The 15 Best Players in the NBA
Chris Paul (photo. Chad Griffith)Last week, when I previewed the New Jersey Nets ‘08-09 season, I unintentionally started an argument by calling Vince Carter “one of the 15 best players in the League.” Some people agreed with my assessment — which admittedly was made at the spur of the moment — while some thought that was way too high to rank Vince. As Dime reader Dagwaller put it, “There are probably five players in the ATLANTIC better than VC.” Nick had a pretty what I felt was the best response: “VC is a top 15 talent, but not a top 15 player.” And Phil politely asked, “VC a top 15? Are you out of your mind?”
Well, no. At least I didn’t think so last week. But I took the weekend and gave it some thought, and from that I put together my current list of the 15 best players in the NBA:
1. Kobe
2. LeBron
3. Duncan
4. Chris Paul
5. KG
6. D-Wade
7. T-Mac
8. Dwight Howard
9. Iverson
10. Paul Pierce
11. Dirk
12. Tony Parker
13. Deron Williams
14. Steve Nash
15. Amare
By my count, Vince lands somewhere in the 20’s; not bad by any means, but as stated before, lower than where his talent should have him.
What does your Top 15 look like?

so lets put this in a simple way
u rate

And in terms of the Nets as a team…
Probably the number 1 reason VC doesnt get dap
(despite two consequetive playoff wins before this year)
The Nets were shit. Yes. What would they have been without vince? Much Much Much worse… how worse?
VC makes the 3RD HIGHEST IMPACT in terms of on court/off court production (how well the team does with him / how they struggle without him).
http://www.82games.com/ONSORT6.HTM
So although the nets were shit, this has NOTHING to do with vince’s play. Vince has never been given a proper supporting cast in his many years in the NBA.
the blind, media-created hate is fucking mind boggling

Don’t stray from the point. Those are real numbers if you look at them with proper context. In vince’s case they are VALID because of his extensive PT, obvious leadership and importance to the team.

September 22nd, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Austin Burton says:
My list was primarily based on the question: “If I had to pick one guy to help me win one game, who would it be?” Normally in that situation I take Duncan #1, but after throwing in factors like overall skill, athletic ability, a little bit of the age/potential factor, ability to carry a team/win a game by himself, that was my formula.
September 22nd, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Big V says:
No, but they’re relative to the team that these guys play for. You can’t use them as a basis for a true comparison because the circumstances are all completely different from player to player.
The Nets were garbage last year. It’s not hard to come up with a big on/off court point spread when nobody else is getting buckets.
September 22nd, 2008 at 4:58 pm
T Dubbs says:
Duncan isn’t top 15 worthy anymore, sorry. They isolate TP on the wing when they need a bucket, or give it to Manu on the right wing, so he can slash in the lane with his left. (my opinion)
As for Pierce (the self proclaimed best player in the world), he was nothing without KG and Ray Allen. Ray Allen carried the Sonics, and KG carried the Wolves. Pierce was never impressive. (my opinion again)
I put Josh Smith as Top 15 because he’s one of the most complete players I’ve ever witnessed, and the dude is still young. I’m expecting him to have an outstanding career.
Don’t forget, this is all opinion. If we were going purely based off numbers, the list would obviously be alot different… I’m just looking at the whole picture from my perspective.

1)Kobe/Cp3 No other players are as directly responsible for WINS/LOSES like these two
2) Wade- I was going Lebron here but DWADE when healthy goes toe to toe vs anyone and delivers. His money when it counts (playoffs)
3) Bron- Most difficult player to guard unless he settles for jumpers
4) Duncan- starting to decline but still delivers when needed
5) TMAC-He’s probably one of the most unlucky players ever. Just when you think the team is ok, someone major gets hurt (him mostly) Check his playoff numbers and see how hard he works to get his team over the hump
6) KG- Consistently good, focused, and intense. What more could you want. On the perfect team for him
7)AI-never slows down and still as good today as he was his first few years in the League. People talk about freak athletes but he is by far the most freakishly athletic player in any sport 6′0 (generous) 165(generous) and gives everybody buckets
8)D-Will-I have him low in my opinion but the system hurts him. He could easily put up higher numbers and still pick up W’s
9) Yao-Best Center in the L. Howard can be minimized as evidence by the Olympics and Detroit. Yao is effective anywhere inside of 18 ft. Passing skills are nice for a big
10)Manu-I’d put him over Parker simply because he’s more complete. It was clear in the lose to the Spurs that they needed him and he couldn’t get it going due to the injury
11)PDouble- outside of Bron and Melo, most physically dominating sf in the league. He’s a true scorer
12) Melo- One the best scorers in the League. Offensively, top 5 easy
13)Bosh-Better than Amare and DWight right now, not as physically but more skilled than both
14)Agent 0-when healthy top 5 scorer as well. Can shot lights out
15)Dwight aka Superman-Once he gets a signature move and one solid post move he’ll be a force. As of right now, too many nights I’ve seen him neutrilized by solid defense

There is so much that goes into the “Best Player” debate. It is most dominant, based on all-around skill, physical talent, winning, toughest competitor or a combo of all? Combining ALL of the above traits, here is my contribution to the debate:

- Kidd - would have made the list two years ago
- Manu - wonder how good he would be on any team other than the Spurs, a “system” guy in my mind

1. Kobe (1-2 more year left at this position)
2. LeBron (very close Second, will remain #2 for a long time if kobe gets his Chip)
3. Chris Paul (Was best player on the floor vs. Spurs in playoffs)
4. Duncan (Slow declining, Era might be over)
5. KG (Always just as good as Duncan if not better skill wise, duncan gets nod for being the Man in close situation, should be thanking Pierce)
6. D-Wade (Did you watch the olympics, clearly the best on the floor, but can he keep it up for 82 games?)
7. Dwight Howard (3 more years top 3)
8. Paul Pierce (Always great player, took a chip to realize it
9. Iverson (Heart alone keeps him top 15)
10. T-Mac (Skill/talent wise should be top 5)
11. Dirk (Talent wise great, Heart wise fell off big time)
12. Tony Parker (Dude takes on all challeges, what PG has a better Resume)
13. Deron Williams (dude flat out plays, its the system that hold him back)
14. Yao-Might possible be best center…can’t seem to be healthy enough to take spot.

$filmoney$ says:
1. Kobe - Best player in the L on the strength of talent, skill, intelligence and he’s the most clutch player in the game, just ask Spain. (I hate the lakers)
2. Duncan - The most skilled big man in the game on offense and defense. Basically the Kobe of Big Men, also makes a lot of clutch buckets for a big man. (hate spurs)
3. LeBron - The most talented player in the world and the most physically imposing and dominant. Very good passer but his shot is shaky, bad FT shooter, and he’s up and down in clutch situations.
4. Deron Williams - Most underrated superstar in the L. He does everything great: ball handling, 3PT, on ball D, FT, running a team, is clutch with game on the line, close between him and CP3 but gets edge because he owns CP3 head to head. (I hate the jazz)
5. Chris Paul - Decent defender, best ball handler in the L, best runner of a team , improved his shot drastically,
6. D-Wade - Makes plays on D, dominant scorer and gets to the line, makes plays for others, clutch player, Turns ball over too much though
7. Paul Pierce - Proved he can defend, great shooter and scorer, can pass and rebound well for SF, not far from top
8. T-Mac - Great scorer, talented defender but not always committed, great passer, underrated clutch player
9. Amare - The most dominant big man in the L, the most talented big man in the L, he is the best player on offense in the L, blocks shots, gets lost on d too often,
10. KG
11. Dirk - great scorer and shooter, up and down in the clutch, decent rebounder, halfway decent on d,
12. Iverson - (My favorite player) great scorer and make plays for others but he can’t play d except passing lanes, turns the ball over and over dribbles
13. Tony Parker- quick, unstoppable in the lane, and can take over games, has also been dominant in the playoffs
14. Steve Nash - Terrible on D but is a great shooter, clutch, and everybody knows how well he passes
15. Dwight Howard - Most powerful big man in the game. Offense game is limited and is inconsistent on D.
I say i hate those teams and players to let you know i have no bias. I hate them but I don’t hate on them.

I’m sorry, but Duncan and KG should not be on this list. Obviously KG is a beast and has been great for a long time, but as we saw last year, he needs a Paul Pierce to win. As for Duncan, yeah he’s been post-season gold years ago, but if you’ve watched the Spurs last year (and even the year before when they won it all) it’s not because of what Duncan can do, but almost in spite of the fact that they have him.
Did you guys watch the Hornets/Spurs series? Duncan is closing in on suck, big time.
And just to stick it in there, I don’t think he has any heart. David Robinson, Ginoboli definitely, Duncan: N-O.

Man, what a difference a finals makes. Paul Pierce is not a top ten player. He’s just not. And while he’s in the mix, he’s not a top 15 player in my book either.
He scores inside and outside, gets to the line, but things fall off from there. He was underrated as a defensive player before the playoff run, but he’s way overrated now post-finals (where, even in a good display for pierce, his deficiencies were pretty obvious). He’s a decent but not premier passer. And his assist-to-turnovers is, again, good but not great.

KYLE says:
OK THE BEST PLAYERS FOR ONE ARE NOT ALWAYS ON THE BEST TEAMS OR EVEN THE MOST POPULAR…IN FACT MORE THEN HALF ARE ON THE THE TEAMS THAT EITHER DON’T MAKE THE PLAYOFFS OR JUST GET IN AND GET SWEPT IN THE FIRST ROUND….BY BEST PLAYERS I GO BY WHO’S DONE THE MOST DAMAGE IN THE TIME THEY HAVE BEEN PLAYING…NOT TO MENTION HOW THEY EXCEL UNDER PRESSURE, ADAPT ON DEFENSE AS WELL AS OFFENSE…AND WHO UNDERSTANDS AND PLAYS THE GAME WITH INTENSITY ON BOTH SIDES OF THE COURT EQUALLY.
MY LIST:
1.BRYANT
2.JAMES
3.CHRIS PAUL
4.GARNETT
5.D-WADE
6.T-MAC
7.PIERCE
8.DUNCAN
9.IVERSON
10.JOE JOHNSON
11.AMARE STOUDEMIRE
12.DWIGHT HOWARD
13.BILLUPS
14.BOOZER
15.BARON DAVIS
I WANT TO NAME SOME RUNNER UPS THAT I THINK IN A FEW YEARS CAN MAKE THIS LIST EASILY:
MICHAEL REDD, DANNY GRANGER, TAYSHAUN PRINCE, LAMAR ODEM, BRANDON ROY, MANU GINOBILI, JASON RICHARDSON, JOSE CALDERON, CHRIS BOSH, JAMAL CRAWFORD, RICHARD JEFFERSON, TONY PARKER, CARMELO ANTHONY, AND DAVID WEST….
FOR EVERYONE ELSE EITHER THEY ARE TOO OLD OR YOUNG, OR THEIR GAMES JUST DON’T REFLECT A PLAYER THAT CAN BE GREAT IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE GAME….THAT’S MY FINAL WORD….
