Super Sweet 17

Kevin GarnettKevin Garnett, Dime #45

If you thought the NBA Finals last June was a breathing Boston Celtics history exhibit, wait until tonight’s championship ring ceremony and the unveiling of the C’s 17th title banner. Remember the final minutes of Game Six, when there was approximately 400 people hovering around Boston’s bench just wanting to be close to the team when the win was official? There might be 30,000 people in the new Garden tonight with that same goal (and twice as many who will say they were there), and about 1,000 of them will be ex-Celtics. Forget the standbys like Bill Russell and Bob Cousy — we’re talking everybody from Rick Fox to Acie Earl to Kedrick Brown making cameos … After the ceremony and pomp and circumstance, the C’s have a game to play, with LeBron and the Cavs on the other side. We want to see how Mike Brown works with this roster; Cleveland’s small backcourt rotation (Mo Williams and Delonte West will be starting) is built for a faster pace, but then you’ve got to think about Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Ben Wallace dragging their bodies around. You need Z and Big Ben on the court for rebounding, and you especially need Z for his scoring in the paint, but in reality, the Cavs’ best lineup might be one where they go small and LeBron is playing the four, with Anderson Varejao at center … Like the Celtics, we’ve got our own unveiling: Dime #45, our NBA Preview Issue with Kevin Garnett on the cover, is in stores now. In addition to KG, we’ve got a couple great features on Elton Brand and Rudy Gay, plus our extensive 2008-09 NBA season preview where we predict just about everything that’s going to happen from Opening Night until the final day. We’ve also got the annual Player’s Ball NCAA preview and the high school Top 25, plus much more … Lakers vs. Blazers is tonight’s other national TV contest. All eyes will be on Kobe vs. B-Roy and Oden vs. Bynum, but the X-factors will be Portland’s other rookies, Rudy Fernandez and Jerryd Bayless (can any of L.A.’s point guards stay in front of him?), and how Phil Jackson uses Lamar Odom … Finally there’s the game everyone is destined to forget about tomorrow morning, Bucks vs. Bulls. We saw what Derrick Rose is capable of doing to Luke Ridnour for about five minutes last week before Rose got hurt, and it wasn’t cute. Then there’s the Richard Jefferson/Andres Nocioni dynamic (RJ don’t want none) and the possibility of Kirk Hinrich again throwing himself into the middle of some ish unnecessarily … Notable cuts from Monday: Rob Kurz in Golden State (only because it’ll now be awkward when he gets a few hundred All-Star write-in votes from China because of THIS), Coby Karl getting axed by the Lakers, and Patrick Ewing Jr. in New York. Don’t worry about Pat Jr., though. Remember, he’s got a spot on the Harlem Globetrotters waiting for him … Kobe on his ridiculous Guitar Hero ad: “I was just moving around like I was drunk.” Didn’t it look like there were parts in the ad where Kobe had a body double? A few camera shots looked like it was a noticeably smaller guy dancing for Mamba … The Fantasy Doctor wants some credit, and he deserves it. Yesterday he answered every single question thrown at him by the readers — requests that climbed into the neighborhood of about 200. If you missed the train yesterday but still need help with or advice on your fantasy squad, ask the Doctor RIGHT HERE … So you remember our recent in-house Grizzlies convert? He gave up less than a week in; now he’s rolling with the Pacers. See what you’ve done, Clay Bennett? People are confused out there in Seattle … FYI, now that the regular season is here, we’re going to be upping our output on DimeMag.com more than ever before. Every night when the games are going on, keep coming back to the site for regular updates so you don’t just have to wait for Smack the next morning … We’re out like The Legacy …

you guys over there are really standing alone now in the industry (based on the amount you offer and how much you’ve grown. I got my old mags still, stashed away. been through the resubscription process twice to no avail. never got my “ball till you fall dvd” and haven’t thought 3 times about it. whatever whatever though. It’s cool to see you all grow and be what you are today. keep up that hard work that everybody’s doing there…(if only Blaze magazine would have stayed could have stayed afloat too…who remembers that?)

portland/l.a should be interesting. i’m thinking that the blazers are going to win tomorrow.

will lebron try to destroy the celtics in boston or will everybody there still be in love with each other (you know how all the superstars seem to be friends with each other) by the time the game starts?

milwaukee might inexplicably (inexplicably because they are terrible) beat up on the bulls tomorrow…

also whats up with an electronic (subscribed to) version of the magazine for international humans…

    chicago bulls 2012-2013 champions…

  4. Craig says:

not to be a downer on doc’s parade, cuz he did do good…but theres 200 comments, and if he replied to every question, wouldnt that mean that he only answered 100 questions? not 200?

  15. steven says:

RIP CITY!!! There’s still time to convert Austin.

  16. it ain't easy being green says:

the worst thing Romeo can do to his career Is to step on the floor wearing hid dads ugly-ass kicks.

