Which Kicks Are Right For You?
LeBron V’s weigh 542 g on averageHonestly, I hate to admit it, but I’m one of those guys. Every time I lace up a new pair of basketball kicks in a sneaker store, I’m that dude bouncing around the store, cutting in between the tee-shirt racks to test the new footwear.
“My man, you know how much these weigh? They feel like they’re about 14.6 ounces.”
But there is good news for people like me. I don’t need to bombard my sneaker salesman with these questions anymore, as I can check the “Weightionary” guide thanks to the folks at NikeLeBron.net. They’ve got a pretty comprehensive list of all the LeBrons and some of Nikes other most popular hoop kicks, categorizing them as Heavy, Normal, Light, or Feather.
And after referencing this chart, the first pair that I’m gonna go test is the Zoom Soldier II’s. They’re categorized as “Normal” here, but they’re on the light side of that label, weighing in at 507 grams on average.
The lightest LeBron that you could play in is the original Zoom Soldier, which weighs in at 497.5 grams on average, but I remember that pair cutting up my heels.
Outside of the ‘Bron family, the Hyperdunk is far and away the most feathery of the Feather category – it’s 388 grams is unheard of. And surprisingly, the one pair that I’m going to stay away from on the court is the Nike Foamposite – though the name would make you think that you’re playing on air, they’re 557 grams.
Check out the whole chart HERE.

i had some all black nike flight’s back in 94-95, those were the lightest bball shoes i’ve ever played in- even to this date. The hyperdunk’s feel close to being as light, but they’re much uglier than the flights i had. Wish i could find em again.

One word: HYPERDUNK.
It is easily the greatest basketball performance shoe ever. They are strong and light as hell.

Katz, I’m the same way! And it just so happens that when I get to grab that new pair I’m on the way home from the office… so there I am in my slacks and tie running callistetics in the aisles at Finish Line. Yep, it looks that funny.
The Zooms are nice. I got them when they first dropped and I’ve picked up 2 pair since. Maybe not the lightest, but the most responsive shoe I’ve worn on the court.

Mark says:
Shoe performance is all arbitrary. I know everybody knows this, but Foamposite’s weight is due to it’s construction, essentially the closest thing to a custom shoe as you can get (granted, after breaking ‘em in).
Bron Bron’s new kicks (VI) are hailed as the lightest in the line by Nike. Don’t look like Flywire is implemented (a la Hyperdunks), but probably less upper cushioning or a lighter synthetic. Or just no gimmicks (i.e. foamposite tech). That always seems to work.
