Stephon Marbury says he’s always been a good teammate
Stephon Marbury (photo. Chad Griffith)Anyone who watched Stephon Marbury’s infamous Summer ‘07 interview with Bruce Beck knows that when those two get together, it’s like a twisted Bizarro World version of Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell bringing out the best in each other.
In the most recent Marbury/Beck encounter, Steph offered up a few gems that will give Knicks fans a headache:
Beck: Will you negotiate a buyout?
Marbury: Why would I settle when I earned the money I’m about to receive?
And then…
Beck: What do you have to say to the fans?
Marbury: All I want to do is win. I’m a New York kid just like you. I read the papers just like you … I understand how y’all feel inside your heart. You’re real New York fans; when you love, you love hard and when you get mad, you get mad hard. So I understand that. I just want another chance, that’s it. If I can get another chance which I think I’m being given, I’m gonna take full advantage of it. And if not, I understand, it’s a business. I’ll keep it moving and I’ll go someplace else. My heart is in New York.”
And finally…
Beck: Can you be a good soul, a good teammate all year?
Marbury: That’s all I’ve been.
There was also a moment where Beck brings up the interview from last summer and Steph cuts him off: “C’mon Mike!” To which Beck can only reply: “It’s Bruce.”

I hope Marbury doesn’t go to Miami, that’s the last thing and influence Chalmer’s and Beasley need.

George W Kush Sr says:
Give the guy one more go
if it dont pan out, just bench him and then trade him in february, yall paid him all last year to stay home, yall can pay him to be on the bench for 3 months if it dont work out.

I still don’t understand why Marbury is being made a scapegoat. They’ve got too many guys who need the ball in their hands to be effective. Lot’s of lazy players too.
I say let him play. If he doesn’t play up to expectations, get rid of him. They’re gonna have to pay him all his money though. I for one can’t fault him for that.

Coop says:
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH I can’t STAND this shit. Marbury might be lazy, might be rubbish, might be a cancer, might be the best pg ever, might be insane, but he is NOT a thief. He signed a contract offered to him. The Knicks took ownership of that contract when trading for him. That is that. They don’t like it? fire the fucking idiots making the decisions? Fans dont like it? stop funding the idiots. Dime doesnt like it? Dime should know better! Im sick to death of people thinking guys like Marbury have done something wrong. Would he warrant 21mil per season if he signed today? of course not, but that’s irrelevant. You want a war? wage it with guaranteed contracts not with the guys who benefit.
Talk to Stern!
Out.

How do New yorkers still hate this guy? He phucking bleeds blue and orange this is the only ball player in the world that wants to actually play for the knicks right now, even some of us commenting on this shytt might turn down a nyk offer lmao..they suck honestly…Let’s get back to hating the other teams and players in the league and stop hatin our own

BxBaller says:
I’m with you justice, Coop, & Brown. I didn’t see anything that was wrong with that interview. Steph knows that this is his last chance, so he’s gonna have to prove his worth. The Knicks took on that contract so they owe him that money. I so sick of the media & fans alike complaing when guys are paid x million dollars. Who in their right mind would not take money if thier employer is going to overpay them? Shom me one person and, that mofo is a straight up liar.

PJ 310 says:
Why is everyone acting like getting rid of Marbury will solve the Knicks problems, its a team game, the Knicks as a team just arent good, they need to find the right pieces.
And also, whats so wrong with Marbury in the first place??? I still think he’s a good player, no one told the Knicks to give hime that much money, thats managements fault, I hate the way New York fans are so fairweather, when the Knicks, Mets or Yankees are winning, they are the greatest team ever, but when theyre losing they want the whole team to be traded.

AJ knixx says:
coming from being a knicks fan my whole life, I want to say that its worth to keep him because people are talking like he’s that bad of a player even tho he only averaged 13 and 4. The knicks are under new management, and a new coach so its like starting over for everybody. Were payin him, shit
September 26th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
AJ knixx says:
***worth to keep him because hes not a bad player. The way i just wrote that made me sound like charle barkley. Does he make sense to anyone?or is it just me?

kermit the washington says:
This is the Knicks problem, not Steph’s. The Knicks made the foolish decision to go with this cat, and now they’re going to have to pay for it, and lie in the bed that they’ve made. Steph is a straight idiot who should go back to the playground where he came from, since he obviously hasn’t grown up past that stage.