  17. GEE...America...Get Busy Humpty... says:

Somewhere Lil Bow Wow got to be hating, cause it was his real life dream to be in the NBA fa real wasn’t it, but dude didn’t grow.

Rome, depending on skill set and scoring and all, might at least have a chance or get up on a 10 day contract.

Make um say ugghhhh! Na naah Na Naahh!

  18. s.bucketz says:

Oh yea much love to Jennifer Hudson, just read that her lil Nephew I think it was, was found dead. Heart goes out to the girl. That is so much to have gone. Hope she hangs in.

  20. Mikey says:

I have to laud the Dime Mag contributors. I’ve been reading ever since they used to post on the MSN/Fox Sports website. They have posted every day regardless of whether it is the offseason, regular season, or postseason. That is why Dime Mag is my number one source for NBA info.

Also, great job by the fantasy doctor. I couldn’t even handle reading all of the comments posted, much less think about replying to all of them.

Thank you for all the work you guys put in!

  21. Jase says:

would anyone know what shoes KG is wearing in the magazine? can i get a link?

some sort of KG bounce mixed with something.

    thanks in advance!

  22. YOUNGFED says:

    @S.Bucketz
I heard he is starting. However you said it all with that Kanye statement. Out 4 or 5 songs heard all of them are unbelievably HORRIBLE and I’m a Kanye fan.

This is the newest buddens i’ve heard and its just aiight.

    http://www.xxlmag.com/online/?p=28204

    Gee
You kinda hatin’ on Romeo have you even seen dude play I’ve never seen him play a real game unless you count that celebrity bullsh*t. Give dude a chance he might be nice or he might be another Pat Ewing Jr. if you get my drift.

  23. Sho-Nuff says:

I’ve seen Romeo on the AAU circuit, nothing special. Average ball handler, average shooter, nothing really special. It’s well known that his father befriended Rozan and pumped him up (not that he needed it, kid can flat out hoop) and Floyd made the offer to both for USC just to get Rozan because he knew Mayo was one and done.

You can probably youtube some highlights of him throwing oops to Rozan. In the real world of basketball he’s not a USC worthy player w/o Rozan going with him.

PS…lots of teams put Master P on because of the hype factor, never had a real shot at making the league, he wasn’t athletic enough. I think he bought a CBA franchise or something and continued his career as player/owner or something stupid like that. But then again what’s a CBA franchise cost, $500?

  24. that's whats up says:

Dime, for Dime #50, are you going to shout out the best players to wear #50? I think the list would be David Robinson, and then that’s it…

  25. Gay4Rudy says:

So Master P is Lil Romeo’s Dad? This is fascinating news. Please expand on this topic so that I may take a nap without Ambien.

  26. dapro says:

    Dime

    That cover is crazy…….

Ready for the season, I’ve been putting it off but I’m coping the League pass and getting the HD package from Dish

Also, keep a rookie stat watch cause the 08-09 class is sick. No clear cut #1 but solid picks starting with my man DRose

  27. rodnets says:

    @smitty #7

He acts as if he was actually dancing in the video not a double.

    Other Kobes:

He “acts” as if he was a good teammate.

    That “Colorado” Motel incident.

  28. Spliff 2 My Lou says:

    @S.bucketz

I agree with you about Romeo taking a scholarship away from somebody who could really use it but I saw an interview with Master P awhile back and he said that Romeo was going to pay tuition since he could afford it and not take a scholarship. I don’t know if that’s true but that’s what he said.

Speaking of albums where the hell is The Chronic 2?

  29. K Dizzle says:

    # post 27

you really need to let that shit go.
If you don’t like watchin Kobe ball, then you with the wrong game.
Maybe go watch baseball players rollin with the slip-n-slide during their “world series”

  30. QuEsT??? says:

im soooooooooooo excited!!! i feel like its christmas eve.. great news about dime doing more posts and big ups to the fantasy doc he stayed true to his word

  31. QuEsT??? says:

damn melo is suspended??? no there goes the 10 win streak

  32. rodnets says:

    #post 29

I didn´t question Kobe as a player. He knows how to ball when he is not in “videogame mode”.

I think he is selfish and is full of crap. The way he pretends to be and how he blows up the first time he can is known.

I prefer a Lebron style “Im surrounded by incompetents and Im doing this myself” or Iverson style “gimme the ball and I shoot the hell out of it”

Not the facade he wants to create, being the nice guy smiling at Booyachick and pretends he likes what he really hates.

    PS. Baseball sucks

  33. sans says:

Big ups to the fantasy Doc….but i’m gone be pissed if Bayless does better than Ridnour this week….I cannot wait for tonight! GO CAVS!

  34. sans says:

Yeah DIME, big ups to you guys too. This sight is the only legit source for hoopheads daily need for random information and fifteen minutes of downtime. Thanks for relieving my daily stress….

  35. rell says:

I guess will be falling asleep at working tomorrow since I going to stay up and watch both game tonight. Who is going to start at point for Portland tonight, Blake or Bayless?

  36. dmitry of jersey says:
