Mario Chalmers, Darrell Arthur Caught With Weed

This is a great way for Mario Chalmers to kill the positive momentum he built up by killing in NBA summer league play. According to reports, Mario and his former Kansas teammate Darell Arthur we caught doing something they shouldn’t have been doing:

Rookies Mario Chalmers of the Miami Heat and Darrell Arthur of the Memphis Grizzlies were thrown out of the NBA’s Rookie Transition Program on Wednesday morning after being caught in their hotel room at Doral Arrowwood in Rye Brook, N.Y., with marijuana, according to sources.

“Yes, they were sent home for violating program rules,” NBA spokesman Brian McIntyre said.

According to a source, the players were also fined $20,000 each and will begin the season on the suspended list. McIntyre would not confirm that, but he said the league will continue to investigate the matter and that appropriate sanctions will take place.

In the grand scheme of things, this probably won’t really hurt Mario’s chance at rookie season burn, but it certainly doesn’t help.

Poor Mario. Give the kid a break, he played HS ball in Alaska and then went to Kansas…what else is there to do in those two places than to get high? :P

  5. Fabian says:

what a great way to throw away all that you have built up with very hard work throughout your life..

  6. Kudabeen says:

Right off the bat though? Truly a bone head move. This is out of left field. Honestly didn’t see these two guys being in this situation. Meanwhile guys like JR Giddens are continuing to battle bad reputations…

  7. T Dubbs says:

Wow, someone else in the news besides Portland and the Pacers.

  8. fallinup says:

You’d think that coming out of college, they should know the dorm room trick of blowing your inhaled smoke through a toilet paper tube with a dryer sheet on the end to kill the smell…these kids don’t learn anything anymore. LOL

#11 thugs roll? More like idiots! They are potentially throwing away their lives and millions of dollars. But I guess they’ll get paid in street cred by knuckleheads like you.

  14. Bondzai007 says:

It sounds like they are getting plenty of burn as it is.

  15. Diego says:

So they go to this little camp to learn how to be nice little fellows and learn not to carouse too much, put a raincoat on their johnsons, eat their vitamins, and say their prayers, and what do they do? Smoke weed in their room! The NBA should make them stand in the corner wearing dunce hats during the classes and put their noses on the chalkboards, not send them home from charm school!!

  17. SayItAintSo says:

Ok, I’ll agree that it’s stupid to smoke in a hotel room during an NBA transitional program but this strike a chord with me because I detest the ‘in God we trust’ moral fiber of our nation.

If the man is doing his job, legally considered an adult and isn’t harming anyone but himself…get the HELL over it! I don’t smoke, but our infatuation with focusing on non-violent crimes is so out of control when you consider some of the sex-offenders, murderers, yadda yadda…that are walking arount.

Let the poor kids smoke a J in the privacy of their own homes and then just go ball.

  18. Haze says:

Cant blame them..Pass it to the left please

  19. that's whats up says:

some people are so fuckin’ stupid that it just boggles the mind.

…and I just smoked on my lunch break – lol

  20. LakeShow84 says:

    Cant we just accept athletes smoke weed?? And in honesty, any activity that puts you through severe physical conditioning could be treated through marijuana.. Football players definetely and basketball players, ehhh maybe but still.. This weed story is getting old.. We sound like we’re 13, look at the header for this;

MARIO CHALMERS, DARRELL AUTHUR CAUGHT WITH WEED

Who gives a f#$k.. players get away with domestic violence from being roadraged and beating up their girls (or for no reason, sorry Jkidd)all day and it gets swept under the rug.. Josh Howard admits doing it in the offseason and suddenly hes a bad role model and a bad teammate.. Man this country got its head up its ass sometimes..

How come Shaq getting a restraining order from a woman who has actual emails and text messages from him?? That shit seems major to me.. didnt he threaten to kill her?? rigggggghhhhhttttt

But oh snap! this just in! Kevin Durant was seen hitting a bong..

  21. sans says:

@ SayItAintSo–you are absolutely right. One of the best books ever written, Peter McWilliams’ AIN’T NOBODY’S BUSINES IF YOU DO: THE ABSURDITY OF CONSENSUAL CRIMES IN OUR FREE COUNTRY tackled civil liberties issues a decade plus ago, then the author died after being denied medicinal marijuana while battling AIDS and cancer.

Smoking weed should not be a big deal to anyone anymore. It is not a performance enhancing drug (the opposite more often than not) and less harmful than alcohol. Would anyone care is these under-age millionaires were caught drinking? I don’t think so.

You got to hate when the NBA feels it has to shine up its image, while baseball made billions by turning a blind eye to steroid abuse for a decade.

  22. Kevin says:

“Poor Mario. Give the kid a break, he played HS ball in Alaska and then went to Kansas…what else is there to do in those two places than to get high? :P

    hahahahaahhaa

This better show up on the best comments for the day!

  23. sans says:

    @ 20…
yeah and Chris Mullin used to slap on his girl to. More aggressive, physically dominant athlete’s should smoke. And Chill out. Shaq also paid performers not to get on a bill with that girl MaryJane.

  24. fallinup says:

    I’ll smoke to that, sans!

  25. ERIC says:

The NBA will require that both players attend the transition/orientation next season. I think it will be pointless at that juncture.

Yes, they should be fined and suspended for getting caught smoking. BUT they should not be kicked out of the program which could only exacerbate the problem. if anything, Chalmers and Arthur NEED to be there more than the other rookies. this rookie program is a transition and teaches the young players how to acclimate/adjust to life in the NBA. these 2 rooks clearly need the guidance and support – dont kick them out where they can get into more trouble.

  26. fallinup says:

Seriously…”He’s ruining his career.” ????? They got caught getting high (on WEED!), not eating babies. LOL

  27. dapro says:

    @SayItAintSo

I agree these are two “grown men” they still have to be more repsonsible.

If I get caught smoking chances are I loose my job

  28. Michorizo says:

I wonder who caught them … was it the hotel employees responding to the aroma of the sweet scent of marijuana lingering in the air or was it just some hater ratting them out.

  29. Celts Fan says:

when I first saw this, I thought it was probably just something dumb, young guys being young guys, etc. THEN I saw it was at an NBA Rookie orientation thing. You gotta be kidding me… are we sure these guys didn’t drop in the Draft cuz of head injuries? I mean, at the Rookie Transition program?!?!

  30. dapro says:

If he was at the crib smoking, aight that’s his business

    but they weren’t

If your job pays for you to attend a 3 day seminar in Cali((tempting)) You decide “Ok, I’ll grab a lil bit of that kill and make my way to the room”

While Chiefing you get a knock from hotel security about the smells leaking from your room. Since you can’t shoot a jump shot to save your life, your kicked out of the room and possibly charged if the police are called.

Your boss finds out and you’re probably fired not suspended.

Smoke at the crib family, it’s safer

  31. Sacto-J says:

    First!
    oh, sorry ya’ll. My bad, I’m high…
The reason the NBA should continue it’s morally stellar job of dissuading their employees from smoking marijuana is clear and evident. Marijuana is a gateway drug. A person will forever after be plagued by the incessant urge to tear open a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos, Funyons, and / or Slim Jims, at any given moment. There is no safety net once you’ve inhaled, and these guys are just as susceptible as anyone else, maybe even more so. Do you want your overpaid athletes and entertainers wasting millions on cheeseburger binges and trips to the ‘hood to “recop”? It’s time we begin to concern ourselves with these morally challenging issues. I say up with hope, and down with dope!
Could you pass the cheeze whiz…and a light….?

  32. Ansonious says:

lol Taking a page out of Lamar Odom’s book. But I guess if your Josh Howard it’s ok, they should’ve waited til they were considered franchise players(I’m only speaking of Mario who does have the potential,) and then maybe we wouldn’t be talking about this. I’m out like Mario’s bubbler bowl peace!

  33. rodnets says:

this is less dangerous than riding a motorcycle

  34. T Dubbs says:

LOL, some of these comments are classic.

Fact #1 – Weed is illegal, regardless if it’s a “violent crime” or not. If you do something that’s illegal (whether you’re at home or not), expect negative consequences.

Fact #2 – The ‘In God We Trust’ “moral fiber” is instilled in our countries’ constitution and justice system. Whether you like it or not is irrelevant, but you must respect it.

If you want something to be upset over, be upset over the notion people with money can get out of anything 99% of the time. (not counting running a dog fighting ring or betting on NBA games) If I was the one smoking in the hotel room, I’d probably be headed to Pelican Bay right now to do about 3 years. These dip shits got off lucky.

  35. Spliff 2 My Lou says:

Nothing wrong with getting high until you caught. There’s a time and place fellas. Definitely not at an NBA sponsored rookie program.

  36. Yoooo says:

Smoking & Smoking ON THE JOB are 2 different things. They deserve to get jumped by every power forward in the league.

  37. BALLZ says:

@T Dubbs- don’t know where the fuck you’re from, but getting caught with some weed in a hotel room don’t get anybody three fucking years unless you’re on probation for some other shit or you have like 72 pounds of dope. Dumbass.
BTW, who are you to tell us the definition of “moral fiber?” Smoking a joint every now and then has nothing to do with morality. There are “good” and “moral” people who trust in God and don’t smoke dope, and then go rape boys in the ass.

  38. Drink The Haterade (Kobe Rocks) says:

Let me tell why this isn’t a good idea… Last week my nephews came home from HS to tell me about thier friend who “used” to smoke weed. The kid was arrested for texting this Mary Jane dealer, but was clearly into smokin that rock. Mary Jane was his gateway to smokin that rock. And we as adults should not encourage younger kids to smoke. If you want to smoke then thats your business, but these two knuckle heads decided to play in the NBA which means thier personal lives are no longer personal and smoke weed, which is now all over the internet. Like I said you wanna smoke do so in your own privacy.

  39. A says:

  40. smokez4Dayz says:

  43. dapro says:

They got a pass from the Leauge

That should be the last pass these mofo’s take until practice

  44. MBE18 says:

Who cares. Alcohol is by far a worse drug to abuse.

  45. Sacto-J says:

Haterade – The gateway issue was already covered in my previous post. I’m curious how many people really care that a player of any sport gets caught with weed? And speaking of moral fiber built into the constitution, said document was printed on hemp paper, hemp, which was this country’s first cash crop. Alcohol is directly related to thousands of deaths each year. Weed is related to exactly zero (allright, maybe 5, but it does say right on the cheeze whiz bottle that the contents are under pressure. You gotta read it, man!)

  46. Drink The Haterade (Kobe Rocks) says:

Sacto J– You did discuss gateway, but in a comical sense about eating, this dude I’m talkin about wasn’t eating he was smokin crack.

Also you are correct in that alcohal has more related deaths per year then Mary Jane. Unfortunately until the gov’t can figure out a way to collect taxes on it, it will cont to be illegal.

  47. Sacto-J says:

I just don’t buy the hype that weed is a gateway drug (obviously.) I’ve known meth users who’ve never touched weed. Just because you’ve puffed on a spliff doesn’t mean you’ll be binging on heroin in the foreseeable future. That’s like saying, “I caught sight of the neighbor’s wife in her underwear. I better wear a condom to bed tonight….” but I also understand everyone’s different.
You have a point on the taxes, though I think there’s bigger money behind keeping it illegal than taxing could ever hope to replace. Dow and Johnson & Johnson like not having to compete against a homeopathic, healthy alternative to 90% of their products….
Anyway, my real question is “who really cares that these overpaid clowns are getting high?” I mean, Yikes! They’re going to lose $20,000 of their $700,000 rookie contract. It would take me like 5 years or more to make that kind of money, so I have a hard time giving a shit, ya know…
Now going to jail for dog fighting after repeatedly denying any such conduct kind of sparks my interest(pun intended…)

  48. Luigi says:

why do ppl do this…theyre just ruining their lives?

  49. Ashlov says:

Ruin their lives by smoking weed? Are you fucking kidding me? Same thing as saying ruin your life by drinking a beer. What a joke.

Marv Albert wore women’s underwear and bit chicks. THAT is a problem. Hitting a bong with some ho’s sounds like most weekends when I was his age. He gets paid millions to play ball; as long as he can be a great point guard for the Heat, I don’t give a figgity fuck if he does bumps off Pat Riley’s ass.

  56. Kansas resident says:

What a way to embarrass Kansas. Thanks guys. Maybe they should have picked a candidate further down the draft list that would have really appreciated the opportunity. They knew better, no sympathy. This is a once in a lifetime thing and they just thought they were slicker than the average bear.

  57. Kansas resident says:

This makes you wonder what they were doing at school in Kansas? Surely, this is not their first rodeo!

  58. T Dubbs says:

    @BALLZ

Please, people get more time here for smoking a bowl than they do for murder 2. So, smoking weed has nothing to do with morality?

Definition of moral: of, pertaining to, or concerned with the principles or rules of right conduct or the distinction between right and wrong; ethical.

Weed is illegal, bottom line. Sure there are worse things available to the public that aren’t illegal, but that’s the law. Not much more to say on the subject… the kids were wrong, and they got off easy. Peace.

  59. B. says:

Former bell hop here, even commentator steve “snapper” jones was smoking in the hotel

  60. doug says:

First of all they should of known better. It´s not like they never heard of other people getting caught. Wether the rule is right or wrong it´s a rule and they need to learn to follow the rules. You know how many kids are dying to be in there shoes and here they go taking it for granted. They should lose their right to play for a year and maybe that would teach them a lesson and maybe next time they won´t take things for granted. i´m sure then they won´t think it was worth getting high.
