Mike Beasley Isn’t Starting In Miami

Even though Shawn Marion trade rumors are rampant throughout Miami because Matrix doesn’t necessarily fit in with the “cornerstones” Dwyane Wade and Michael Beasley, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra isn’t convinced that “Be Easy” is starting material right now.

“We’ll have to wait and see how he progresses,” coach Erik Spoelstra said Wednesday. “Right now, he’s in a good rhythm offensively. And defensively, there are some things he needs to be more aware of.”

I’m surprised. I thought Beasley’s jumper looked incredibly smooth against the Nets the other night. But even if Mike were putting up his Kansas State offensive numbers right now, Spoelstra has made it perfectly clear that you have to play D to start for him. In his interview with the Sun-Sentinel, Spoeltra talks about how Mike’s got “a long way to go defensively” like four times.

“Michael still has a ways to go, particularly on the defensive end,” Spoelstra said.

There it is again. And as usual, Beasley couldn’t be cooler about this. He’s even said that he prefers to come off the bench, deferring the decision to his coach.

But do you think that Spoelstra might have another reason for putting the rook on the pine? As a young coach who obviously isn’t exactly battled-tested yet, might this be a move to show who’s boss? Or is Beasley’s D that unacceptable?

Andrew Katz, you are ruining this website. STOP WRITING ARTICLES you writing is terrible. WHERE IS AUSTIN BURTON? now THAT MAN knows what hes doing. Andrew, I’m sure you’re a good guy, but sometimes you just gotta give up because you aren’t meant for the job. Pack your bags and go home.

I wanted to comment on your insensible insight in this morning’s article regarding Rashard Lewis, but I didnt have the time. I could’t let another one slip. This is terrible. Actually terrible suggesting that a coach would bench a ROY candidate to show who’s boss. The coach is there to WIN or his ass gets fired. Obviously he will put the best lineup (in his opinion) on at all times to ensure victory (ie. doing his job). People aren’t that childish. They will not scarfice their jobs, for childish power struggles to determine who is ‘boss’.
Andrew, your opinions are ludacris and really hope you stop writing for the sake of my sanity.

    Yours truly,
An avid fan of Dime who is contemplating to cease subscriptions becase of one terrible writer.

  6. Tyrone says:

Ain’t nobody waitin’ and seein’ whether Erik progresses is there? All them whinyass coaches thinking theyre the shit are full of shit y’all, Beasley is gonna be mad pimpin’ – he needs to start and get all them minutes y’all. Cat’s defense will come around.

    True thugs never lie.

  7. justice says:

Yeah he’s gonna start this is just a preseason b.s. mind game to get beasley to spend more time learning the defensive schemes…But imo when he does start he needs to be at the 4, they will limit his time at the 3, he has to work on that nba 3pointer and his handles i think legler said that too…he’ll be good for 15 and 6 a night wherever and whenever he plays

  8. Jah says:

Miami isn’t paying to keep Shawn Marion — expect another trade for a BIG…

  9. Jimmhumm says:

The heat are a defensive minded team however, who else can score from inside on the team? Maglore is old, Haslem is a hustle man tweener, and blount is a pretty boy scarred to body people up!

    @ this is terrible
At least its something to read or hate on during the day.

  10. YOUNGFED says:

    @Coop
I wasn’t going to say anything but thats the 2nd time today you’ve missed spell DEFENSE. It wouldn’t be that bad if it wasn’t spell in the article.

  11. QuEsT??? says:

@ 3 amen. im sry i dont wanna hate, but this posts have been sooooooo bad, dont u have other good ideas?? I know that u and aron have had really good posts but recently they have all sucked. soo step ur game up. no disrespect

  12. Three Stacks says:

Wow. It amazes me how some people can complain so passionately about free content.

  13. dc says:

I don’t know that I’m sold on the whole “he’s got a long way to go defensively” piece. He’s a rookie. Of course he has a long way to go defensively. The small & power fowards of the NBA are significanly better than what he faced in college. In my opinion, LeBron had/has a longer way to go defensively because he came straight from high school and was/is primarily a scorer. Nothing’s wrong with that. That just might be the reason Spoelstra’s giving to make sure Marion isn’t gonna start complaining about minutes until they can trade him. Besides, does Beasley have to start right away? He’s not Patrick Ewing, LeBron, Carmelo, Dwight Howard, or Emeka Okafor (people drafted to either save or be the cornerstone of a franchise). He was drafted that high because he’s that good, but primarily because the Heat were absolutely abismal with D Wade out most of the year.

  14. David Brandon says:

damn, some ppl are hella eager to hate tho. everyone has that “i can do it better” syndrome or something. if ppl REALLY didnt like what they’re always reading, then why keep comin back? only to complain?? i mean, sometimes there are some articles that i’m kinda on the fence about, but you gotta rememeber: these guys are the ones putting themselves out like that all the time. nobody’s kobe in here. no superstars of article posting. lol sometimes an article that gets put up really is ok but for some reason, ppl dont like it…i dont get it.
i’m just sayin that its not always gonna be a homerun or something. and if it really is that bad, then how come nobody’s offering ideas??

  15. QuEsT??? says:

@ david u must be dime’s number one dick sucker, tell me how does it taste? b4 u do that wipe ur mouth uve got a lil bit of white fluid near ur mouth.

  16. Dagomar says:

Not gonna hate on Andrew, but some posts recently have been a LITTLE weak.

But about this article, name me one hyped up rookie in the last decade or so who hasn’t had to work on his D? Guys get hyped and drafted for their offense. For the really good and dedicated superstars (Kobe, KG, Bron), the defense comes up to speed eventually. Others keep living on their offense. Looks like Miami’s coach is letting Beaskey know what category he’s got to fall into – assuming he becomes a star someday.

  17. Dave says:

Their bench is going to struggle often without one of Wade/Beasley on the floor. The don’t have enough scoring options. Whether Beasley starts or not, I think it’s likely he spends a good bit of time playing with the second unit.

  18. Blue says:

c’mon A-Katz, you can’t really think that Spo is lettin’ him know who’s boss. With the starting 5 they have (assuming B-Easy is coming off the bench) there are only 1.5 maybe 2 go-to guys on D.

Wade-Gambles too much… can be a good defender, but he usually needs to keep his energy for offense

Quinn-Although i like his game and he’ll be good for them on offense, he’s like a boy among men on D

    Blount-It’s Blount!!!!

Marion-We all know the Matrix can get under your skin.

Haslem-He’ll bang around, but he’s not a stopper.

Now, i’d rather not have B-Easy playing his ‘Ole’ defense when my 7-footer can’t block jack! I’d rather put B-Easy in for his offense and put in Joel Anthony in there for shot blocking purposes!

And stop hating on the Dime guys…or STFU and start your own B-Ball Mag.

  19. David Brandon says:

    @ quest,

again??? you STILL wanna talk shit to me man. i dont get you quest. its like you have nothin better to do then worry about what the hell i gotta say. do you know how tired i am of hearin you run your damn mouth tho? lol! this shit is old dog…grow up.

this is the ONLY dude who’s still mad about that damn pass the mic thing HEEEELLA weeks ago! please tell me thats what you still trippin off of… hahaha! me an you’ve had this whole talk awhile back and i thought it was done then…let that mess die bro. if you really think i read the shit you post or come on here to get into w/ you….youre fuckin crazy.

hoop is bigger than you, quest.. leave it at hoop my man.

  20. QuEsT??? says:

this aint about no pass the mic man, u just have dime’s dick sucked 24 seven, u should be called supa head my man all u do is be all up on dime’s dick, get off of it already.

  21. QuEsT??? says:

btw this was a response to the comment u made about that i can do it better syndrome. and i dont care if u read it or not u still a dick sucka. u like that kid in class that no matter what the teacher said, ud be all up licking the teacher’s ass.

  22. Sweet Englsih says:

    @ QuEsT???

dead that, quest. i respect both your opinons but just sayin ‘dick sucka’ a hundred times when the person your clearly beefin with has made a valid comment and is discussin the route of the beef in the first place. Your makin yourself look uneducated and a little defenceless, so like David says, dead that.

Besides, Dime is a paper publication, and therefore, has no phallis.

  23. ENEW says:

Hey QUEST…leave the site please…too many people work to hard at Dime to have a clown like you on this site.
    GO AWAY!!!

As for all of you haters out there, the beauty of what this site is, is to debate the articles, debate the game and debate the opinions of each other. When it crosses the line it is a bit rediculous.

Whoever insulted Andrew Katz today, you are more than entitled to your opinion but you are ripping a guy apart sitting behind a computer screen and you are not even man enough to leave your name. Be a man, not a punk.

As far as Beasley goes, coming off the bench and playing against other teams reserves could be very good for the himself and the HEAT. You also have to remember the rookie wall that many hit their first year as they are used to a season where they play 30-40 games max with much less coast to coast travel.

Lets get some good stuff up here, the season is almost here!

    lol

  25. junior says:

the only way he is going to get better is by getting as much pt as possible. Look at Al Jeff and Stat they’ll both give you crazy buckets but their D is not good at all. Why not just move Marion back to the 3 spot and start the rook.

  26. josh tha roc says:
