Stephon Marbury: Where Ya Heart At?
Stephon Marbury is the reason why I love basketball. It’s no secret that he will always be my favorite player. I followed Steph’s road to the NBA from his start at Lincoln High School in Coney Island. I remember watching Starbury, Matt Harpring, Drew Barry, and Ed Elisma get busy for coach Bobby Cremins at Georgia Tech. Man, those were the good ole days…
12 seasons and 4 NBA teams later Steph is on an obvious decline and many wonder about his mental stability. Nothing hurts more than seeing your childhood idol fall so fast. Say what you want about Stephon, but please recognize he is one of the best overall talents at the point guard position the NBA has ever seen. While talent isn’t everything, I accepted Marbury through the ups and downs like he was a family member.
Seeing Steph now almost feels as if I have lost a loved one. I am Stephon’s number one supporter and at times it seems like he has lost the heart that made him a legend on the streets of NYC. Prodigy and Havoc of Mobb Deep knew what they were talking about when they made this song. My only hope is that, if given the chance to play in NY this season, Steph can salvage what is left of his legacy and win over some of those who have given up on him…

the similarities between mobb deep and steph and their declining careers are fitting…
i definately wouldnt mind seeing stephon have an all star year though….as a surprise slap in the face to all the meanest of haters and a light shove to all the non haters that gave up on dude a while ago…but mobb deep can go head and finish themselves already…music fans have enough dope music to remember them by…

Dog, save that sentimental crap for someone who deserves. Steph’s fall from grace has been solely his doing. He has no one blame but his dumb ass self.

now that’s how you do a highlight reel. Much better than that stackhouse shit.
I forgot how nice he was. All you hear about is how much better his team gets when he leaves.
I never noticed how much he kicks his feet when he shoots.
Damn shame tho, he had talent AND skill (which you don’t see much these days) but his mindset let it go to waste.

AY says:
At one point when marbury got traded for jason kidd, I actually bought into the hype that he was this great player suffering on a bad team, having to carry the injury prone players like jayson williams (the killer), kerry kittles and keith van horn, and thought that he was going to turn it around when he got to phoenix. But then I started watching the games instead of watching highlights, and realized that
- he thinks he’s better at passing and shooting than he is
- he doesn’t play harder when he’s losing
- he doesn’t know how to run a team as the PG
So I cannot agree that he is more talented at the PG position; part of that talent is knowing how to keep your teammates involved and keep your teammates wanting to play actively, and knowing how to not go through the motions. I’ve seen players have that, they usually have that when they come into the league, that’s probably the most important talent a PG need to have, the mental part. He cannot be a PG, if he was the PG that team will always have problems digging themselves out of a hole in any game, and he will personally stop trying if he deems the game out of reach. He is similar to Allen Iverson, but didn’t have someone with the vision to put him at the SG spot where he’d be more effective in less of a leadership role. In comparison, Andre Miller is more naturally talented to be a PG than him; Stephon Marbury is a misused player who will always be labeled as a loser.

On a side note, a friend of mine and I always argued who was the better point guard - Steve Francis or Stephon Marbury; coicidentally, they landed on the same team and well… that debate was never settled…
They both really stank it up after playing for the Knicks.

Steph was and still is my dude i saw him light up paul robeson h.s at the garden and i was sold,i even patterned most of my game from him, literally i stole his shytt.Having the oppurtunity to talk to him on several occasions i came to conclusion, he is a man with a good heart and undeniable talent, but he is just not very smart..and that has made the media and fans alike seriously dislike the dude for no real reason just because he has said some harmless dumb shytt. no matter how much charity/community work he does…the media has really got to people…it’s funny how fans will support a dude with a similiar game but less talent like jason terry or barbosa but throw steph under the bus…

I think Marbury could resurrect what is left of his career if he agreed to move to shooting guard. The guy can score, but he’s never had a point guard’s mentality.
September 16th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
AY says:
@CGF
I never said marbury wasn’t a good passer; he just thought he was a better passer than he is. He makes these high risk passes when he isn’t dribble penetrating with his great handles, and even if no one intercepts the passes a lot of times it’s too hot for the guy catching it. If he would make simple passes and let other guys start the offense and stick with his strengths, he would be as respected as AI.

well… with all due respect, steph’s got the talent, the skills, the quality… it’s just that, man, he wasn’t able to find the right fit…
…yeah, after bein from ’sota to nj to ‘zona to nyk, it could be an argument - but look at steve francis: after traded out of houston, he bottomed-out like shit, he can’t find a system who’d let him mixtape for 20 seconds and attack the remaining 4 (yeah, rudy t let’s him do it about 80% of the time)… same with starbury…
…yet, if he has any chance of reviving his career, it’d be now - on a defenseless system by d’antoni, where he lets his point (nash) zigzag all over the court and create, create & create…
…im no mark, nor a hater, but if he ain’t makin’ it this year, call the the latter…

and not that steph mixtapes it for 20 seconds… it’s just he’s not been given the liberty to create, attack and run the system fully… dude’s an underrated passer, by the way…

This was probably one of the best written posts on here ever since I started reading this blog daily. It’s partly because I’d sign almost every word you’ve put in this comment. It’s really hard to see someone you looked up to so much fall this fast. He obviously had all the talent in the world. He had the talent to become what he claimed to be already: the best Point Guard in the NBA. Even despite losing with the teams he’s been with. Judging individually there was no one better but those times seem long gone and to be honest, I’m being pessimistic about his basketball future. I don’t think he’ll be able to restore what he’s once been. I hope he proves me wrong.

Starbury is very talented, but talent only means you have potential if you don’t work hard to realize that potential well then you end up like Starbury. Great talent no real success to show for it. I wish he would get his head on straight for one season and shut up the critics, but that’s a lot to hope for.

Zhi Wong says:
I feel sad for Stephon as he could be a Steve Nash or a Tony Parker right now. Problem is, he spends too much time feeling miserable and misunderstood so it’s a bit hard to feel empathy for him because he’s caused much of his own misery through his bad attitude. He has dealt with a lot of difficult stuff but again, who hasn’t. At some point, you got to say ”get yourself together or retire”. The other thing is that he HAS to get out of New York, this team is killing him. The New York Knicks are a cemetery.
