NBA Match Game, 10.31

Five matchups to watch on Halloween (if you’re not out getting lit):

Golden State @ Toronto: Stephen Jackson vs. Sam Mitchell
Captain Jack (26 pts, 5 asts) never stepped off the court in the Warriors’ opener, splitting his 48 minutes between runs at point guard, two-guard and small forward. And until Monta Ellis comes back, C.J. Watson gets healthy, Don Nelson develops more trust in DeMarcus Nelson, and/or Marcus Williams gets out of the doghouse, Jackson will have to get used to nights like that. So what will Raps’ coach Sam Mitchell do tonight? Jose Calderon is too small to guard S-Jack at the one, leaving Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon as the best options to shadow Jackson no matter what position he’s playing. Mitchell also might want to think about employing the extra-physical Joey Graham, who can do a lot to wear down Jackson if he’s gonna play the entire game. Oh, and there’s a possibility S-Jack will draw the assignment of guarding Chris Bosh for stretches during this one.

Sacramento @ Miami: Kevin Martin vs. Dwyane Wade
Two of the most efficient and prolific scorers in the game — and two guys who will have to carry their teams this year — go head-to-head. D-Wade will live in the lane and at the line, while K-Mart will get his from mid-range and beyond the arc. Martin struggled in his season opener, shooting an uncharacteristically bad 5-for-19 against Minnesota.

Chicago @ Boston: Derrick Rose vs. Rajon Rondo
Last time out D-Rose had a favorable matchup, with Luke Ridnour lined up across from him and playing at home. This will be the rookie’s “Welcome to the NBA” moment: on the road, against the champs, and with one of the League’s quickest and toughest PG’s in his face.

Orlando @ Memphis: Dwight Howard vs. The Three Stooges
Darko, Gasol and Haddadi star in the Red Stripe Beer “VERY UGLY” matchup of the night.

San Antonio @ Portland: Tim Duncan vs. LaMarcus Aldridge
The much-anticipated Duncan/Greg Oden matchup — which was supposed to happen on Opening Night last year — will have to wait a little longer. Instead, LaMarcus gets another turn against the best big man in the game. Aldridge didn’t look good in Portland’s opener against the Lakers (nobody on the Blazers did), while TD dropped 32 points on the Suns in his first game.

Marc played very well against Howard tonight, the kid doesnt play around, he is nothing like his brother. He doesnt let people just push him around in the post and get away with cheap crap. I really think part of it is him being raised in Memphis during his team years and learning to ball in a US city then having to go play with grown men in the tough Euro leagues.
