Rick Carlisle Needs Josh Howard To Make 100 Three’s
Josh HowardI’m not sure what kind of coach Rick Carlisle is. He doesn’t fit into a particular mold as a “defensive-minded” guy or someone who preaches a quick trigger on offense. But during his four years in Indiana, he’s always had a guy who can really rain from beyond the arc. Reggie Miller clicked 134 treys in ‘03-04, Stephen Jackson went for 103 and then 117 in successive years, and Danny Granger sunk 110 in ‘06-07.
For Carlisle to exceed the success he had in Indiana this season in Dallas, he’s going to do it from beyond the arc. Even though Jason Terry is a veritable lock to break triple digits with treys (he’s made over 100 for the last eight seasons), Carlisle feels that Dallas needs a stronger presence from deep. And the player that they want it from is Josh Howard.
“I’ve encouraged him to spend a lot of time working on it this summer, and he has,” Carlisle said of Howard. “He’s one of the guys that’s got to mix it up the right way. He can get a jump shot anytime he wants, because people back off of him because of his driving ability.
When the Mavs made it to the Finals, both Dirk and Terry went over 100. Since that ‘05-06 season, Dirk hasn’t broken 80 in a single season.
Are you surprised that Carlisle named Howard as the guy that he wants to get going instead of Nowitzki?

Dirk is a three point shooter. Josh isn’t. He can shoot but his form just doesn’t make me feel comfortable with him jacking up hundreds of 3 pointers. He’s a slasher. Dirk is a shooter. You can’t just come in and ask people to change their entire identities. What’s he going to do next? Ask J-How to stop smoking and make him stand for the pledge?

How many championships has Rick Carlisle won as a coach? About as many as I have. Granted, he did win Coach of the Year in 2002 but was fired right after the season and replaced by Larry Brown. The guy has reached the conference finals, but only as an assistant. This “100 Three’s” thing is stupid. Josh Howard is versatile and that’s what makes him deadly. He’s one of the best mid-range players we have in the game along with Rip Hamilton. Don’t kill his game by asking him to throw up 25 foot shots when he can get layups.
By the way, Rick Carlisle did win one championship as a player with the Celtics in which he averaged 2 points. Him and Larry Bird are tight and Larry has helped him get coaching jobs, notably with the Pacers.

why the hell is the coach asking a non 3pt shooter to take 3s?
this is crazy and stupid. this is the problem with most coaches. they are trying to always change players rather than allow them to play to their strengths.
maybe josh howard will have 100 airballs from 3pt range this year. someone needs to keep track of that stat…..

Carlisle is a strong coach and got very close to leading the Pistons to a title one year; then he got unceremoniously dumped for no reason prior to the following year for carpetbager Larry Brown who inherited Carlisle’s team (a la Pat Riley) and won a title that following year. (And Detroit isn’t about to win another title any time soon true believers.)
100 3’s is not a lot over an 82 game season. He is JUST trying to enhance J-Ho’s game a bit and make him more of a weapon. Don’t get your panties in a wad over it.

Tell Josh he can skip the national anthem and that you’ll give him a nickel bag for every three he hits. Motivation, people!

Ric Carlisle needs Josh Howard to be in the news for his play rather than his offseason antics….let the team fastbreak and worry about Dirk and Jason Terry to provide points from the outside..Howard should focus on defense and getting points from the transition game.

Calm down people … If you read the whole article on: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/basketball/mavs/stories/100508dnspomavslede.aa71f6.html you’ll see that the coach wants Josh to regain his old 3 point form. He is a 35% 3pt shooter for his carrer and shot just 31% last year. He wants the mavs to have a better percentage from 3pt range. So, Terry and Dirk are the primary 3pt threats, Josh just needs to make around 35, 36%. That’s all. Also, the 100 3pt for the season is an assumption made from the Dime guys, not the coach. He is not demanding Josh to change his game.

Seriously, scottee needs to think a little bit before he posts.
Anyway, Dirk CAN shoot that well, and Terry WILL shoot that many. For the team to succeed, though, they need to shake things up. Even though they haven’t done as well since Dirk stopped shooting, they haven’t added a low post presence (at the 5, the 4 – allowing Dirk to slide to the 3 – or the 3), so maybe they figure that Dirk can handle that better than Howard. Hence, Howard shooting more from outside. I dunno – could work. Probably won’t. Should’ve been more active in the offseason if they wanted a shooter.

Dave says:
I think Dirk will break 100 three’s this season anyway. With Jason Kidd in town he now has someone who can get him an easy shot on the pick and roll/pop, he’ll start getting a lot more quality looks away from the rim. Carlisle says the Mavs offense will have more movement, and less iso’s, which should also free Dirk up more to spot up.
I think it’s a good call asking Howard to work on his perimeter shooting. The Mavs need an extra shooter since most of their wings contribute so little offensively. If Howard can make that shot it’ll serve Dallas well.
