Monta Ellis confesses, and Kobe Bryant has a major announcement about a major announcement

Count us among those who wanted to believe Monta Ellis. From our experiences working with him, Monta is a good dude and a humble dude who loves nothing more than to just play basketball — not to mention he’s one of the most entertaining cats in the League when he steps on the court. But as the Contra Costa Times first reported yesterday, Monta has admitted to the Warriors that he lied about how he hurt his ankle, and injury that will put him out for the next three or four months. Details are sketchy at the moment; the only revelations being made public are that Monta wasn’t playing basketball when he got hurt, and that he got hurt outdoors … The newspaper polled its readers and asked, “How should the Warriors punish Monta Ellis for lying about his injury?” Twenty-four percent said he should be fined more than $500,000 and another 18% said Monta should pay a fine upwards of $1 million. Seventeen percent of respondents said GS should void Monta’s contract, 16% said he’s been punished enough already, 11% said to suspend him, and 14% went with “Make him wash Jeff Kent’s truck for three months.” … And of course, any talk of Monta and his ankle inevitably must be followed by Manu Ginobili and his ankle. The Spurs are apparently holding off any discussions of a contract extension with their leading scorer until after they see how Manu recovers from surgery. Manu’s current deal runs out in 2010 … Kobe announced yesterday that he’s going to announce Monday the date of his pinkie finger surgery. That’s a little excessive on the announcing, ain’t it? Then again, Kobe has been known to turn something simple like getting surgery into a major event before, so … The Zach Randolph-to-Memphis for Darko-n-Marko deal seems almost imminent, and Darko’s agent says his man would love to play in New York. If this trade happens, that means in the last few years, the Knicks will have employed the biggest front-office bust of maybe all-time (Isiah), the biggest coaching bust of maybe all-time (Larry Brown), and the biggest NBA Draft bust of maybe all-time (Darko). Even Celtics fans have to feel a little sorry for Knicks fans …

D-WadeD-Wade rocks

On Friday night, Dwyane Wade took part in an Xbox Live “Game with Fame” session with some fans in Chicago. Our buddies at Xbox sent us some pics of D-Wade rocking out on Guitar Hero: AerosmithJosh Smith to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “I feel more confident than I ever have in [shooting threes]. And all the people that knock me for the shots I take, it doesn’t mean anything to me.” … Remember MC Breed? He’s the rapper who did “Ain’t No Future In Your Frontin’” back in the day. We found out yesterday that Breed collapsed while playing pickup ball in Atlanta and had to be taken to the hospital for kidney failure. Upon last report he was in critical condition and on life support. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Breed and his family … The other day Dime crew member Jed sent out this e-mail not long after he and pack of folks dashed out of the office: “Burke, Whitey, Kyle, Clare, Alex and I were running to catch the subway. I ran and held the doors for them as they tried to close it. Subway was packed. Subway driver gets on and says, ‘The subway is delayed at the station for no other reason than some of your fellow passengers feel like they’re more important than everyone else.’ Awesome. FYI, neither Alex or Clare made the subway.” … We’re out like NY fans embracing Darko …

  7. Coop says:

Way to give internet commentators a bad name you attention-seeking pieces of shit.

Moving on, GS should take this opportunity to realise what an awful waste of 66mil Monta is and void his contract (though they cant do that unless it turns out he’s been on a bike/snowboard/using a jetpack etc). Monta is a guy who relies quite heavily on his athletic ability so an ankle injury is no joke. If it was his forearm i probably wouldnt be fussed by if i give you 66million dollars then you’d damn well better wrap yourself in cotton wool!

  8. YOUNGFED says:

Damn yall going hard this morning. Anyway is it me or does D-Wade look like Star Jones in that pick. I ain’t saying, but i’m just saying.

If your 1st and thats all you got to say, you’re really last. HOLLA!!!!

  9. Three Stacks says:

It’s been 2 weeks since the Olympics ended, why the hell did he wait so long to get the surgery? Sounds like someone doesn’t feel like attending training camp.

KOBE ON MONDAY: i would like to announce that no one will be sexually assaulted during or after the operation of my pinkie.

  11. loganlight says:

    Good Point Three Stacks…

The Warriors are in a sticky situation. No doubt that if it was a bench warmer with this injury, he would be cut and made to pay back his contract… There is a huge double standard in the works.

    Good Luck Monta.

  12. josh tha roc says:

So does that mean Haddadi starts?

  13. sans says:

GS shouldn’t pay Monta for the games he misses. Pure and simple; just like when you get suspended.

How can you trade Z-Bo and not grab Lowry? Is he the untouchable backup? And why give up your whole frontcourt if you have no one reliable at center? And what are you gonna do with Curry, Darko, Marc, and David Lee? Will Pure Hustle David Lee finally start? Do you go insane the minute Dolan hands you the keys to the Knicks, or does it take a week? I’m out like understanding the Knicks management…

  14. josh tha roc says:

is the ‘Marko’ part of the deal relating to Marc Gasol or Marko Jaric?

  15. Coop says:

Jaric. The Knicks want to overpay for 2 average point guards who aren’t starter material.

  16. schoops says:

God damn it! Didn’t we fire Isiah, or is his ghost still somewhere around MSG. The thought of going and paying money to see Darko and Curry work an inside game makes me want to jump off a cliff. I didnt like Randolph, but we’re getting cap in return, and having to pay some of his salary. This is Chris Wallace, the dude is a fucking moron and we’re losing out in this trade!?

