Don Nelson Is Disappointed In Marcus Williams

Marcus WilliamsMarcus Williams

After featuring a consensus top 10 NBA point guard (Baron Davis) last season, the Warriors have fallen so far that they could very well start the season with the worst starting PG in the League.

With Moped-gate keeping Monta off the floor, Golden State’s brass was hoping that Marcus Williams’ passing ability would translate well to Nellie’s run-and-gun system. But Williams has struggled mightily to pick up the in’s and out’s of the offense, and it looks like he’s lost the starting job.

“I expected more, and we haven’t seen it yet, and it’s getting late,” said Don Nelson.

Instead, it looks like former Duke G/F DeMarcus Nelson will take the reins when the Warriors host the Hornets eight days from now. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s not C.J. Watson, it’s DeMarcus Nelson. The 6-4 Dukie who didn’t play a lick of point in college has supposedly had a great summer, but is it really possible that he’s progressed enough to be a starting one? I’d say that there’s a better chance that Nellie has officially taken the plunge into the deep end.

“DeMarcus Nelson would be the fifth option on our NRF (Nike Recess Federation) team,” said Patrick Cassidy, Dime’s Editorial Director.

Has any other team in the League had such a drastic drop-off in talent at one position over the course of a single off-season in recent memory?

    michael jordan—>randy brown

    lol @ #1

Well that’s bad news for all 3 of you marcus williams fans out there.

In terms of dropoff, wasn’t Shaq followed up by Andrew DeClerq in Orlando?

  4. loganlight says:

I will say that DeMarcus has a nice quick step and can elevate very well… but you’re right, a point he is not. At least not now. But for Nellie’s system all you need is a motor that doesn’t stop and a short memory.

I think Marcus the Great has the best fall off recorded… I’m not going to try and compete with that.

  5. Michorizo says:

Randy Brown? I thought it was Pete Meyers

  6. JDig89 says:

I dont know but Shaq was followed up by Mark Blount in Miami.

  7. JC says:

Magic -> Sedale Threatt. I mean Sedale could go, but thats a drop off… And Randy Brown was a PG, right? I thought it was Pete Meyers who replaced MJ… I remember them saying he was “the man that replaced Micheal Jordan.” Who knows if Demarcus can do it? Its not like he’s a bum. Let’s not hastily jump to conclusions.

  8. Bone0315 says:

Pete Meyers replaced MJ when he retired after the ‘93 season. I think Ron Mercer (UK Legend) replaced him after the ‘98 chip.

  9. Kudabeen says:

What offense in GS? What they run in the half-court? The half court break?

It’s about effort for Marcus, but that has always been the case. Guys act like they are too cool to sweat and scrap. IT’s not enough to get on the court, show slick handle, and slick passing skills. This guy is compeiting against two guys that are in top shape, know how to scrap, and go hard all the time…It’s hard for him to get away with giving 80% when the other to PGs are giving 11)%…

    Marcus Williams = Omar Cook?

Demarcus didn’t look bad in the last game I saw. He had a few nice dishes and when he knew who he was covering he played good D. I really thought CJ would have taken that starting spot by now, but it’s Don Nelson, so who knows how he evaluates a good PG for that “system” they run in GS…

  10. QQ says:

Whoever replaced Bird when he retired in ‘94.

  11. chriscrosstopher says:

don nelson always does shit like this. demarcus nelson isn’t starting. don nelson is on the same level as phil jackson in terms of bullshitting

  12. JHov says:

    Shaq–>Chris Mihm, Kwame Brown
    Amare@Center–>Shaq@Center
    J.Will–>C.Quinn

  13. Coop says:

The problem in GS is that asshat in charge of the gameplan; ‘Nelly’ might be HoF but he’s a clown. Never win anything in the post-season, always whining about this and that. Get rid of him, Mullin, and blank Monta’s contract while you’re at it. Start fresh.

  14. Brown says:

How much you want to bet the Warriors take a PG with their lottery pick next year? Ricky Rubio or Brandon Jennings would look nice.

I haven’t seen the team play this year, so I’ll hold off on criticizing Williams or Nelson for now.

    @ Andrew/Dime
thats pretty cool and necessary to quote your own people (Pat Cassidy). More quotes from people around your office wouldnt be a bad thing either since many of the readers are familiar with everyone you’ve mentioned on the site (more than once). Thats funny though. Marcus williams potentially losing the starting pg spot is not funny. i guess there are certain people in certain situations that you just shouldnt be pulling for cause they might definately dissapoint (williams, eddy curry, ricky davis (when he got a fresher start in boston…and then again in miami…)

  16. DeMarcus says:

DeMarcus Nelson is just more competitive and athletic than Marcus Williams. It’s that simple. The best players in the league are ultra competitive and hate to lose (MJ/Kobe/KG). This separates the men from the boys. Marcus is weak minded and is not competitive. His career is almost over. This is why Bill Walker will be a good player in the NBA. He’s psycho-competitive. You need to be that way to be a great player.

  18. dillinger says:

Agreed. A competitive streak ensures that you always bring your a-game on the court. That must be the reason why marcus williams fell all the way to 22 on the draft board even though he was considered to be a top five talent.

omg woooooo i know dis may not work out to well but i dont frickin care.undrafted to starting point guard in a matter of months..GOOD LUCK DAMARCUS NELSON!!!i hope u can succeed homie.i believe
