The Finals: Best Three-Point Shooters of the Last 20 Years

Ray AllenRay v. Reg

It’s the matchup that everyone’s been waiting for. Debate your hearts out – Reggie Miller versus Ray Allen in the finals as the greatest three-point shooter of the last 20 years.

But first, in round three, Miller completely destroyed Glen Rice. Some of you suggested that if it were Mr. Shuttlesworth facing Rice, then we’d have seen a much more hotly contested debate.

Nonetheless, no matter which way we cut it, it was bound to get to this point.

Here are the results from Round Three…

Larry Bird Bracket

1. Reggie Miller (48) vs. 2. Glen Rice (7)

Jerry West Bracket

1. Ray Allen (41) vs. 6. Dell Curry (13)

We’ll tally your votes in the comments section…

1. Reggie Miller – ‘87-’05: 18.2 ppg, 47.1% FG, 2560 3PM, 39.5% 3FG
1. Ray Allen – ‘96-present: 21.1 ppg, 44.6% FG, 2100 3PM, 39.7% 3FG

    My opinion,
Reggie is one of the greatest clutch performers ever.
Ray is the best pure 3p shooter (ever). Although, obviously he has enoug other skills.
But still…I’ve got to go with Ray!

  2. Raps FAN says:

    JESUS SHUTTLESWORTH!

  3. Kudabeen says:

I’d take Ray based on his leg strength over Reggie, although Reggie had great endurance as far as moving without the ball. I also think Ray was a much better catch and shot player than Reggie over his career, while also being able to shoot off the dribble very well.

  4. shake&bake says:

Ray Allen. He should catch Reggie in 3PM within 3 years, their percentage is identical, and he scores more. Plus he put on a show in the Finals. They’re both great, obviously.

  5. Michorizo says:

I go with Ray, because I believe that Reggie is actually Cheryl Miller incognito.

  6. Prof. TX says:

    Ray Allen.
Not only will he pass Reggie’s record, but he doesn’t have that whiny/flopping smudge on his game the way Miller did.

  7. that's whats up says:

    little known fact…
Reggie’s ears are actually equipped with sonar that help him line up the basket. That is the reason his ears are always pointed forward, toward the basket…to help judge the distance.

    I go with Reggie.

  8. Flip says:

Definitely Reggie! Were talking 3 point shooters here, and Reggie is as good as they come

  9. IGP says:

I gotta go with Reggie on this one. Ray is obviously nasty, but Reggie earned this title.

  10. chekmate says:

    It’s Miller Time

  11. Detroit Dave says:

I gotta go with Ray Ray. Ray Allen is one of three (Kobe and Steve Nash) players in the league that when he shoots, everytime it leaves his hand I truly believe the ball is going in!

  12. Kevo says:

    Reggie Miller!

  13. Tha Boddy says:

WWJD??? He would destroy Reggie”Miller Time”
    Go Jesus!!!

  14. loganlight says:

If this were a battle for best clutch 3 point shooter, if would easily go to Reggie… sadly it’s not.

    Ray Allen.

  15. Slickrick says:

ditto post 11, seriously, when ray shoots that shit, u just feel like its going in from any angle u look at it … damn! ray hands down!!

  16. rodnets says:

Ray Ray, but Rice should have been the champion. He was money, and didn´t have the hype of Reggie or the Highlight Film of Ray.

    Rice 4 threeeeeeeee.

  17. lukepo says:

    ray ray

  18. maeng says:

hands down…reggie miller is the best shooter…dont get me wrong..rayray has a very sweet stroke and is probably the 2nd best shooter….why? simple…aside from hitting the most 3’s in NBA history….he’s always been clutch…using his clutch dagger 3’s to the break the hearts of opponents. that would be the extra points in reggie’s case. his killer instinct would be the KO in this discussion….rayray is good but has not been clutch…..and he isnt known as a clutch player.

