It was almost the Oklahoma City Sunset … or the OKC Pioneers
I just wrapped an hour-long conference call with the TNT announce crew of Marv Albert, Reggie Miller and Doug Collins, and a bunch of other media outlets. (More extensive notes on the way throughout the day.) During the call, Marv revealed that while he was doing audio work for NBA Live 09 over the summer — when the Oklahoma City franchise had yet to reveal its new name — he had to go through 25 possible names and record sequences for each of them. Among the candidates Marv named:
Roughnecks
Pioneers
Thundering Herd
Wildcats
Bison
Lightning
Sunset
“‘Thunder’ seems to roll off the tongue after that,” Marv joked.

I hate this OKC team more than is possible to explain by words…but the name isn’t that bad.
I could just as easily see myself harping on a name like Lakers, Super Sonics, Trailblazers, Spurs, Knicks (Knicker Bockers), 76ers, etc.
Come on, almost all of these names sound ridiculous until you’re familiar with them.
