(Almost) Daily Fantasy

There is a lot you COULD read into night one of the NBA Fantasy Season. Here is the question – what SHOULD you take away from last night. Don’t run to the waiver wire until you read this.

Travis Outlaw – Outlaw got the start last night over Nicholas Batum (who played FOUR minutes) and played very well. Would I run out and grab him? Probably not unless you have an obvious player to cut. Again, there are just too many players on that squad. That being said, SOMEONE in your league is going to get him, so if you’re a big believer, you’re going to have to act.

Tyrus Thomas – I liked what I saw of Ty Thomas last night (15 and 10). Playing a team high in minutes, Thomas looks like he could have a lot of double/doubles in his future and some decent block numbers. What was most encouraging to me was his ability to stay out of foul trouble. Last year, you’d blink and he’d have three fouls.

Drew Gooden –
Nice night from Gooden, who started at center (hello, potential eligablity). If you’re in a deep league, Gooden is probably owned. If you’re in a shallow league and Gooden has a chance at center eligabilty, he’s a nice pick up. Gooden has also made a career of being inconsistent though.

Charlie Villanueva –
Again, no need to worry too much about one night, but I‘ll say this – I warned against Chuck V. Two reasons why: 1. He has never been consistent. He has crazy talent but has always been up and down. 2. Scott Skiles. Bad hunch that Skiles won’t exactly love Villanueva. I’m not saying cut him or bench him, but I think he’s going to frustrate owners.

Ramon Sessions – So this one was a bad sign. When we wrote the sleeper preview for the magazine 6 weeks ago, we liked Sessions. If you’ve been following our coverage over the last two weeks, you’d know that as much as we liked him, at least for right now, Skiles does not. Sessions will get his chance at some point, he really will, but it won’t be right now. DNP-CD last night. He’s cuttable and we’ll keep an eye on him for you.

Rudy Fernandez – Last night was pretty consistent with what we’ve been saying about Rudy. He’ll find his way to 30 minutes and also find his way to fantasy stats. Last night? 16 points, 3 threes, 4 dimes and 2 steals in 29 (almost 30) minutes.

Greg Oden – The sprained ankle just looked bad, but I’ll say this – that could have happened to anyone with size 18+ feet. Don’t run out and sign Joel Pryzbilla or Channing Frye, but expect some nice production from LaMarcus Aldridge while Oden is out.

Leon Powe – Leon Powe (13 points) is one of my favorite players in the NBA but one of three things needs to happen for Powe to have legit fantasy value: 1. Garnett would need to get hurt. 2. Perkins would need to get hurt. KG would slide to the five and Powe to the four. 3. The 6-6 Powe would need to grow at least three inches.

Ray Allen – I’m not saying Ray is done or anything like that. Allen may have only scored 8 points, but he did play 40+ minutes. Here’s the thing – there are clearly more nights coming like this one. He’ll still have more good to great games than these but I thought it was concerning that Ray over and over tried to go right and turn the corner around defenders and really couldn’t.

Wow.. I really liked Rudy last night, except for those occasional unnecessary fade-away jumepers (one that missed everything). Believe he will gain starting PG nod over mehh Blake?

I believed in Azubuike going into the season, but does this warrant a drop for Rudy?

  2. tp says:

while monta is still out? keep azu

  3. jz_smoove says:

why the f$%^ wouldnt skiles like Sessions? dude at least a couple of 20/20s last year, so something special there. why not give it a go?

  4. QuEsT??? says:

rudy played great, and im sad for oden but ive got aldridge so more points for him! i have charlie V and yea it is fustrating cuz he has mad potential and can drop 30 on any night

  5. Spliff 2 My Lou says:

Why was Aldridge taking so many long jumpers? It was clank after clank. I hope he was just having an off night cause his shot was terrible.

  6. fallinup says:

Rudy was displayin’ just like when Spain played USA for the gold. He has some serious balls and is pretty friggin’ athletic. Will be keeping a close eye on him.

Oden was like a deer caught in the headlights.

  7. aj says:

Doc – I need your help!

I used your rankings in an auto-pick 12 manager head to head league. Here’s my team as I had the 11th pick.

    D Will
    Joe Johnson
    Steve Nash
    Josh Howard
    Marvin Williams
    Stephen Jackson
    Nick Collison
    Kendrick Perkins
    Jason Kidd – Util
    Rudy Fernandez – Util
    Daniel Gibson – BN
    Manu – BN
    Monta Ellis – BN

Clearly I need a center or three. On the waiver wire are: Maxiell, Shaq, Bargnani, Darko, Andray Blatche, ect.

Who do I drop and who do I add?

Who do I trade Steve Nash for?

  8. C-Hova says:

Should I drop Ronnie Brewer to pick up Ellis? Someone just dropped him, and thanks for your advice I already dropped Mccants for Arenas

  9. The Fantasy Doctor says:

    Doe Dumars,

I like Azubuike but not that much… YET.

  10. The Fantasy Doctor says:

    aj,

why the autodraft? the draft is the best part. Perkins and Gibson can be dropped. Pick up Shaq and Blatche. Don’t make any deals yet. wait for someone to come to you desperate for assists.

  11. The Fantasy Doctor says:

    C-Hova,

With limited bench spots having two injured players is very very hard and not too sustainable. I’d probably hold onto Brewer for now.

  12. dmitry of jersey says:

  13. MJAX says:

Wow, the Blazers were awful last night… Hopefully it was just the LA limelight… With that said,
I have Matt Barnes, do I drop him and pick up Rudy Fernandez?

  14. s.bucketz says:

wut happened to ramon sessions??he wasnt even on the roster for the bucks

  15. askkk 'bout it says:

    Fantasy Doc… gotta question:

    Rodney Stuckey or Rudy Fernandez?

They both look to play similar amount of minutes, though Rodney has been in the league and has the experience. Who would you give the nod to if you had to pick one of the two for your fantasy squad?

  16. kg fan says:

Are you still dealin out advice? how does my team look? 1st time doin a fantasy league
head 2 head, 12 team league

also james posey just got released, worth picking up?

  17. tim says:

    Asskkkk about it…

I’m not Doc, but I would say go with Rudy…I think he will provide more consistent numbers across the stats board…
I see the Pistons play all the time, I”m the biggest Pistons homer..but I think Rudy’s jumpshot is way ahead of Stuckey, as well as his 3 Point shoting ability… just my thoughts… Steals will probably be about the same, and i think Fernandez get a lil more rebounds…

You probably can’t go wrong either way though…

but what does the Doc think?
