Michael Beasley Wants To Be MVP

Michael BeasleyCould he be the MVP?

Michael Beasley probably couldn’t tell you who Maurice Podoloff is, but “The Beast” has set his sights on his trophy.

“I want to be MVP, no disrespect to nobody,” Beasley said Monday after the Heat’s practice at American Airlines Arena. “I don’t ever want to be second best. I feel I can walk down those steps to the locker room and be better than everybody else . . . I think going for Rookie of the Year is selling myself short.”

Wow. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the confidence. Love it like a Game Four predication in the playoffs, but come on Mike. Not only are you gunning against Kevin Love, O.J. Mayo and Derrick Rose, but you also have to battle a determined Greg Oden for the Eddie Gottlieb trophy.

And if he’s serious about winning the MVP, he’s going to have to take out Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, Kevin Garnett and LeBron James – an elite group that Beasley will probably be watching from the sidelines in Phoenix this February.

Note: Only two players have won the MVP award as rookies: Wilt Chamberlain (1959-60) and Wes Unseld (1968-69).

    not a chance !

    chris paul baby .

  2. AY says:

uh, how about just taking getting the ball from wade and marion. i’m sure marion, a guy who tried to make amare and nash understand their place in the totem pole (beneath him), will make quick work of the rookie. Too bad the daddy isn’t around to ask him how his ass tastes.

  3. T Dubbs says:

Wow, was Kevin Love really just mentioned as a possible ROY candidate?

  4. SteveNash says:

    Stern gonna enjoy that quote

  5. miamiVIS3 says:

I hate when people kill guys for setting lofty goals it’s not hurting anybody let the man dream.

  6. Michorizo says:

He must have got contact high when he was hanging with Chalmers.

  7. that's whats up says:

won’t even be MVP of his own team, but that at least means he’ll give the effort

  8. Blue says:

i don’t think b-easy seriously thinks he’ll be MVP in his rookie year…he’s just tryin’ to psyche himself out!!

  9. Jah says:

I like the talk…only if the actions to back it up are consistent.

    I’m rooting for Beasley.

  10. QuEsT??? says:

he said he is better than dwade and shawn marion, i like the confidence basketball is a mental game, but u have to back it up, i dnt think he is better than marion, nevermind wade. maybe in the future

  11. control says:

This is more than a dream, this is a crack induced holiday.

  12. smity far away says:

i agree with “thats whats up”. i’m taking what he’s saying as a promise that he about to bust his ass all season and put forth effort not seen before from him on this level (um…because he aint never been at this level before…) we’ll see. setting himself up for mvp should at least (if he falls short) see him gettin (landin on) that roy award…

  13. dagwaller says:

Hopefully for all of our sakes he just tries as hard as he can to play good team basketball. I kind of wish he had said (though I didn’t read the whole article) that he wants to win the title, not talk about individual accolades. Or that he had said something about how great D Wade is and how HE’ll get the MVP.

That having been said, if you ask every player if his team can win the chip, they’re going to say yes. If you ask every player if he can be MVP, they’ll probably say yes.

    Except for Eddy Curry.

  14. Taj says:

Man I like this guy, but he’s gotta watch himself! I wonder if he’s got a hat in that bag, cause he can go fuck his hat with that prediction! But I do like his game and his confidence! It sounds like a typical example of the hype going to this guys head!

  15. George W Kush Sr says:

He sounds like Keyshawn Johnson did

  16. nick says:

gotta love that swagger. but the chances of him getting mvp this season are like the chances of anyone winning the lottery, not good.

  17. Magnifico says:

Good thing about Beasley is that he has at least some chance to do this – get the MVP award. Lottery type chance but chance nonetheless. I still hope he tears up the L and gives Oden a good fight for the ROY.

I’m waiting for Scalabrine to say he’s gunning for the Best Sixth Man award…

  18. darkdefender says:

    eddy curry for DPOY

  19. ITZMR2U says:

Money’s swagger is ridiculous. Big ups to Beastley for that. Yet… like most have already posted, he’s got a gang of obstacles. He’s gotta stay healthy, go out every night and rip everyone in front of him a new one, on TOP of playing a season that’s 3 times as long as any season he’s EVER had. MVP? Holla back in 5 – 6 years. Can’t blame Money for thinking big.

