he conform? Free country(?).

  31. GEE...currently pop locking and then the windmill! says:

Brown I like those ideas. I would also say add the different olympic teams. Then you could really play the dream team vs. Redeem team and others.

LOL just for fun make coaches playable lol. I would dunk on George Karl all DAY!

  32. Tom S. says:

    Ben Wallace, #32? LMAO!!

  33. P_Dizzle says:

LMAO at post 28. Any list that has Sam Cassell and Darko on it’s TOP 50 list don’t watch a game of hoops. Also, where is Deron Williams on that list and Carlos Boozer. Granted Booz might be a stretch but hell Cassell and Darko are on it.

I am interested to see what Curry does in Mo-town. Yes it is ridiculous that coaches are only coaching for a couple years and if they don’t win a ‘chip in that time they are fired. It is ridiculous that D’Antoni and Avery Johnson got booted out of town. There is only 1 team out of 30 that’s putting Larry O’Brien’s nuts on their face. That is one of the things that I hate about sports. It’s hard to be effective when the boss is breathing down your neck every day.

  34. Diego says:

When Abdul-Rauf was known as Chris Jackson (about a 6′1″ point guard), he played ball at LSU at least for a couple of years, and his career there overlapped a bit with Shaq, I believe.

At LSU, Jackson was unreal, posting like some 40-50 point games. He did okay in the League before his hub bub of not standing during the National Anthem at NBA games, but he never really panned out like in college.

I think he retired pretty young and likely was blackballed by the League powers that be.

  35. rodnets says:

The NBA is so strict with weed or the dress code, where is the comish when it comes to an irresponsible act that damages NBA as a whole.

  36. schoops says:

@fish.. he doesn’t have to conform, but he could state his views in a more tactful way.

Is it too much to ask to get Josh Howard and Stephon Marbury rippingly high doing an interview together? That would be fantastic.

  37. that's whats up says:

…so if marijuana was legalized today…..made completely legal.

how many NBA players do you think would come out and say they burn?

    what’s the percentage?? 65% ?
…and which ones would start smoking again after being clean for a while?

  38. Suciniac says:

Everyone gave Spain and Calderon a hard time over THAT photo, saying if it were the US team they would get fined by Stern maybe even suspended for few games and blah blah. Now, you have Mr Weed making a blatantly racist remark and it barely makes news, not even a warning or a statement by El commissioner.Yeah right.

  39. Sam I Am says:

you know what pisses me off about J.Howard and his racist or prejudice or hatred or ignorant comment…

The bama is hatin on the US, but lovin that US Money & his US paycheck & US drugs

    it’s ridiculous for real

  40. JDig says:

haha ESPN just posted a story on it now, so you know it’s gonna blow up. and that top 50 NBA players list looks it was thought up by a blind mentally challenged baby. How you gonna put Dirk at 4? CP3, Duncan, Melo, Dwight, Amare, Bosh… all EASILY better then Dirk.

  41. Austin Burton says:

What exactly was racist about Howard’s comment?

  42. Suciniac says:

    @Austin
That’s what I was wondering about the Spanish photo.

  43. Austin Burton says:

The Spanish photo was pretty clearly mocking (even if it was playful) Chinese people. Howard said, “I don’t celebrate the national anthem. I’m Black.” Where’s the racism?

  44. Celts Fan says:

so Adam Morrison and Sam Cassell are on the list and Brandon Roy and Deron aren’t? AWFUL.

  45. Celts Fan says:

There is none AB. It’s dumb (why bother saying it?) but it’s not racist by any means. It’s a free country, he can say and believe whatever he wants, BUT so can the rest of us, and a good chunk of the rest will crucify this dude for a playful 1 liner that I don’t have any problem with. Memo to anyone even close to famous: Welcome to 2008 fellas. It’s called YouTube and ANYTHING you do, ANYWHERE will end up there…

  46. fallinup says:

Oh my, that’s the worst list ever. SLAM sucks.

  47. Suciniac says:

So, the Spanish Photo was CLEAR?? but you can’t understand the “I’m Black” as a racist comment?Howard could have left it at “I don’t celebrate the national anthem” and still be infinitely more CLEAR as being racist than Spain. The “I’M BLACK” is the exclamation mark on the whole statement.

  48. Austin Burton says:

    I’m Black.

(Did I just say something racist?)

  49. JC says:

Coach K basketball for sega genesis was tha bomb!!

  50. dapro says:

    @Suciniac

How is stating “I’M BLACK” racist?

Clearly, he is black and his reasoning for not celebrating a song is due to what it represents.

I don’t buy the argument of “Well he’s rich and should be content” for acknowledging the song. In his shoes I would take a similar stance but it would be done on a different platform.

I understand his logic but not his method. I see nothing racist about his statement.

  51. Suciniac says:

Well I was trying to stick to my buddhist roots and take the middle way but here’s what the Spanish photo and Howard’s comment can be compared to.

The Spanish photo is like a portrait of a nude woman in an art gallery that people find offensive while Howard’s comment’s like a portrait of a huge middle finger with FUCK YOU written under it which isn’t offensive at all(Hey it’s a free county).

Still, if you don’t find Howard’s comments as racist then fine.Doesn’t bother me at all.I am not Spanish nor American,so, what a person making millions of Dollars and then disses his Country on tape isn’t going to spoil my day.