Big V says:
This is the same thing people were saying about Allan Houston, except that people used the excuse of him getting injured as a cop out. The Knicks offer him the money and he’s the bad guy for taking it. And does anyone think they wanted him to play more than he himself wanted to be on that court? It’s not like he bitched out, hell, he’s STILL trying to help the team out. Not to go off topic, but the haters sound remarkably similar in these instances.
September 26th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Coop says:
I can’t recall the details of the Houston situation; with regard to injuries, teams at least have the facility to wipe the contract from the cap, and a proportion of a guys wages are centrally funded if he retires due to injury but i cant recall the parameters of that. I dont know if Houston could have saved everyone a headache by ‘retiring’ earlier.

@ Coop,
Not sure but wasn’t that the whole point of the Amnesty rule (Allan Houston Rule), which they ended up using on JYD anyway?

Promoman says:
Marbury’s a problem, but he isn’t the sole reason the Knicks are garbage. Dolan & Isiah stockpiled more ballhogs, lazy players, and flat-out low/no talents rather than real players. They won’t win with Robertson Duhon, or Nate starting anyway.

me says:
the last paragraph is too funny hahah. new york shoudnt try to buy him out, let him play. its a new coach and he hasnt played in a while and it seems like he wants to be outt here. the guy has talent, he can bring it or get paid twice and bring it someplace else.

Big V,
haha I remember ‘Slam’ calling it the ‘Allan Houston Rule’ and then looking like total asshats when NY didnt use it on H20. Being Slam, of course, they didnt admit fault.

Im sick of the Steph bashing that follows him where ever he goes now…from Jersey on hes been haunted by this cloud conjured up by pete vescey in ‘02 after the Nets missed the playoffs the year before (again) then Kidd comes in and hes some kind of savior?! nevermind that he fell into the perfect situation w/ a healthy (finally) kenyon martin, healthy keith van horn, who by the way hadnt seemed to be all that hungry to make it to the playoffs since his rookie year let-down, and 3 new young guys who LOVE to run the BEST guy steph had when he was in jersey besides van horn for 3 years was Johnny Newman the only problem was he was a WASHED UP vet damn near 40 years old…it was steph van horn lucious harris J-new k-mart and armon freakin gilliam! thats not a squad!! cmon!! then they get young guys and kidd and they make it to the finals and steph gets labeled some kind of a franchise killer its bull crap. he goes to phoenix and they make teh playoffs every year and lose to the spurs EVERY YEAR! they wasnt sayin shyt about tony parker when steph spent THOSE 3 years bustin his hump EVERY SINGLE MEETING!
they didnt boo him when he came here at first, they werent booing when he LEAD us to the playoffs that year, they felt his desire when we missed the post season by a few games cuz of poor execution and inexperience (mainly jamal crawford, dont get me wrong Ive ALWAYS loved craw…) they didnt have nothin to say. then the media puts that bug in their ear ” you know hes done this before…,” like it was HIS fault the T’wolves couldnt get out the first round, and NOT the youthful inexperience and being out-matched EVERY SINGLE YEAR or that its HIS fault jersey sucked cuz he ONLY averaged 24 and 9 instead of the 19 and 12 everyone seemed to want and not the wrag-tag bunch of BUMBS he had as help (kendall gill was a bum from day 1 in NJ…ask sam cassell he knows!) you CANT get credited with assists if the guys DONT SCORE!
you cant out it all on him the knicks have just plain sucked! thats the way it is…they had 3 great coaches since hes been there and they all said teh same thing about the TEAM “they lack effort” or “they dont want to play defense”…stephs not by any means a star defender but I dont really ever recall him lacking effort on the court at either end (obviously he works harder offensively but seriously…) at one point they had the worst record and THE MOST FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS, 12!! that was the WHOLE roster!!!! thats stephs fault? your crazy!
sorry I know its a rant but I cant take it anymore…
chris duhonh is a hustler but hes not going to be a #1 starting pg LEADER in this league I dont think ever hes a GREAT backup
sorry I know its long