  19. Rod says:

    the champion aka ray allen

  20. Ansonious says:

    reggie

  21. Arnold Palmer says:

gotta giv it to ray hez jus a better overall player I believe he waz the first pure shooter with legitimate athleticism nd the skill to take u the the rack anytime…..nd b4 he got too old he waz good for a couple posters on those solid buckz teams

  22. JA says:

You have to go with RayRay. If you stop to think about it, Reggie’s 3pt% has to be 2-3% inflated due to the fact he sold foul calls to the refs by kicking out his legs and by pulling down defenders on top of him.

  23. YGB (Obama 08) says:

    Reggie
    Ray

  24. Cincy says:

I’ve got to go with Ray. This is no contest, all Reggie had was a jumper, that’s it! Ray can do it all, and Reggie should lose some respect for flopping instead of playing D

  25. nowwhatyo says:

    walter ray allen

  26. SparkyJ23 says:

Jesus fo sure but it’d be close

But if those cats from the 90’s could play against todays D instead of the smashmouth football that was the NBA Back then they’d have some crazy numbers MJ without the handcheck? i could see him put up 40 a game easy

  27. You know! says:

Walter Ray Allen! sweetest stroke to have played in the game. so effortlessly! and satisically he is on pace to take over any 3pt record reggie has! Jesus!

  28. marcus the great says:

“automatic wit the weapon like Reggie for Three!”

most feared shooter in the 4th quarter hands down
    reggie

  29. Miljan23 says:

    Ray Allen.

  30. GEE...Go Dawgs! Still #1 for now baby! says:

I think the biggest thing here is who can create their own shot for a three and who had the biggest arsenal in how they used the three to there advantage.

Reggie most def. I would say wins here because if you look at them just being open to shoot, they both would be considered automatic. No one however, has ever used the pump-fake to draw fouls for threes, flopped, created his own shot often, and worked screens better than Reg.

While Ray is top notch, he doesn’t use all the tatics that Reggie possed which imo gives Reg. the advantage.

    Reg!

  31. soitslikethat says:

Reggie – both an athlete and an entertainer. He was able to ring it up home and away.

  32. nick says:

    reggie.

  33. dagwaller says:

I like both of these players but, if it’s just 3 point shooting, I’m going to go with Ray Allen.

  34. Ian the statboy says:

    reggie easyyy
cant believe that stupid comments i hear on allens favor
like hes better overall hes better on D who gives a fuck is shooter and thats it
allen scores more someone said yeah he shoots more a lot more than reggie so he has to score more even if reggie has a higher percentage
reggie can hit the three pointer anyway he takes it falling down , over anyone u name it
besides if it were a game winner no coach would ever give allen the ball over reggie not even allens father

allen cuz he can do more on D lol gtfoh
    reggie easy

  35. Jah says:

    He.Got.Game.

(that means I’m voting for Ray Allen, baby!)

  36. Ian the statboy says:

    lol @post 24 u kidding right?

  37. bsteezy3 says:

REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! Forget the stats…this guy always seemed to come through in the clutch. That counts for a lot with me…how many game winners can you think of Ray Allen hitting? Whatever number you came up with, compare that to how many game-winners you’ve seen Reggie Miller hit… All-time great…

  38. dagwaller says:

Just a little something to chew on, for those that are going with “the most three point shots ever made”: Reggie made about 140 a season over 18 years, meanwhile, Ray has averaged 175 a season for 12 years. In other words, in 3 or 4 more seasons, Ray’s going to get that record. If he plays beyond that, he’ll end up blowing Reggie away.

  39. bsteezy3 says:

BTW, some of you guys are clearly “stat-geeks”… Stats are ok, but they shouldn’t be the complete basis of your decision making…

  40. Scott says:

Jesus, its a close one, but ya, Ray Ray gets his on this one.

  41. me says:

    @ GEE:

Are u crazy? Ray used the fact that he isn’t one-dimensional to get his three off. U had to respect the fact that if u crowded him, he was going past u and flushing one on ur center. U had to give him at least a lil space, and with his quick release of his that was all he would need.

Ray also had a better mid-range game, so you never knew where he was gonna shoot, he was good at everything, esp. when he was younger.

That being said, lots of people are forgetting this is strictly a 3 pt contest, so reggie’s flopping shouldnt go against him, or even how they got their threes off. Ray Allen is one of my top 3 fave players in the last 15 years. But I’d give this to Reggie. As much as Ray is that dude, if my life depends on one three point shot, reggie’s shooting it.

  42. me says:

    @ post 38:

what do reggie’s averages look like in his first 12 years? You can only expect production to go down as you get older.

I also wanna throw in there, there’s really no bad choice out of these two. I would have had mark price higher though, maybe third.

  43. Ian the statboy says:

    me
exactly my point everyone has used excuses like d and moves against reggie
this is a three point game

and me allen didnt have a better mid range game not even close on the shooting percentages there

and another thing this isnt about who has the most shots made its quality peeps if some fool shooting 30% takes 10 threes a game he will brake the record also

  44. Ian the statboy says:

and how can you guys mention allen scores more when reggies twilight years have already been avg out allen hasnt so we dont know where hell end up
and a 40 year old reggie is still better in the playoffs than this allen

  45. the haters POV says:

    JESUS!!!!!!!

  46. loot says:

    ray allen.

    ray allen

  47. me says:

    @#44:
Exactly. That’s why i said throw reggie’s average only from his first 12 years up, then compare.

Although ill take allen today over reggie today, only because allen will play a lil d, reggie can’t at his age. But offensively, yeah allen was off this year so i’d take reggie, but i think that was an anomaly. he’ll be back next year.

  48. tai says:

    reggie

  49. Ian says:

    yup
people here seems to think we are comparing players overall

  50. ERIC says:

prettiest jumper in the L, silky smooth, dead-eye assasin.

    your winner is Ray Allen

  51. Chill says:

reggie…its miller time, one of hte best clutch shooters in the game

  52. odry says:

first time reader here and a knicks fan but its miller time

  53. Eric says:

reggie. hands down. dood could fill it up.

  54. dukesman2000 says:

    Reggie Miller

  55. frankie says:

Ian the statboy, you are a hypocrite. On the one hand, you tell everyone that this is JUST a 3 pt. contest. Then, when people point out that Ray is a better shooter than Reggie, you say, “omfg well dood u cant 4get that reggee wuz beter in teh playoffz!!!!111!” So, which is it? Is it that Ray is a better 3 point shooter, so he wins? Or is it that he’s a more complete player…so he wins?

    btw Ray for the win.

  56. Ian says:

he was a better shooter in the playoffs is what i meant

  57. Ian says:

frankie i didnt say contest u fool i said it was bases on the three point shooting of the players not D and moves and handles like everyone is sayin

  58. it aint easy being green says:

    shugar ray allen!!!!

reggie’s ethiopian ass would have had a chance if this was a hypothetical boston marathon, but its not. in 3 years, ray-ray will have the 3pm record and that will be that. sorry floppy.

  59. loc says:

    Reggie!

Because he was clutch and straight up carried a team for 15 years.

Ray has a sweeter shot though, in terms of just beautiful shooting stroke. Maybe the purest ever. Reggie could rip a teams heart out and feed it to a whole city though.

  60. tai says:

@55 so allen is a better shooter because you say so and hes better overall again because you said so
please fool (like someone called you) reggie is a franchise player

  61. youdontknow says:

    ray ray

  62. frankie says:

Tai, let me break it down for you and for ian. Ray has a better 3 pt. percentage, and he did it while being every bit the first option that Reggie was. So how exactly is Reggie a better 3 pt. shooter? Because he’s more clutch (which I won’t argue)? HOW DOES THAT MAKE HIM A BETTER 3 PT. SHOOTER?!?! PLEASE explain that to me.

And also, production slips when you get older? So you’re telling me that the longer you’re in the league, the less able you are to shoot 3 pointers? Funny, because Ray had some of his worst shooting years when he was younger. His totals RECENTLY have been much more impressive. For example, I cited a 175 3FG made average for Ray. Last year, it was 180. At a pct. better than his career average.

Meanwhile, Reggie only made over 200 threes in a year ONCE in his career.

This guy is a legend in your mind, and for good reason, but when it comes to 3 pt. shooting, Ray Allen is better.

  63. thaisito says:

miller of course. who s ray allen?

  64. FluffyG says:

    Gotta go with Reggie Miller.

  65. Ian says:

    frankie
    now i know u r kidding
better percentage 39% both of them
and how can u use that when there are guys in this tournament that shot with a higher percentage then why arent them in the finals

    the other part
allen the firt option like reggie whatttt
allen had to other player like him in milwaukee one in seattle and now that u posted he shot better than his career percentage guess what? he was the third best player on his team
so u cant say allen has been the clearcut first option like reggie has

  66. rathauneak says:

Miller is a legend and for the last shot of a championship game 7, I may….MAY go with Reggie for that shot. However, in a 3 pt contest…1 on 1 game, or any other situation, I MUST go with RAY ALLEN!

  67. J says:

    ray allen

  68. Ian says:

one more thing about your percentages frankie if u gonna use totals since reggie and allen shoot the same and reggie has a slightly better percentage in the playoffs than allen if u avg everything isnt reggies percentage better
    answer YES
so i guess hes a better three point shooter

  69. bsteezy3 says:

    REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE! REG-GIE!

  70. mario says:

this is easy ones a legend the other is a good player
    reggie all day

  71. E says:

    Miller time

  72. sweetv0mit says:

if you’re team is down by 3 with 2 seconds left and you have reggie and ray in your team who you gonna pick to take the last shot? DEFINITELY reggie… ray-ray is good but miller is great… reggie has definitely proven that he can shoot the 3 lights out INCLUDING the playoffs… so reggie all the way!..

  73. bigdoggchad says:

    Ray-Ray

  74. frankie says:

Ian, Ray has a better percentage. Go ahead, look at the top of the link. It’s ok. I understand that this is a bit of a shock to all the Reggie fanboys out there, but however small the margin is, it’s there.

The reason other players aren’t this far is because none of them were as prolific as these two. I don’t hate Reggie Miller; he’s the second best 3 pt. shooter of all time, hands down. I just think that most people get caught up in his theatrics/dramatics when deciding who the best 3 pt. shooter is.

Yea. Sam Cassell and Glenn Robinson were good. But you’re telling me that Mark Jackson, Ron Artest, Chris Mullin, Brad Miller, Jermain O’Neal, Detlef Schrempf, Rik Smits and Chuck Person were all chopped liver? I guess instead of saying that they were both “clear cut” first options, I should have said that each of them had good players on their teams throughout their careers, so that isn’t an issue (with the exception of Ray’s Seattle teams and Reggie’s teams in the late 90s).

  75. frankie says:

Ian, since when have playoff totals counted? Answer NEVER. Should we go back and count their college totals? How about pre season? Maybe high school, too?

  76. Ian says:

frankie lol .397 .395 reggie yeah sure allen is better hahahah what i said made sense about avg all the threes they made in the nba and its not even fair how reggies owns allen
the reason i posted this is because u said theres a diff in those percentages and there isnt
no i didnt say reggies teammates are chopped liver but he was the clear number one not sure about allen in milwaukee and def not in boston

dont answer with stupid sarcasm when u know u arent making any sense
“The reason other players aren’t this far is because none of them were as prolific as these two” hahahahahah have u seen the names on the list not as prolific comon man just let it go and admit it was dumb to say allen is better cuz he has a .002 higher percentage that hell prob lose when his career is over.

  77. yourdribbleizcookiez says:

Reggie Miller, its really not even that close to me, Reggie made a Career of showcasing his deadeye aim in overwhelmingly clutch situations. Mr. Daggers has made fishfood of all our favorite teams at one point or another with that stroke, and if you’re a Knick fan (sorry Spike) even moreso. I believe that most of the “Jesus” votes are comin off the recent hype of the last Finals showing he gave (credit where credit is due) but Miller gets it done for me, even sans a Chip to his collection.

  78. Ian says:

im with u on this one
its not even close (just my opinion)

  79. Luke says:

I feel as if people didn’t understand the question. It wasn’t who is your favorite three-point shooter, but the best. Ray-Ray may have the prettiest J of the past two decades, but Reggie has made more threes, and clutch threes, than anyone. That’s why Mr. Miller is the best.

  80. frankie says:

Ian, I was trying to hold this back, but you’re an idiot. Ok, so let’s see how I can blow you away AGAIN, here.