Oh, and I’m yellow or wheatish or whatever else cereal-ish in colour.IF any one finds that Racist than may god have mercy on your brains.

  52. Suciniac says:

    @dapro

Because he brought the issue of the colour of his skin as a reason why he doesn’t celebrate the Anthem. As someone said in another post that he’s white and still doesn’t acknowledge the Anthem but his reason were because he doesn’t like the government or how the country’s being run. It’s not because he’s white.

It’s ok to not like your government or things like that but at least give a valid logical reason.”I’m Black”??? If that’s his only reason than I say it’s racist.

  53. GEE...currently pop locking and then the windmill! says:

    LOLLLLLLLLLL @ wheatish!

The spanish photo is like a portrait of a nude woman…

….on crack, with the residue on her face, while frowning, shrivled in an alley during the rain, with needles around her, as a dog comes and lifts his leg to add injury to insult. That my friend is what the spanish photo is like.

What Howard did was dumb to though.

I ain’t Spanish either lol, I am hot chocolateish!

  54. Suciniac says:

Nice finishing touches you added there to my nude woman.LOL and nice imagination too.I can just visualize that masterpiece.

  55. Sam I Am says:

    ya’ll are tooo funny

    You know why it’s racist…

Racism, by its simplest definition, is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. People with racist beliefs might hate certain groups of people according to their racial groups

He thinks he doesn’t have to do this because he’s black, therefore more superior to anyone else and its’ justified because he’s black

Sounds racist to me, but I can always be wrong

  56. Quest??? says:

it aint racist, its just dumb, he was probably high then too.

  57. GEE...currently pop locking and then the windmill! says:

First off Sam I Am way to drop that.

This is the thing though. LOL Sam I Am while I think you are right, I don’t even think he was going at it in that respect lol. I don’t think his microscopic mind was even of that train of thought.

Lately dude been coming off reaaalll simple, so in my opinion dude was clearly talking without thinkin and said it for who knows what reason (possibly friends, maybe thinking that was a legit reason, or what he heard someone else say no doubt)
It’s possible that he said it cause no other quick reason came to his small peanut like brain.
It’s possible he thinks all black people think like him, and it was just going to be accepted.

Whatever the case I don’t think he said it in the motive of being a racist even though it clearly comes off that way in different regards. He don’t seem like the deep thinking kind.

“Don’t you ever touch a black man’s radio!” -Chris Tucker

  58. Sam I Am says:

    Gee Frist off..

You are def as cool as they say…

lol nah I know he probably wasn’t aiming to be racist, but in general its just hard to take in b/c its just an endless curve in the cycle that “race” will always show up in something and really never let down, no matter which side it comes from.

It’s like me saying since I’m spanish, “I’m not not going over there, or doing this, or shaking his hand cause he black,” and it being justified.

But nonetheless it was nice to participate in a debate. Always window watching, now I’m on the inside – Whoooaa lol

  59. Sam I Am says:

    First*

  60. GEE...currently pop locking and then the windmill! says:

Sam I Am preshate it and I get all ya saying.

Fa real though I think dude had one of them Homer Simpson my brain just walked out on me blank moments and followed it all up with “I’m black” lol.

What is crazy and possible here to a great extent is how we can take so much stuff and make it racist. I am sure you seen over-militant cats that go off about things that could be so far from true.

“See the black sole on a shoe is just a symbol of the man walkin on us as a people. This is why we must switch to wearing only shoes with a white sole to rise up.”

“Look at the dry erase boad my brothas. It is a classic example of how the white man is using us. Notice that the board is white and big, yet we black letters are small. Then what do we wipe the black letters away with?…(the profound moment) A black eraser. See this, my brothas, is a classic case of divide and defeat, because once those letters are gone and the eraser is done…my brothas all that is left is the white board.”

The classic one is the game of pool of course lol.
White ball knocks all others out, and wins the game from of course knocking the black ball in.

This world is crazy. Of course if we all were the same color all over the world, it would be something else we would find to cause division.

    Crazy.

  61. that's whats up says:

    Gee….that’s some funny shit.

Big surprise here but Gilbert got another surgery on his left knee to remove some debris and ease the swelling that was making his rehab. painful. He’s out till December but he says that now the rehab should be completely pain-free. I thought that was supposed to happen after the 1st and 2nd surgery…

“The Spanish photo was pretty clearly mocking (even if it was playful) Chinese people. Howard said, “I don’t celebrate the national anthem. I’m Black.” Where’s the racism?”

c’mon… may be a day late, but pleeease… what it means is, the national anthem, all the meaning and history of it, are for whites? blacks don’t dig the anthem? so, if your black, ur exempted in respecting the legacy? tell that to barack and you guys will have a long talk…

for all we know, corny and all, celebrating the anthem is celebrating the freedom you and i and all of us are enjoying… if j-ho don’t dig it, might as well STFU! if anything, its a major misrepresentation of black people…

as quest said, if it ain’t racist, then it’s effin’ dumb…

by the way, that top 50 list is a close 2nd to j-ho’s act on “this year’s top 10 stupid list” –

…morrison, bargnani & ben wallace over j-smoove? WTF are they smokin’?

just let me put in my 2 cents here, maybe the similarities with Abdul Rauf and Howard go further than we realize…maybe Josh Howard has Tourettes Syndrome just like Chris Jackson/Mahmoud Abdul Rauf did, and so thats why he just blurts out stupid shit…its like out of his control or something
