Which non-NBA player do you most want to see in the League?
Randy Livingston (photo. NBDL)With so many NBA teams grasping at straws to solidify the point guard position — the Heat, Knicks, Warriors and Wizards immediately come to mind — normally I’d be left wondering why no one’s even considering giving Randy Livingston a shot. While preseason uncertainty makes for unproven names like Anthony Roberson, Dee Brown and Marcus Banks being thrown around, not even a tryout is mentioned in regards to Livingston, a 33-year-old veteran of over 200 NBA games with nine different teams and typically a lock to get at least a 10-day contract or two during the regular season.
I’m not saying Livingston would be anybody’s savior or that he’s starting material in the NBA, but for someone who fits the job description of a veteran backup PG almost perfectly — passing, protecting the ball, floor leadership, high basketball IQ, a positive locker-room influence, plus a wealth of experience — and who isn’t more than a domestic flight away, it’s remarkable how you never hear his name come up in the preseason.
I do admit I have a bias toward Livingston, who was the subject of one of my favorite and best-received Dime stories (Issue 32) and a genuinely good person who has the right perspective on basketball and its place in his life, but I’m not alone in thinking he’s long deserved a chance to succeed in the League. Before the ’07-08 season, when the Celtics were still unsure of their point guard situation with Rajon Rondo, Gabe Pruitt and Eddie House (at the time, some people thought Pruitt would actually be the Opening Night starter), one of the Boston fans in the Dime office repeatedly wondered aloud why Randy Livingston wasn’t at least brought in for an audition.
We all have players like that, personal faves toiling in the D-League, overseas, with AND 1 or on the playground who we’d like to see get a legit shot in the NBA before it’s too late — like the vocal pair of Syracuse fans at Dime who never let you forget that Gerry McNamara deserves an NBA job. Unfortunately, unless one team’s front office gets very proactive, it is too late for Livingston: he retired from pro ball last spring after leading the Idaho Stampede to the D-League ‘chip.
Which non-NBA player do you most want to see get a fair shot in the League?

I guess it will be repeat of last season for the exception of the Miami Heat; they ready are going to make some moves in the weak as water Eastern Conference.

Corey Homicide Williams should be on a team by now. he’s down to earth, connects with his fans, has skill, athleticism, he’s old enough to know what he’s doing but not so old that you’re afraid he’s gonna tear a hamstring getting back on D. I hope he sticks to a team soon.

Fred House in my mind is the hardest working most deserving player that deserves a shot in the L. He was the main player covered in the ESPN’s “Life in the D-League” program and was the NBDL’s inaugural rookie of the year with the North Charleston Lowgators. I had the opportunity to meet Fred when he played for the Adirondak Wildcats of the USBL. He was putting it down with a sweet J and hustling for every ball. The farthest he ever made it in the NBA was a training camp invite with the Hawks where he was given a shout out by Big Dog Robinson, at the time this could have been worth something. As a hard worker with a decent shot and great athletic ability, Fred House deserves to be someone’s 12th man. At this point in his career it is doubtful, but I figured he deserves some love in this post.
