The Finals: Best Three-Point Shooters of the Last 20 Years
Ray v. RegIt’s the matchup that everyone’s been waiting for. Debate your hearts out – Reggie Miller versus Ray Allen in the finals as the greatest three-point shooter of the last 20 years.
But first, in round three, Miller completely destroyed Glen Rice. Some of you suggested that if it were Mr. Shuttlesworth facing Rice, then we’d have seen a much more hotly contested debate.
Nonetheless, no matter which way we cut it, it was bound to get to this point.
Here are the results from Round Three…
Larry Bird Bracket
1. Reggie Miller (48) vs. 2. Glen Rice (7)
Jerry West Bracket
1. Ray Allen (41) vs. 6. Dell Curry (13)
We’ll tally your votes in the comments section…
1. Reggie Miller – ‘87-’05: 18.2 ppg, 47.1% FG, 2560 3PM, 39.5% 3FG
1. Ray Allen – ‘96-present: 21.1 ppg, 44.6% FG, 2100 3PM, 39.7% 3FG

My opinion,
Reggie is one of the greatest clutch performers ever.
Ray is the best pure 3p shooter (ever). Although, obviously he has enoug other skills.
But still…I’ve got to go with Ray!

I’d take Ray based on his leg strength over Reggie, although Reggie had great endurance as far as moving without the ball. I also think Ray was a much better catch and shot player than Reggie over his career, while also being able to shoot off the dribble very well.

Ray Allen. He should catch Reggie in 3PM within 3 years, their percentage is identical, and he scores more. Plus he put on a show in the Finals. They’re both great, obviously.

Not only will he pass Reggie’s record, but he doesn’t have that whiny/flopping smudge on his game the way Miller did.

little known fact…
Reggie’s ears are actually equipped with sonar that help him line up the basket. That is the reason his ears are always pointed forward, toward the basket…to help judge the distance.
I go with Reggie.

hands down…reggie miller is the best shooter…dont get me wrong..rayray has a very sweet stroke and is probably the 2nd best shooter….why? simple…aside from hitting the most 3’s in NBA history….he’s always been clutch…using his clutch dagger 3’s to the break the hearts of opponents. that would be the extra points in reggie’s case. his killer instinct would be the KO in this discussion….rayray is good but has not been clutch…..and he isnt known as a clutch player.

You have to go with RayRay. If you stop to think about it, Reggie’s 3pt% has to be 2-3% inflated due to the fact he sold foul calls to the refs by kicking out his legs and by pulling down defenders on top of him.

I think the biggest thing here is who can create their own shot for a three and who had the biggest arsenal in how they used the three to there advantage.
Reggie most def. I would say wins here because if you look at them just being open to shoot, they both would be considered automatic. No one however, has ever used the pump-fake to draw fouls for threes, flopped, created his own shot often, and worked screens better than Reg.
While Ray is top notch, he doesn’t use all the tatics that Reggie possed which imo gives Reg. the advantage.

September 2nd, 2008 at 1:16 pm
dagwaller says:
Just a little something to chew on, for those that are going with “the most three point shots ever made”: Reggie made about 140 a season over 18 years, meanwhile, Ray has averaged 175 a season for 12 years. In other words, in 3 or 4 more seasons, Ray’s going to get that record. If he plays beyond that, he’ll end up blowing Reggie away.

@ GEE:
Are u crazy? Ray used the fact that he isn’t one-dimensional to get his three off. U had to respect the fact that if u crowded him, he was going past u and flushing one on ur center. U had to give him at least a lil space, and with his quick release of his that was all he would need.
Ray also had a better mid-range game, so you never knew where he was gonna shoot, he was good at everything, esp. when he was younger.
That being said, lots of people are forgetting this is strictly a 3 pt contest, so reggie’s flopping shouldnt go against him, or even how they got their threes off. Ray Allen is one of my top 3 fave players in the last 15 years. But I’d give this to Reggie. As much as Ray is that dude, if my life depends on one three point shot, reggie’s shooting it.
September 2nd, 2008 at 1:21 pm