  20. Sam says:

    George Karl for COY.

  21. Aron says:

Come on guys. I’m not trying to hamper anyone’s goals, but Beasley said he’s the best player in his locker room and D-Wade is in that same locker room if I’m not mistaken.

Side note: D-Wade could be the MVP.

  22. Potipot says:

whether Beasley wins the mvp or not, expect the heat to play exciting basketball and maybe produce some more wins.

they’re just a decent point and some vets to be a solid team in the east.

  23. Dagomar says:

Remember when Wade said this guy was “Big Manning” him? Now we know why. Apparently Beasley is the better player!

  24. Ansonious says:

Yeah he must be doing more than reefer to come to that conclusion, I’m sure thats what every player says year in and year out, and all he’s doing is making himself a target. I’m out like me winning the lottery peace!

  25. bamba says:

“an elite group that Beasley will probably be watching from the sidelines in Phoenix this February.”

    PHOENIX? WHAT AND WHY?

  26. Aron says:

    @bamba
Haha. All-Star game baby. Beasley ain’t making the squad.

  27. bamba says:

    @ Aron

    Ohhhh right right, thanks dude

  28. QuEsT??? says:

@ aron thats what i said, that beasly thinks he is better than shawn and dwade

  29. solomon says:

Michael Beasley Wants To Be MVP? sounds like rook smoked too much weed… he’s talented and all, but we’re talking NBA, rook… all world talent… he’d probably be ROY, but MVP? smoke weed everyday!

we’re out like snitching (at least beasley aint one)

  30. solomon says:

and did anyone notice (or maybe i didn’t) – he wants to be MVP, no mention of winning the larry o’bie… kid’s one helluvah talented self-centered self-serving selfish SOB…

we’re out like team 1st mentality

  31. Coop says:

    Stupid tart

  32. M Intellect says:

He plays with a real MVP candidate and a perrenial all-star and he says this?

This is why you don’t leave college early…

  33. YOUNGFED says:

Has there ever been ROY MVP?

  34. Lauri says:

Wilt and Wes Unseld were ROY and MVP

  35. dc says:

Beasley didn’t say he was better than Wade or anyone else. He said he can be. That just means the young man is willing to put in the work to be the best. If everyone had the mindset of “I’m no good. I can’t be better than these guys.”, we wouldn’t have a league worth watching. It’s kinda like the rap game. Everyone can’t be the best, but if they didn’t think they were the best, there’d be no point in rapping.

  36. shake&bake says:

I have no problem with any player wanting to be the best in the game. Also, you pretty much have to be on a winning team to be MVP. He didn’t guarantee that he was going to win the MVP, he just set a goal to be the best. I don’t see what’s wrong with that.

  37. justice says:

Top 10 ways to make yourself a target for vets..Paul Pierce and every other 3 is somewhere circling the date they play miami..

  38. Coop says:

I think Riley’s going to play him at the 4 :)

  39. Justin says:

I wonder how that “confidence” is going to play out considering he is playing on the same team as an actually viable MVP candidate when healthy

  40. Lady Luck says:

    “miamiVIS3 says:

I hate when people kill guys for setting lofty goals it’s not hurting anybody let the man dream.”

    Exactly.

You guys have to remember that you are talking about the dreams of a very young man. It is okay for him to dream big, because in order for him to obtain that goal he will have to put in the work. He is attacking his goal head on. The thing about success, it doesn’t come easy. But when you are young in life you don’t understand those obstacles, so you think that everything will come pretty easy because it has so far. That’s why rookies hit the “wall” halfway through the season. The successful players learn to prepare themselves throughout the year to be able to sustain a whole season. It’s called experience. And he has only his experience to go on right now. His interviews will sound a lot different in January. Nothing wrong with him having lofty expectations.

  41. Greg says:

He didn’t actually say he was better then Wade, he said he thought he could be the best player in the locker room.
