Jason Maxiell Got Paid Too
After we told you earlier about Andrew Bynum’s extension, Jason Maxiell decided to re-up with the Pistons for $20 million over four years.
The deadline for him to reach an agreement was today, but word out of Detroit was that the 25-year-old was going to decline the offer and see if he could get a better deal next summer.
At only $5 million a year, the Pistons got a steal. Although he lost the starting spot to Amir Johnson, look for Maxiell to play a vital role for Detroit this year.
If you were Maxiell, would you have held out to get a better deal next summer?

not at 6’4″…though 7 milli seems more reasonable.

Cha-ching. Given the volatility in the economy and decline in discretionary income – leading to lower ticket sales, etc. – I laud his decision.

If you think the mid-level is about 6 then that amount is about right really.

Detroit originally offered him 3 yrs at 15 mill and he turned that down. Turns out, he doesn’t have to wait until next summer to get that extra year at the same 5 mill/yr rate. Good pick up for Detroit as he is a solid role player and will have value in future trades (if any).

The Pistons were under the cap for next season and just spent $9mil on Kwame Brown (why two years?) and Maxiell. Wouldn’t it be better to go out and try to get a top player? Imagine Carlos Boozer moving to Detroit, you pass that up for role players? I’m not wild about that strategy, especially with Rasheed aging.
It’s a fair contract for Maxiell. Next offseason he could have gotten one more year but I’m not sure how much more per annum he could have gotten. With the Pistons having 5 legit bigs it’ll be hard for Maxiell to break out well enough to demand a larger deal. Maxiell did well. In terms of the contract it’s a solid deal for Detroit too, although I’m not sold it was their best play.