@ post 38:
what do reggie’s averages look like in his first 12 years? You can only expect production to go down as you get older.
I also wanna throw in there, there’s really no bad choice out of these two. I would have had mark price higher though, maybe third.

exactly my point everyone has used excuses like d and moves against reggie
this is a three point game
and me allen didnt have a better mid range game not even close on the shooting percentages there
and another thing this isnt about who has the most shots made its quality peeps if some fool shooting 30% takes 10 threes a game he will brake the record also

Tai, let me break it down for you and for ian. Ray has a better 3 pt. percentage, and he did it while being every bit the first option that Reggie was. So how exactly is Reggie a better 3 pt. shooter? Because he’s more clutch (which I won’t argue)? HOW DOES THAT MAKE HIM A BETTER 3 PT. SHOOTER?!?! PLEASE explain that to me.
And also, production slips when you get older? So you’re telling me that the longer you’re in the league, the less able you are to shoot 3 pointers? Funny, because Ray had some of his worst shooting years when he was younger. His totals RECENTLY have been much more impressive. For example, I cited a 175 3FG made average for Ray. Last year, it was 180. At a pct. better than his career average.
Meanwhile, Reggie only made over 200 threes in a year ONCE in his career.
This guy is a legend in your mind, and for good reason, but when it comes to 3 pt. shooting, Ray Allen is better.

allen had to other player like him in milwaukee one in seattle and now that u posted he shot better than his career percentage guess what? he was the third best player on his team
so u cant say allen has been the clearcut first option like reggie has

Ian, Ray has a better percentage. Go ahead, look at the top of the link. It’s ok. I understand that this is a bit of a shock to all the Reggie fanboys out there, but however small the margin is, it’s there.
The reason other players aren’t this far is because none of them were as prolific as these two. I don’t hate Reggie Miller; he’s the second best 3 pt. shooter of all time, hands down. I just think that most people get caught up in his theatrics/dramatics when deciding who the best 3 pt. shooter is.
Yea. Sam Cassell and Glenn Robinson were good. But you’re telling me that Mark Jackson, Ron Artest, Chris Mullin, Brad Miller, Jermain O’Neal, Detlef Schrempf, Rik Smits and Chuck Person were all chopped liver? I guess instead of saying that they were both “clear cut” first options, I should have said that each of them had good players on their teams throughout their careers, so that isn’t an issue (with the exception of Ray’s Seattle teams and Reggie’s teams in the late 90s).

no i didnt say reggies teammates are chopped liver but he was the clear number one not sure about allen in milwaukee and def not in boston
dont answer with stupid sarcasm when u know u arent making any sense
“The reason other players aren’t this far is because none of them were as prolific as these two” hahahahahah have u seen the names on the list not as prolific comon man just let it go and admit it was dumb to say allen is better cuz he has a .002 higher percentage that hell prob lose when his career is over.

I believe that most of the “Jesus” votes are comin off the recent hype of the last Finals showing he gave (credit where credit is due) but Miller gets it done for me, even sans a Chip to his collection.

I feel as if people didn’t understand the question. It wasn’t who is your favorite three-point shooter, but the best. Ray-Ray may have the prettiest J of the past two decades, but Reggie has made more threes, and clutch threes, than anyone. That’s why Mr. Miller is the best.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:50 pm
frankie says:
Ian, I was trying to hold this back, but you’re an idiot. Ok, so let’s see how I can blow you away AGAIN, here.
Number of years Allen had 200 plus 3s in a season: 4.
Reggie? 1.
Playoffs? Playoffs?
Ray’s average is 42 percent. Reggie? 39. So…I guess what I’m trying to say is that Ray is a better 3 point shooter than Reggie, and the percentages prove it. Do you have anything other than claiming that I’m using “stupid sarcasm” despite the fact that I’ve obviously been putting up FACTS for the last couple hours? No, none of the other guys are as prolific as these two. Look up the word prolific – it describes these two perfectly vs. the other guys on the lists. And no, it’s not a .002 higher percentage. It’s .2 of a percentage point, and when you take into account the fact that Reggie played for 18 years, and Ray may well do the same, .2 of a percent of THOUSANDS OF SHOTS TAKEN is, although a small number, proof. I mean, what do you want? 1 million, or 1.02 million? Simple math here, Ian “the statboy”. Which one is higher?

dagwaller says:

No, dude, I read your posts correctly – you just don’t seem to understand facts when you see them. Ray has a better 3 pt. percentage in the regular season and the playoffs. He’s going to get that 3 pointers made record in a few years, barring a big injury. I’m not saying who’s a better player. I’m not saying who’s more clutch. The question was, who’s a better 3 point shooter? And over the course of a half dozen posts, I’ve put up fact after fact after fact supporting my point. You never seem to be able to put up very many facts supporting your’s. You attack me, and you lol a lot, but you simply can’t deny what I’m saying, because it’s all true. Check it out.

Ian, I see your point about the diminishing percentages. I’m not trying to say that .2 percent makes Reggie a bad player, and Ray great.
Like I said, though, Ray has a better percentage in regular season and playoffs, and will eventually get the most 3s of all time. The past three seasons, Ray has had one season above, one season below, and one season where he was only marginally above his career average. In other words, there’s no reason to think that he won’t continue to shoot at the same level for a few more years.

he could but most players dont and the prob is we cant count percentages to determine whos better now when we have thrown that out the window in some brackets

Ray Ray is just too pure. I think Reggie is the better all around and cearly more clutch player but if we’re talking strictly 3 point SHOOTING…it’s Ray.

frankie wow 3 posts without insulting each other
but if u read post 105 this is just a voting thing of who u really like the most cuz many here think allen is better all round but me and post 105 think its reggie
since the numbers are so alike why not give the edge to the one whos clutch and the face of a franchise
thats why i picked reggie but someone else mentioned that maybe the one picking allen are kinda young and didnt get to see reggie play in his prime

reggie. each and every single time.

Ha, good call on the insulting thing…
I kind of look at your last point like this. You are right in saying that some people are going to pick one guy or ther other for ANY category, and some are going to pick the other. For whatever reason. Maybe someone thinks Ray’s a better slasher. Some think Reggie’s a better defender. Pacers fans, young fans, old fans…all are probably represented here.
I just see a lot of evidence as to why Ray is, and will continue to be, historically, a better shooter from beyond the arc. Even if only by that slightest of margins.
Dime, is there any way we could re-post this 6 years from now? After Ray’s done?
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Ian says:
exactly
wow we agree on something
dime u better file this article somewhere so u can repost in 6 years
by then ull prob be adding some new faces but reggie and allen will still be on the list

me all the way up @ 41. First off I am crazy. Now that is done.
Sure Ray might have a better drive to the hole if you crowd him for the 3, I’ll give you that. You also said Ray had a better mid range game, and just for the sake I’ll give you that too.
STILL this is a 3 point contest as you said yourself. So driving to the hole and mid range game mean nuuuuttthhiin.
When it comes to the 3 though, no one in the L that I can recall used it or uses it in so many was like Reg.
It’s one thing to just be a great shooter of the 3. It’s totally another where you turn it into a weapon that can be used in multiple ways.
Call him dirty, call him a flopper or whatever, but dude was a master of manipulation. People’s favorite players got crucial fouls from Reg. knowing how to pump fake just right (take note Barry). Dude had fans of other teams screaming at the t.v. cause he could flop so well from 3. 4 point plays, check. Quick release, check. Swagger while doing it all, check. Running your favorite player guarding him ragged, check. Coming off screens and picks so well it was like he played under Sloan, check. I could go on.
Ray does some things really well, and is a more well-rounded or all around player than Reg. sure. But when it comes to shooting and using the 3 in different ways, he can’t touch Reg.
Reggie!

When it comes right down to it, in a pressure situation like a one-on-one contest, give me Miller. With Reggie you know the ball will go in when it has to, even if Allen’s form is probably a bit better.
