Have Faith in the Knicks

Q is back with D'AntoniQ is back with D’Antoni

Those who have been down with dimemag.com for over a year know how I feel about my Knicks. Last year I proclaimed that they would make the playoffs as a 4th or 5th seed. Now, I know I was talking reckless when I made that statement and you guys in the comment section let me have it.

This year I am going to fall back with all the crazy talk and take a different approach. Last night the Knicks were in Toronto facing off against the Raptors in their pre-season opener. While I know it was the 1st pre-season game, there are some things I would like to address….

The Knicks are going to score A LOT this season.
Mike D’Antoni’s system is based on shooting the ball as quickly as possible. Last night NY was getting the rock up the court very quickly and efficiently. It led to easy baskets for Wilson Chandler, who is a more skilled Renaldo Balkman, and David Lee. Seven different Knicks finished in double figures. Excellent.

They play ZERO defense.
Just like D’Antoni’s Suns, the big knock on the Knicks will be their defense. The Raptors shot 49% last night. Even more astounding is that they shot 50% from three-point land. Yeah, I know they have good shooters (Kapono, Calderon, and surprisingly Will Solomon), but the threes these guys were knocking down were WIDE open. Every Raptor who played last night with the exception of Hassan Adams had at least seven points. Not acceptable

Jamal's Gonna Drop BucketsJamal’s Gonna Drop Buckets

The Knicks can rebound.
Against a Raptors team with Jermaine O’Neal, Chris Bosh, Kris Humphries and Jamario Moon, the Knicks cleaned the glass and grabbed 50 boards last night. Chris Duhon had 10 rebounds himself. A definite bright spot.

The Knicks look like they are ready for a change.
Like I said, it was the first pre-season game, but you could tell the Knicks want to get out of the NBA’s doghouse. Marbury came off the bench, David Lee and Zach Randolph worked very well together. Nate and Jamal…while they shot a lot, their shots weren’t bad shots. There is hope.

While I won’t make any proclamations, I will say that I am excited about my Knicks this season and I think we are gonna get busy. They definitely be exciting to watch and will with out a doubt bring some sort of life back into professional basketball in New York City.

Any team that likes to get the ball out and run for 48 minutes is fun to watch. I never really rooted for the Knicks, but this year I’ll be watching them.

  2. Frodo T. Baggins says:

First…Knicks suck…they need to redo the roster will a few exceptions like Lee, Duhon, and…

  3. Jimmhumm says:

I like the knicks in this system but seriously if they can’t beat toronto they can’t touch the Cavs, Celts, Wiz, Magic, Philly, Miami, or the Bucks.

  4. Kevin says:

One thing I’ve learned being a Raptors fan is to be a pessimist versus the norm. Local media hype up a team to be so much more than they’re capabilities will allow. If not a pessimist, be a realist. You still sound like a bit of homer, but one more terrible season and you’ll get there. Sorry bro.

  5. Jimmhumm says:

Oh for the record everyone Duhon is NOT better than Steph in any way. (except in the head department) Dude should start.

  6. Kevin says:

That said, the Raps are gonna kill it this season, and that the realist in me talkin.

  7. Christian Grant-Fields says:

    @ Kevin,
You guys will be tough this year. Calderon has game. I am not big on Bargnani but he’s aiight. The Will Solomon pick up is huge.

  8. rkirby says:

    FAIL…

  9. parinaz suns says:

you forgot to mention that they are going to turnover the ball… a lot

  10. Kobeef says:

Chris Duhon couldn’t shoot last night and made a lot of turnovers but 6 assists and 10 boards is a nice start.

I like the starting lineup Dunleavy used last night

  11. heartbreaker85 says:

d antoni’s system revolves around a pass first, shoot last pg. steve nash was the perfect cat for that, but duhon’s not THAT bad himself, he doesnt have the MVP plays, but he’s smart enough to pass to open teammates.

steph can come off the bench as a 2 guard, forget the height, d-wade is about 6″4, ditto with gordon and barbosa. the NBA is going small (howard’s only 6′11) so why not just run with it, its not like they have anyone outside of lee who plays defense anyway

  12. Michorizo says:

Ben Gordon would be nice in this new Knick system … but how do they get him? The Bulls are going to have to unload him by All-Star break or have to ante up some cash. Where does anyone see Ben after the All-Star Break?

  13. fallinup says:

I wouldn’t judge anything on the Knicks until about 20 games into the season. You can’t see how well D’Antoni’s system will work by comparing this team with PHX because they are waaay different. And you can’t see how well the team works until you see them play some actual games, against actual competition.

And plus, this is the Knicks. Counting your chickens before they hatch leaves you at the wrong end of a truck party.

  14. control says:

Don’t go and start talking all crazy about the Knicks even MAYBE having a good season just yet. NY has managed to mess everything up consistently in the last few years, and the only sure bet is that consistent need to fail. The first 3 game losing streak they have (first 3 games in season?), the selfish people on this team will turn on everyone else and all hell will break loose.

That said, they probably won’t slide back too much, it won’t be as dark a season as the Larry Brown “era”. It will look like it because a huge chunk of teams in the east have gotten better.

  15. Tyrone says:

Them Knicks are gonna be aight y’all. Them cats themselves a real stud coach in D’Antoni, who’s gonna make them cats run his shot-friendly offense y’all. With some real athletic cats in their team like Robinson and my man Wilson Chandler, them knicks are gonna be aight, if not tight.

  17. QuEsT??? says:

im sry christian but the knicks are going nowhere…@ tyrone wtf “true thugs never lie” wtf is that u a thug?? u an internet thug” lmfao gtfoh

  18. control says:

    Tyrone,

A group of cats is referred to a “pride of cats”, not “them cats”. Please update your ethug dictionary for future use.

  19. Brown says:

Now that Zeke’s gone (well, at least out of the spotlight), they shouldn’t be as bad as last year. At the very least they’ll seem better because there won’t be as much drama.

I’m with you Kevin. The Raps are gonna be good this year. I’m not sold on Bargnani either, but he’s played ok in their first couple games. We’ll see what happens now that the pressure’s off.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Gallinari doesn’t make it off the pine this year.

  20. MAYO~ 4~ROY says:

Duhon is nothing more than a back up point guard….I’m not sure what it is that he excels in, getting 10 rebounds from your point guard…I would be that excited about that….

Overall the Knicks looked better than they have in the past. But they still need a lot of work, even though your identity is not defense you have to play some D…I don’t understand why you can’t assign a defensive minded assisant coach to run your defense….ala Boston C’s

    Internet thug! LMAO!!!

  21. control says:

Chris Duhon getting 10rebs is a BAD thing for the Knicks, it means the big guys ain’t getting at it. Maybe the Knicks should spray the ball w/ some sort of pizza smelling cologne, then the Knicks bigs would be throwing down fists for the ball.

  22. Tyrone says:

Y’all don’t appreciate them nuances of true thug life. Haters go to rest. Becomin’ a thug ain’t just about the bling-bling y’all - cats have gotsa make sacrifices to become a thug.

    True thugs never lie.

  23. fallinup says:

    “cats have gotsa make sacrifices”

  28. SayItAintSo says:

The Knicks are a lost cause already. On a smilar note, let’s talk about politics and Sarah Palin’s bridge to no where.

  29. @dam says:

theres bound to be a post like this every year before the Knicks get hammered and some writer mofo loses all respect from their peers for this kinda lame prediction

  30. control says:

Cheering for the Knicks is now known as the Monta. It’s cool to do it, until everyone finds out about it and realizes how stupid you are.

  31. Tyrone says:

Y’all punks show up once to da hood and I’ll teach y’all loudmouths a lesson y’all losers will never forget - hate the hood, not the thug.

    True thugs never lie.
    Tyrone

  32. control says:

  33. BxBaller says:

    @ Christian Grant-Fields,

I knew I wasn’t the only one who thought they played pretty solid last night.

I think the Knicks will se solid this year, we might even slide in as the 8th seed. Seriously, there is no reason why Duhon should be starting. I’m not saying that he’s bad, but he’s not good enough to be a starter, especially when you have Marbury & Robinson behind him on the depth chart. We just have to work on the turnovers and playing some decent defense.

  35. knicks pleeze says:

Chris Duhon had 10 rebounds himself.
    But he had 7 turnovrers
I watched the recap in the morning @ some of his passes on the break were crazy(in a bad way)

  36. QuEsT??? says:

  38. @dam says:

  39. fallinup says:
