The Best Backcourt of the Last 20 Years: Round Two
Round one of our Best Backcourt of the Last 20 Years playoff sparked a serious debate between the four and five seeds in the Cousy Bracket. Which was a better backcourt, the ‘95-96 Gary Payton/Hersey Hawkins Supersonics or the ‘04-05 Suns’ combo of Steve Nash and Joe Johnson? Nash and Joe Jeezy needed every vote, edging one of the greatest defenders in NBA history by a margin of 20-19.
To his credit, our Executive Publisher, Jed Berger said last week that he thought that the Suns would be the sleeper of the tourney. Of every single team in this tourney, the Suns shot the ball as well from three as anyone else. But it’s tough to say that there’s any guard who impacted both sides of the floor like a 27-year old Gary Payton. Though he didn’t notch an MVP that season as Nash did, he did earn Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Check out how the rest of round one played out, and you’ll find the new field of eight down below. Vote in the comments section as always…

don’t wanna vote on the rest, simply because the initial seeding was so fucked up it’s ridiculous, but MJ would have a field day with parker/ginobili, on offense and defense. He’d single-handedly put those two into retirement.

that was my opinion and dime said it wasnt based if they played 2 0n 2 its how good they were within the context of a good team
and im sorry the spurs depended more on manu and parker since the bulls second best player was their sf
and even if it were a 2 on 2 u dont guard parker and again no one stops no one one on one when u r good offensively
and again that gap that bj vs parker has is to large for me if that kid had played for the kings back then no one would know him

bj was tough and he rarely made mistakes, and he did make it to an all star game in 94..The dude didn’t really have any gaps in his game his issue was that he was only good at everything not great at anything…the question of who means more to the team, who else could start there but bj really? no one else at that time could handle the ball and defend like him the rest of those guys on the bulls were just shooters and would get torched on d…even tough as nails paxson

KingBruin says:
Thomas/Dumars
Parker/Ginobili
Sorry, but if we’re talking about best backcourt… BOTH players really need to be strong, and BJ just wasn’t anything extraordinary… he can hold his own, but he wasn’t anything special. Any decent player matched with MJ might win a heads up battle, but that doesn’t make for a great backcourt, just a great MJ.
(and if they win this round, I’ll make the same argument next round)
Johnson/Scott
Porter/Drexler
Looks like the legends are winning out over the new school. AI, Kidd, Rip, and Ray Ray are already gone, Parker/Manu is the only legit hope remaining. Someone get LeBron an all-star PG already…

isiah thomas & joe dumars edge stockton & horny in triple overtime, with isiah callin’ a bullshit foul to send himself to the line to finish it off…(& by the way, i fucking hate isiah passionately).
jordan & b.j. oust parker & ginblowme by a score of 99 to 48…jordan would draw the inevitable double team & bj was unconscious from triple…anyone arguing that ANY backcourt could hang with these two are in denial and full of shit.
the magic-man & byron scott would defeat nashypoo & double j, but not nearly as easily as most would probably think due to size & athleticism differences…the final in this one would be somewhere around 139-125, lakeshow.
timmy & mitch-rich would oust t.porter & clyde “the ass-tro glide”" by 3 points, 104-101 in a nail-biter…in the end, the double edged offensive sword of tim & mitch would prove to be too much for porter & clyde…plus, i am almost positive that timmy would be in clyde’s head before the opening tip by talking mad dancin’ wif da starz -ish.
and b4 all y’all craka-ass’d-crackaz start whining like lil’ whores, i realize that this is not a straight up 2-on-2 tournament/contest, but i chose to discuss my choices in this fashion…my choices also took into consideration each pair’s success that year (and other year’s together), their abilities to perform in the clutch, & their collective impacts on the game…

got to go parker ginobili (this is the only one i will bother with) bj’s got nothing on parker, and the spurs are faster and while neither could guard jordan, the bulls cant keep up with the spurs.
then again it is not a 2 on 2. and once again i say WHY IS DIME NOT EVEN PICKING THE BEST YEAR FOR PARKER AND MANU? 06-07 those guys where better then 04-05 and i would put 06-07 parker ginobili against any back court. there is not a point guard that could handle parker that year, he was money inside and out and faster then them all. manu might flop his way to the line but he doesnt miss FT shots.

magic & byron – an awfully close one, but im giving it to mr. triple double 80’s
porter & glide – this would be a shootfest, glide over rock and utep 2-step over missile head… but toughness-wise, the gs crew aint got any to show for