Number of years Allen had 200 plus 3s in a season: 4.
    Reggie? 1.

    Playoffs? Playoffs?
Ray’s average is 42 percent. Reggie? 39. So…I guess what I’m trying to say is that Ray is a better 3 point shooter than Reggie, and the percentages prove it. Do you have anything other than claiming that I’m using “stupid sarcasm” despite the fact that I’ve obviously been putting up FACTS for the last couple hours? No, none of the other guys are as prolific as these two. Look up the word prolific – it describes these two perfectly vs. the other guys on the lists. And no, it’s not a .002 higher percentage. It’s .2 of a percentage point, and when you take into account the fact that Reggie played for 18 years, and Ray may well do the same, .2 of a percent of THOUSANDS OF SHOTS TAKEN is, although a small number, proof. I mean, what do you want? 1 million, or 1.02 million? Simple math here, Ian “the statboy”. Which one is higher?

  81. dagwaller says:

    Jeez. Wow.

Ok, I’m a Ray voter here, but frankie…wow.

Anyway, Luke, I think you are right, but are coming to the wrong conclusion. A lot of people love Miller because he’s just a lovable character, but if you look at the facts, Mr. Allen is actually the best.

  82. Ian says:

lol frankie u must be crazy
.397 to .395 is the same shit
u can post here im an idiot all u want but man u must be the dumbest fuck ever to touch a computer

  83. Big V says:

    Ray takes this one.

  84. Ian says:

frankie im sorry i dont like to insult retards but u posting some bs like allen has been the man on his teams and thats hes a better player because u said so
pissed me off i got nothing against retards like u

  85. Big V says:

    @ Frankie,

Don’t bother arguing with these buffoons. You hit the nail on the head when you say that people get caught up in Reggie’s dramatics.

  86. frankie says:

You’re calling ME a “dumb fuck” when you’re the one claiming that two different numbers are actually the same.

And no response to any of my points (again)? Do you even have arguments, or do you just call people names and hope that they go away?

  87. frankie says:

Seriously, Big V – I’m a retard, I use stupid sarcasm, and I’m a dumb fuck. Is there anyone out there that can restrict people trolling like this? Just trying to post some facts and I get attacked…

  88. Ian says:

and lets see if u can understand the reggies .395 is a number that wont change what makes u think that allens is gonna stay at .397 (lol u claimed it was .2 higher but ok)
when all the players decline in percentages? andd pleaseeeeee dont answer me with something like allen is ahead right now cuz thats what counts cuz alot of people here are sayin the in 4 years allen wild hold the record isnt that assuming also?

and a better player allen is not miller is a top 50-60 player ever

  89. Ian says:

and no frankie u didnt get attacked u were the one posting stuff about my post when clearly u didnt read it right

  90. Ian says:

what was it hypocrite was it not?

  91. thaisito says:

wow frankie you started all this bs with your post and your were the one that made the mistake

  92. frankie says:

.2 of a percentage, Ian – there’s a difference, just so you know.

No, dude, I read your posts correctly – you just don’t seem to understand facts when you see them. Ray has a better 3 pt. percentage in the regular season and the playoffs. He’s going to get that 3 pointers made record in a few years, barring a big injury. I’m not saying who’s a better player. I’m not saying who’s more clutch. The question was, who’s a better 3 point shooter? And over the course of a half dozen posts, I’ve put up fact after fact after fact supporting my point. You never seem to be able to put up very many facts supporting your’s. You attack me, and you lol a lot, but you simply can’t deny what I’m saying, because it’s all true. Check it out.

  93. frankie says:

    What mistake, thaisito?

  94. Dronez says:

    JESUS!!!!

  95. thaisito says:

lol dont listen to thaisito he works with me hes like ill help u out

  96. MC3 says:

Reggie from three, although Ray would get the nod if this were about better player overall.

  97. dagwaller says:

    Ian is secretly Cheryl Miller

  98. Ian says:

sorry frankie post 95 was me post 91 was a coworker that used my pc hehehe

  99. HugotheHornet says:

Go with Reggie. Remeber him taking down the knicks and almost taking Jordan’s Bulls to game 7 when he hit some clutch 3’s in that series.