Stop writing “1st”. Just write “pathetic” instead Are you really that excited about it? But at leastt you talked some homophobic crap “straight”baller.

  17. Dagomar says:

Smith sounds like a tool. I can’t stand it when people don’t listen to criticism and just continue being worse than they could be. Shooting the three isn’t the problem, but with a body like that Smith should be cutting and slashing when he can.

  18. heartbreaker85 says:

im starting to think that mike d antoni and donnie walsh are just the same as isiah thomas, only they prefer to get euros instead of americans.

at least isiah was a good judge of talent (not character though).

  19. that's whats up says:

did you ever hear about that guy who started off trading a red paper clip with random people and eventually got a house out of it?
I’m thinking the Knicks intended to do the same but are actually doing the exact opposite. They began with a championship contender and will end up with a 600 million dollar paper clip, and that paper clip will no doubt be disgruntled as well

  20. Amar says:

marko j in NYC is good for him and his soon-to-be wife who lives there full time.

  21. Amar says:

that’s whats up . . . that paper clip guy is crazy. but he would still be a better GM than some of the guys we’ve seen make trades so far. (gasol for kwame, what?)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_red_paperclip

  22. Kobeef says:

I’m going to go against the grain and say the Darko and Marko for Z-bo trade is a good idea for the Knicks.

Darko and Marko are both better athletes than Zach and you need well conditioned athletes to run an up -tempo system (notice that shaq didn’t fit so well with D’Antoni’s suns?). The knicks need to change the culture of the team in order to improve and Zach + Curry + Steph + Q are primarily reponsible for the “we suck and we don’t care attitude”. All of those pieces need to be moved so this is a start.

This move gives the Knicks the makings of a big, fast, athletic starting line and sends a clear message to the problem makers.

    PG - Duhon/Robinson/Roberson
    SG - Crawford/Jaric
    SF - Gallinari/Richardson/Jeffries
    PF - Lee/Curry
    C - Darko/Curry/J. James

  23. Smitty313 says:

They are not going to be able to get rid of Steph, so he better be there main point. He’s still better than any of their other point gaurds, plus I dont think there has been a bench warmer who gets paid 21 mill.

  24. Skeeter McGee says:

Man, the Knicks faithful will boo anyone that gets selected in the NBA Draft, and that’s BEFORE they see them play for their team. Can you imagine the boos Darko will get after everyone know what he has done (or hasn’t done) since he got drafted? I guess if there’s anyone that could make him comfortable as far as style of play is concerned, it would be D’Antoni, but even he might not be able to salvage the biggest bust of all time.

Just for kicks, who would you rather have on your team: Darko or Kwame?

  25. the mamba says:

I’ve said it b4, I like this trade 4 the knicks. Both guys fit in well with d antoni’s system. Remember how bad diaw was when he went from atl 2 phoenix?

  26. Kobeef says:

    @Smitty
I’m going to use that - Stephon “The 21 Million Dollar Benchwarmer” Marbury

    @ Skeeter
Darko over Kawme. That said, Kwame could give the knicks the biggest, fattest froncourt in the nba (w. curry and z-bo)

  27. A-Slam says:

what are the odds that Ellis sustained his injury by accidentally dropping a huge bong on his foot?

  28. schoops says:

true, but diaw was also very young. Darko’s been in the league awhile, and Jaric has been around even longer. There have been on losing teams for most of their careers and at no point has anyone ever said “wow, _____ just helped us win.” Granted getting rid of Randolph and his longer contract was great, but can’t we get someone like Warrick who would REALLY thrive in a fast-paced game (lot faster than Darko and more athletic).

I agree Isiah could see talent (when it came to drafting) but that man would sign a 10 day old hotdog to a $32 Mil. contract is it palyed well ina few post season games. Oh wait, that hotdog is jerome james.

Donnie Walsh needs to lock it up. That team is good for maybe 9th in the east, at best.

  29. rlf says:

as usual, you don’t get your FACTS straight. let me explain it to you

kobe said he would make the announcement on monday, because the ocregister, an orange county newspaper has been bothering kobe and asking him when he will get the surgery done.

kobe told them that on monday he will say when he will have it done.

    plain and simple.

please at least hide your biases, thank you

  30. jay says:

    “wild boys says:

the game called out dwayne wade on madden 09… that puppy got that ass-whoop he deserve..”

that aint even true. the game called out BOW WOW, not dwade. moron..

  31. Borgs says:

Darko stinks, ain’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, and rarely looks cognizant, but Kwame’s a comfortably bigger Draft bust. At least Milicic blocks shots, is reasonably skillful, provides a lefty option and is genuinely big. What does Kwame do even moderately to very well, apart from drop the ball? And that was pick numero uno.

All things considered (contracts, knucklehead factors, tactical need etc.), I think a Randolph-Milicic trade is about equal. So are the respective franchises’ title aspirations.

blah blah blah blah.blah blah blah blah…….blah blah blah blah…….blah blah blah blah…….blah blah blah blah…….blah blah blah blah…….blah blah blah blah…….blah blah blah blah…….blah blah blah blah………….

  33. Big V says:

Darko and Marko both suck balls. I’d rather have Z-Bo anyday of the week. This trade is atrocious. Here’s hoping it doesn’t happen…..

  34. Coop says:

It’s not atrocious; Memphis get a 20-10 guy and a decent big person. The Knicks get to make space for Bron and get 2 guys who, whilst not very good, do fit the system better.

  35. that's whats up says:

if you think Bron is going to the Knicks you is higher than amotha-fukka
