New Orleans Hornets Get Good News After Hurricane Gustav

When Mayor Ray Nagin announced late last week that everyone in the city of New Orleans needed to evacuate before Hurricane Gustav made landfall, many people imagined that this storm would seal the fate of the city and its beloved professional teams.

But, as the storm was weakened when it passed through Cuba, and then landed further west of New Orleans than originally predicted, the people of the city, and the teams, can return home to serious damage, but not total destruction.

Hornets majority owner George Shinn was in contact with Mayor Ray Nagin in the days before the storm arrived and pledged his help in the recovery from the latest storm.

Although the storm spared New Orleans catastrophic damage, wind damage still was substantial, so the team expected to take on new projects as a result of the storm while continuing to help the ongoing rebuilding process from Hurricane Katrina, Bower said.

When Gustav passed through New Orleans on Monday, debris dented siding on the New Orleans Arena and damaged a large video marquee on an external wall, but the interior and the overall structure, like the Louisiana Superdome next to it, appeared to be in good shape, said Doug Thornton, vice president of SMG, the company that manages both state-owned stadiums.

like i said on monday i am pleased the people actuallyed listened to the warnings this time. NO got lucky and yet not all at the same time.

with no terrible and total destruction i have to ask how many people will get out with the next one? i have already heard people saying things like “man i wish we had stayed” and ” we never needed to leave” so it makes you wonder.

good job from all sides on this one so far though

It’s sad because it was this kind of hype ( I don’t want to go so far as to say ‘over-reacting’ because we are responding to a potentially catastrophic storm ) that caused a lot of folks to think they could stick it out through Katrina. Really, parts of the city need to be moved/redistricted, etc. but I’m very glad that the French Quarter and my favorite New Orleans commodity, the Hornets, are still in good shape.