  100. Ian says:

i dont like insulting anyone and i dont know u so i cant insult u but u took my post as is i was trying to talk about a contest which i wasnt

  101. Ian says:

but i do think that small dis in percentage allen will lose at the end if he plays well into his twilight years

  102. Ian says:

    dagwaller
    shhhhh dont tell nobody

  103. frankie says:

Ian, I see your point about the diminishing percentages. I’m not trying to say that .2 percent makes Reggie a bad player, and Ray great.

Like I said, though, Ray has a better percentage in regular season and playoffs, and will eventually get the most 3s of all time. The past three seasons, Ray has had one season above, one season below, and one season where he was only marginally above his career average. In other words, there’s no reason to think that he won’t continue to shoot at the same level for a few more years.

  104. Ian says:

he could but most players dont and the prob is we cant count percentages to determine whos better now when we have thrown that out the window in some brackets

  105. SayItAintSo says:

Ray Ray is just too pure. I think Reggie is the better all around and cearly more clutch player but if we’re talking strictly 3 point SHOOTING…it’s Ray.

  106. Ian says:

frankie wow 3 posts without insulting each other
but if u read post 105 this is just a voting thing of who u really like the most cuz many here think allen is better all round but me and post 105 think its reggie

since the numbers are so alike why not give the edge to the one whos clutch and the face of a franchise
thats why i picked reggie but someone else mentioned that maybe the one picking allen are kinda young and didnt get to see reggie play in his prime

  107. Grizz says:

    Allen FTW!!!

  108. wowzers says:

it’s like me said, if your life depended on it, who would you want to shoot?
reggie. each and every single time.

  109. frankie says:

Ha, good call on the insulting thing…

I kind of look at your last point like this. You are right in saying that some people are going to pick one guy or ther other for ANY category, and some are going to pick the other. For whatever reason. Maybe someone thinks Ray’s a better slasher. Some think Reggie’s a better defender. Pacers fans, young fans, old fans…all are probably represented here.

I just see a lot of evidence as to why Ray is, and will continue to be, historically, a better shooter from beyond the arc. Even if only by that slightest of margins.

Dime, is there any way we could re-post this 6 years from now? After Ray’s done?

  110. Ian says:

    exactly
    wow we agree on something
dime u better file this article somewhere so u can repost in 6 years
by then ull prob be adding some new faces but reggie and allen will still be on the list

  111. Ian says:

this are prob the two most similar players ever
i mean the numbers style they play everything

  112. Ian says:

sorry first word of my last post is “these” not “this” right? dont make fun english is not my first language hehe

  113. KingBruin says:

    Reggie Miller

  114. GEE...Go Dawgs! Still #1 for now baby! says:

me all the way up @ 41. First off I am crazy. Now that is done.

Sure Ray might have a better drive to the hole if you crowd him for the 3, I’ll give you that. You also said Ray had a better mid range game, and just for the sake I’ll give you that too.

STILL this is a 3 point contest as you said yourself. So driving to the hole and mid range game mean nuuuuttthhiin.
When it comes to the 3 though, no one in the L that I can recall used it or uses it in so many was like Reg.

It’s one thing to just be a great shooter of the 3. It’s totally another where you turn it into a weapon that can be used in multiple ways.

Call him dirty, call him a flopper or whatever, but dude was a master of manipulation. People’s favorite players got crucial fouls from Reg. knowing how to pump fake just right (take note Barry). Dude had fans of other teams screaming at the t.v. cause he could flop so well from 3. 4 point plays, check. Quick release, check. Swagger while doing it all, check. Running your favorite player guarding him ragged, check. Coming off screens and picks so well it was like he played under Sloan, check. I could go on.

Ray does some things really well, and is a more well-rounded or all around player than Reg. sure. But when it comes to shooting and using the 3 in different ways, he can’t touch Reg.

    Reggie!

When it comes right down to it, in a pressure situation like a one-on-one contest, give me Miller. With Reggie you know the ball will go in when it has to, even if Allen’s form is probably a bit better.

People that are voting for ray allen obviously know nothing about basketball.
