Clip of the Day: 9 Year Old Ben Wilson

This 9 year old kid is a better football player than you. Ben Wilson will not only clean your clock, he will run through you. Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno are probably salivating as we speak…

Anyone else think it’s sad that the kid’s dad probably put together the mix tape to hype his 9-year old?

OK, first of all, I’m mad that this team of 9-year-olds has their names on the back of their jerseys. We didn’t have it so good when I was growing up.

Second, I played with a kid named Jeff Poke when I was nine years old. Poke was NASTY — on the scale of 9-year-olds, he was like Christian Okoye on O and Ray Lewis on D. Sorry, Ben Wilson is no Jeff Poke.

And on that note, third, this kid would have gotten eaten alive by the Rainier Community Center Eagles circa 1991. Sickest Little League football defense you’ll ever see. We might have gotten scored on three times all year. “Like bumblebees to honey,” as our coach used to say.

    Damn, I feel old.

  17. Taj says:

Yo… That kid can flat out play D! Fast.. and hits like a tonne of bricks for 9 YRs old. Hopefully whoever made the video also keeps him grounded so we’ll be seeing his name in a few years from now!

  18. weezy f says:

austin hatin on a 9 year old lmao

  19. Austin Burton says:

    Not my best moment.

  20. 2 Easy says:

lol Austin I kno its easy to hate on these kids nowadays but damn man ud swear he beat u up lol. This kid is a beast. Hes either THAT good or the other nine year olds are THAT bad. Either that was fun to watch

  21. Austin Burton says:

Not so much hating on the kid, more the hype surrounding the kid. I’ve seen better Little Leaguers who didn’t get their own YouTube highlight clip. If anything, it makes me wish I grew up in a different era.

  22. Jeffrey says:

    He’s gonna hurt somebody!!!!

  23. 2 Easy says:

Thats exactly the discussion surroundin White chocolate a couple days ago and trust me dude u were doin both. I kno the feelin cause I hate on every guy who ever got a look from high school football when my worthless school never even had a team. To this day it eats at me cause I kno I coulda been nice. I dont hate those guys but its just the way it comes out unfortunately

  24. Jim says:

If you think this kid’s dad is going to keep him grounded…

Also, kids who were stomping me in 7th and 8th grade were on the bench or drinking in the stands when I was holding it down under the lights, and I know a lot of yall had the same experience.

  25. E$ says:

he is sooo ready for Sunday! lol

  26. Desha Rashad says:

    Great Post.

Check out USC newest recruit. Word is he has a verbal with the school and he’s only 12.

  27. bballinca says:

Hype doesn’t mean a thing. Think Schea Cotton or Demetrius Walker. Once the rest of their age group catches up to them in size, speed and strength it becoems a different game.

  28. Lady Luck says:

I have six nephews who I have custody of who play little league football. One of them in particular is a flat out BEAST.

  29. Lady Luck says:

    ^^^^^ I wasn’t done with my thought….

Anyway, I plan to get him a youtube channel and put his highlights on there in hopes that maybe he can get some early looks. I stress to all of them that must be a model student first. But if they have the talent + education + support, I think they can be successful. Making these videos is merely a marketing tool in this very competitive arena. I’m hoping that he can continue to grow and excel as both a student and a player and that he will fulfill his dream of getting a football scholarship to play for the Buckeyes. I don’t think it’s a bad thing as long as you make sure that they don’t get too far ahead of themselves and to keep their egos in check. By the time he is college bound I will be ready to be his agent/manager to make sure that things go correctly and no one takes advantage of him. The competitiveness on the little league level is amazing. We have to watch who talks to him because coaches come from all over the city trying to recruit him to their teams. Guys sit on the sidelines and bet on games. Photographers show up to games taking photos of people’s children and sell them online. It’s crazy.

Oh, and our team will put the kids name on their jersey for $25.00

  30. Austin Burton says:

@Lady Luck — I agree, highlight clips for YouTube are just a new form of marketing, and we all know sports is a business, even down to the youth level. But damn, I wish I and some of the kids I played with had grown up in this era.

You guy should read “We Own This Game,” a very good book that delves into the world of Little League football, highlighting the good and bad parts.

  31. Lady Luck says:

Yeah but it’s tough. In the suburban areas. They have leagues with Team A and Team B which describe their playing abilities. For the right money you can get your kids a tryout for the elite or traveling leagues. You will spend hundreds of dollars for your kids to get coached by the best. I know 12 year olds with personal trainers. My boss at work has a former NHL player doing one on one coaching with his 9 year old son. There are HS level coaches who basically start developing players at the little league level so he already knows who he’s going to have on future teams. The competition is fierce!
