Does your fantasy team need help? Ask the Doc.
With the NBA season a little more than 24 hours from kicking off, most of you should have had your fantasy drafts by now. So here’s the deal – in the comments section, drop me your roster and what type of league you play in (rotisserie, head to head, normal categories, keepers etc.). I’ll break down your team, tell you how you did in the draft, what categories you’re missing, and offer some suggestions of where to find those categories. Bring it on.

Yeah but it’s a 14 team league and I think you’ll be okay with assists as long as Ford stays healthy. Mayo was a good selection for your team. He’ll give you threes and assists. I also like the bench which is very impressive for the 14 team squad. Nice work. No moves to make right now.

The Fantasy Doctor says:
A lot of nice names, but also a lot of missing categories. You’re in major trouble in three’s. They really don’t exist on your squad with the exception of Raja Bell (who is a fringe starter). Wade and Butler will give you a little but you need help there badly. Blocks is also a legit issue. Chandler is a nice name but doesn’t block shots like you’d like him to. Williams and West don’t block shots either. You probably should start Noah over Brewer just for the blocks aspect. You’re strengths are probably the percentages and steals. You also lack depth as Diaw and Steph aren’t going to answer any of your problems if and when you run into them. Not going to lie, the team is in a little bit of trouble.

Knicksfan,
Nice work. the assists, points, blocks, boards are all there. Both percentage categories are a bit of a question mark. You have solid fg percentage guys and bad fg percentage guys (Kidd, Rafer, Steph. Jackson, Zach is eh, etc.). Overall, nice job. Maybe grab one more three point shooter at some point (J-Rich won’t do what he did last year under LB).
October 27th, 2008 at 10:48 am
The Fantasy Doctor says:
Quedas,
8 teams? Wow. The team looks good, though with only 8 squads, everyone’s looks good. Dwight gets a HUGE boost without having to concern yourself with free thrown. I know you have Howard, but you could probably use one more shot blocker and you definitely need one more three point shooer.

G-United,
First off, don’t cut AK for Ricky Davis. Drop that thought right now. You’re going to win assists with CP and Kidd. That’s always nice. Blocks (you need AK for this) and boards you should be good on as well. By far your biggest hole is three’s. With a 7 player league you should be able to find a high 100’s three a year guy… maybe two of them. Hard thing to find on the waiver wire. sort it by category and see who is there.

The Fantasy Doctor says:
Xavier Garcia,
Amare doesn’t qualify as a center in your league? Definitely start Jeff Green over Perkins. Perk isn’t going to do much for you. You know I’m a Darko guy but it’s wait and see. If he gets 25 minutes a game he blocks 2 shots, grabs 6 boards and scores 7/8 points. That’s third center numbers but not awful. the 14 team league makes it hard to have a good bench but you have a lot of reaches in there and need one of them (Gordon or Sessions) to do something for you. Varejao won’t be that guy unless there are injuries. Other concerns – the 3’s. Pierce and Chauncey need to do it all for you. that should win you a couple weeks, but most you’ll be in trouble. 14 teams are very tough. You’re probably in the upper half, but are going to need to make a move at some point for a big man and threes and have to hope that the bench comes through.

bamba,
the point guard/pf thing is 100% real. Biggest concern with your team – blocks. Bosh hasn’t really blocked shots like you’d think he would (nice preseason though). Bogut was better but still under 2 per game. I like Collison but he has never been a consistent performer. Same with Prince. You need Crawford to get out of this funk now because you need his three’s badly. If you get them, you’re good there. If you don’t, get looking. I like the Duhon pick up. you should play him. he’ll help with the assist category, which you need. For a guy who was going to draft point guards, you didn’t really draft point guards! You’re going to win some and lose some weeks and really don’t have any sure winning week to week categories with the possible exception of fg%.

With 12 teams, the end of the roster should be better. Nick Young and Farmar should’t be on the roster. There have to better options on the waiver wire. The teams not bad though.

with a 12 team league there is no way Delonte should be your starting point guard (and Rid be your other guy). something went wrong there. You need assists, blocks, and possibly 3’s depending on Crawford. Your bench isn’t very deep. You have some work ahead of you.

DETROIT KEVIN,
Nice work. It’s tough with a 14 team league. You’re inevitably going to end up starting a Scola, Green and Gooden. I’d start Marvin Williams over Gooden (though I haven’t looked at the game count). Your weekest category is blocks. You need Kaman to be last year Kaman and for Bosh to be preseason Bosh. All possible though.
October 27th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
The Fantasy Doctor says:
sweetv0mit,
You get Amare and Chauncey and trade Duncan and Ben Gordon? NO BRAINER. DO IT NOW. Nice draft. you need assists but Chauncey will help. Get that deal done.

We have a highly competitive 10 team league and went really deep into the draft this years: 20 players. PG, SG, SF, PF, F, C, C, Util, Util, Util and 10 Bench. With categories: FG%, FT%, 3PTM, PTS, OREB, DREB, AST, ST, BLK, TO.
Here’s my team, I drafted 4th, 18th, and 23rd to kick it off. Could you please tell me know if you notice any weaknesses. Brandon Bass is on the waivers still and I have my eye on him. (as the waiver wire is obviously thing)

Good team. You’re right that you need assists, BUT what you really need is points. You have a lot of guys that do good things but other than Dirk, no big time scorer.

October 27th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
The Fantasy Doctor says:
Brandon,
Sounds like a great league. With a deep bench, I’d probably prefer to stash Bass more than Kapono. One injury and Bass is a nice 3rd or 4th forward. We all know who Kapono is… including the Raptors. Nice work though. Great depth and you should be in every category with the exception being three’s where you may get smoked.

October 27th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
The Fantasy Doctor says:
Trisha,
First off either cut Chris Douglas Roberts or switch him with Rudy Fernadez. I like CDR but don’t think he’ll have immediate value. Maybe down the line this season. If you want him though, he’ll be available on waivers.Posey isn’t an ideal starter either. You’re good on boards and threes and okay on assists. Someone has to be out there instead of Roberts. Who’s on the waiver wire?
October 27th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
The Fantasy Doctor says:
Celtics 18,
For a 14 team league, your squad looks very good and well balanced. The bench is paper thin but that’s to be expected. You need a second assist guy. That isn’t going to be Nate if that’s what you are thinking.
October 27th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
The Fantasy Doctor says:
JP,
I like him. He’s a year or two away and that team has a crowded back court but I think he’s a legit back up fantasy point guard.

Thanks for the feedback. Drafting 9th, I had Bargnani locked as one of my final picks (Barnes, Bargnani, Stuckey) but he was snaked from me by the 10th manager who picked up Bargs in the bounce between my picks. Do you see a similarly talented player (Raptors homer here) or should I let the first couple of weeks play out (watching Darko, Ty Thomas and players of that ilk) in the hope that Bargs comes out lacklustre and that manager drops him outright?

Hamond,
So you went Wade with the 5th pick? You need blocks and threes. Blocks really don’t exist on the squad with the exception of Bosh, who isn’t a protypical shot blocker. With the exception of Joe Johnson, your team really doesn’t hit threes.

First of all, I’m all for the gut feeling with the Matrix. I’m cool with it. I hear you about the scoring threat. After JRich, you don’t have much scoring. You have decent intangibles though so let’s see what happens the first few weeks before you look to make a trade.

I think Sessions is going to have to earn the burn and that might not happen for a bit. It will happen at some point this season. I think it’s cool to cut him but definitely make sure he’s on your radar. We’ll talk a lot about him on the daily fantasy. Of those guys… Funny thing is, it’s probably Steph that you want to pick up. After that Posey and after that Battier. Let’s see how Steph looks early on though, especially with Crawford struggling.

♦King Me♠, Wait and see how Collison plays before you rush out and cut him for Ellis. Your assist deprived. Just Devin Harris, Barbosa, and Wade won’t cut it. Still, you’re in good shape everywhere else.

The Fantasy Doctor says:
Armchair Sportman,
In a 10 team league you shouldn’t have to settle on Perk to be your center. Most likely something went wrong at the draft but still there are better options out there on the waiver wire I’m sure. Even Garcia and Maxiell shouldn’t be owned in a 10 team league. Who’s on the waiver wire?
October 28th, 2008 at 10:27 am
The Fantasy Doctor says:
Jason,
For a 16 person league, I think you did alright. You’ve got everything with the exception of blocks and honestly, you may have to say peace to that category. You’re in great shape in assists, 3’s, and points and look solid in the percentages. You should win some and lose some in boards.

October 28th, 2008 at 10:30 am
The Fantasy Doctor says:
JoJo Down Under,
Interestingly there has not been a lot of roto leagues that have submitted. You look pretty solid. I’d go Jameer over Moon. Moon isn’t going to help much and Kidd and Nelson should help you be near the top in assists. I’m not a big Garcia guy and would go Peitrus there or even a Marquis Daniels in week one.
October 28th, 2008 at 10:31 am
The Fantasy Doctor says:
Deez,
No. Caron does too many good things for you and probably will average close to 6 boards. Give it a few weeks and see how it goes.
October 28th, 2008 at 10:33 am
The Fantasy Doctor says:
Jei,
No idea what a noob is but I’m going to guess it isn’t good.
Having both Monta and Manu is going to sting. That’s tough. Oberto isn’t helping you anywhere unless you’re the first league in history that has a category for setting screens and/or picks. Grab someone like Marquis Daniels or even Antonio Daniels for Oberto. Might be a tough run. Try and stay afloat until Manu and Ellis get back. Good luck.
October 28th, 2008 at 10:35 am
The Fantasy Doctor says:
Anthony,
100% Howard should start over Stuckey in week one. We have no idea what we’re going to get out of Stuckey and there is a very good chance it will be inconsistent. You need scoring on this squad and Howard will help there. You’ve evidently sworn off assists.

Fantasy Doc,
First my disclaimer – This is a different league than most. 10 team weekly H-T-H league.
Scoring is:
Assists 1 point / Points 1 point / Rebounds 1 point
Blocks 2 points / Steals 2 points
Turnovers -2 points
Based on that scoring, how do you think my team will perform? Do you see any changes that should be considered?
Start 3 guards, 3 forwards, 2 centers
Guards: Iverson / Vince Carter / Bibby
Forwards: Josh Howard / St. Jackson / RJefferson
Centers: Dwight Howard / Biedrins
Bench:
Monta Ellis
Rodney Stuckey
Matt Barnes
David Lee
Jason Maxiell
Darko Milicic
Should I move Josh Howard to guard and bench Bibby to allow Matt Barnes into the starting lineup? Any thoughts appreciated!

Future Bulls GM,
With your league all you care about are positive stats. Positives for Bibby is that his fg% stinks but doesn’t mean anything and he’ll get you a steal game plus some decent scoring and assists. Obviously the negative is the turnovers. I’d probably stay with Bibby for a couple weeks and see how it goes.

But my question is, with Matt Barnes, Nene, Grant Hill, Marc Gasol, Jeff Green, and Hakim Warrick all on the waiver wire do you recommend making any moves or sticking with my guns and seeing how my team plays out the way it is.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
The Fantasy Doctor says:
Runner guy,
Overall nice work. You’re asking a lot of Rose for assists but you should be in a win some/lose some position with AI, Mayo, and Rose. I’d love to tell you that Livingston will help with the category but I think that is way down the road. Other than that, you could use another blocks guy. Overall, solid.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
The Fantasy Doctor says:
Smitdog,
Great job with the entire starting squad. I really don’t see any glaring holes. That being said, you need some waiver wire pickups because the current bench probably won’t cut it. You’ll get em though.
