New Dwyane Wade, Same Story

Dwyane WadeD-Wade (photo. Nike)

If you had to pick an MVP from Team USA’s gold medal run this summer, you would have had to think about Dwyane Wade. Wade looked like a super-charged version of himself, doing all of the things that he does well, really well, and seemingly leaving all of his bad habits behind in the U.S.

Now that he’s back in South Beach – and thank goodness with the hair that he ridiculously cut off before the Olympics – we were expecting Wade to continue blazing the path that he started overseas. Basically, some of us were thinking that the Olympics was a precursor to seeing Wade perform at the level that he did for the ‘06 Finals for the entirety of the ‘08-09 season.

But after the Nets/Heat exhibition the other night, in which Wade turned the ball over eight times – making 13 total turnovers in two games – it looks as though he can’t be as efficient as possible if he’s playing on the ball. No matter how determined he is to prove to the world that he’s officially back – the Heat homepage right now has a “Something 2 Prove” campaign when you first navigate to the page – he won’t be able to do it unless he’s got someone to get him the ball where he can do damage.

And right now, neither Marcus Banks, nor Mario Chalmers has earned enough of Erik Spoeltra’s confidence to control the rock consistently. At the same time, Spoeltra’s system doesn’t seem conducive to Shawn Marion’s style. Setting up in the half court simply doesn’t play to Marion’s strengths.

More and more, it’s looking as if this team will have to play a halfcourt style, and that raises into even greater question Shawn Marion’s value here, versus his value in a trade.

With Michael Beasley looking just as NBA ready as his fans have imagined, it makes sense that Miami could swap Marion for a legitimate point guard. The question is, who? Would a package from Chicago including Kirk Hinrich be worthwhile? What about getting Jamaal Tinsley and some others from Indy?

If you’re Mickey Arison, do you try to move Marion before the season starts to address this issue, or do you wait, and jeopardize Matrix losing some trade value?

Marion will be gone before 09 gets here.

wade is still the illest in the league; kobe still the best, but wade the illest. he should have been mvp last year. without him…the heat would have gone 0-82!! i told you dime bums miami would suck before last year when yall were saying mo williams should have went to miami instead of re-signing with the bucks cause miami was closer to winning a chip again. i had to school you fools then….and i’mma school you pub fools now.

and why the hell is the new coach trying to run a half court offensive set? not nere player on the hear roster (except for maybe maglore—who is injured) can succeed playing half court style. they need to run and build on transition defense. let haslem rebound and the rest run up the court. what personnel does this pretty boy rook coach have to think he can executive half court style?

Ain’t nobody can doubt that Dwayne is the one of the sickest ‘n nastiest ballers in the league y’all. Cat just needs some ballers with him and he can take them Heat to the playoffs y’all.

I feel like we should prolly trade marion for a legit point and a decent 5..by decent i mean not blount, someone who actually has post moves

  6. Kobeef says:

I still think Odom as a point forward would be a great fit with this team. As long as Wade has another ball handler (no matter the position) he can do his thing. Marion and Beasley are not first-option ball handlers.

We haven’t seen a trade that makes as much sense as Odom for Marion in a long time. Phil’s complaints about Odom are part of his effort to make it happen if you ask me.

  7. Jah says:

Keep Shawn Marion. There are no other legit (available) point guards worth trading him for at the moment.

  8. loganlight says:

As a Heat fan I cannot wait to see Marion hit the road.

With that said, I agree with Jah. We can’t really go out and just grab a point guard… they’re not that available. Kirk would be decent enough, but we would need to get more than just Hinrich in a trade for Matrix.

Trade Marion… but not just for the sake of trading him. Wait it out and get something worth while for him.

    Equation to a Tyrone Post:

something something something CATS something something something SICK AND NASTY something something something Y’ALL.

    trust me people, every time.

but on a more seriouis note, i was at the exhibition at the o2 arena on Sunday and Marcus Banks looked as solid as anybody to get the ball moving from the point. His defence was a little lacking but his court vision was fantastic. Clearly he lacks experience but as the Lakers learned with Andrew Bynum, if you invest in a new talent that shows some potential, it can pay dividends. Am i just blinded my Marcus’ performance on Sunday or is anyone else thinking the same thing?

I hate to say this but the Heat should wait and see if the kinicks buy out marbury. That is the best possible course of action. Don’t trade matrix. Dude is good but at 17 mill (That’s D-wade, Lebron, Bosh, Melo, Redd dollars) He wont get but a semi allstar and some spare parts. Odom AND Fish is a good trade but PJ is still having Smush Parker nightmares ain’t no way he dropping his starting the turnover “machine”!

  11. marcello robertson says:

If they trade marion for anything less than an allstar they are bananas. Lamar would be a good trade and would have allstar stats, but not like the double double machine.

  12. RENO says:

IMO I think they should just wait for the release of Marbury and then trade Marion for Odom. I don’t See Miami having any better options than that.

  13. Celts Fan says:

It’s probably asking a lot, but do you think they could get Ty Thomas and Hinrich for Matrix? If so, you pull the trigger on that, right?

  14. sans says:

You’re looking at Gooden and Hinrich most likely, plus $17M off the books. Maybe even Noah. I think the Bulls are way to hyped on the Ty kool-aid to let him go.

  15. CitizenB says:

I think if the Heat were to make a move, here are the decent options:

Marion to Portland for LaMarcus Alderidge and Steve Blake
-PORTLAND finally gets a savvy veteran who’s still hungry
-Miami has Blake come home with Alderidge filling the whole in the middle

Marion to Memphis for Mike Conley and Marc Gasol
-Memphis gets a high flier that’ll be off the books next season
    -Miami fills its wholes

Marion to Chicago for Heinrich and Tyrus Thomas
    -Chicago unclogs its backcourt
-Riley’s had a boner for Heinrich forever

  16. CitizenB says:

    wholes = holes

  17. Demonik says:

I gotta say I would love to see Marion for Odom trade go down. Hell, you can even through in Colby to make the salaries work!

  18. David Brandon says:

    @celts,

i think you do if that were the case. you get younger and you address what you NEED. sometimes ppl dont think about trades in terms of what a team may need in contrast to who a player is. miami really doesnt need shawn. thats the real part about it. he could play there, but at what point do you have 2 guys doing the exact same thing on the floor?? miami has some time to pull the trigger, but they might wanna hurry up.

and if it gets that bad, memphis will trade away a young, talented pg for a bag of chex mix….seein as how they always get hustled anyway…

  19. doc says:

YALL GONNA DIE WAITING ON CHALMERS BUM ASS

  20. Meica says:

Trading Marion to the Bulls for Hinrich with a bonus piece thrown in (I’d love to see Ben Gordon thrown in there somehow, but I’m not sure if the Heat have an equatable piece) would be great for both teams.

The Bulls would get that inside presence they’ve needed for years, the Heat would get their PG, and that log-jammed backcourt of the Bulls would finally be cleared out. Sefalosha has the potential to be a great player as does Rose, so losing Hinrich wouldn’t hurt as much as you’d think. On the Heat’s side Wade could finally focus his attention on getting buckets and I think we’d all see a resurgence from both teams after last seasons let downs.

  21. miamiVIS3 says:

I really don’t see a problem with kepping Matrix but my solution if he has to go is
Matrix and Blount to Indy Marquis Daniels Rasho and Jamaal Tinsley come to the Heat.
or (and this one is kind of a long shot)
Matrix and Blount to Chicago for Gooden BG and Kirk

  22. dagwaller says:

    Ummm…Chris Quinn?

  23. chronically_ill says:

Why, oh why is Miami trying to run a half-court offense? With a nucleus of Wade, Marion and Beasley, they should be running the opposition off the floor!

A run and gun system will probably reduce Wade’s turnovers too, cuz he’s such a killer in transition, and he wont have to have the pressure of creating for his teammates all the time in half-court situations.

And Jamal Tinsley will be a disaster in Miami. After all that he’s done in INDIANA, what to do you think will happen once he lands on South Beach?
