Rip Hamilton’s Protege Doesn’t Back Down from Richard Jefferson
There’s no way this guy can talk trashIf there’s one place in the League to learn how to talk trash, it’s Detroit. Though KG might break out the most intimidating smack in the NBA, there’s something about the Pistons’ culture that breeds trash talkers. Since arriving in Motor City, Kwame Brown has even started to open his mouth when pushed to the edge by ‘Sheed. But even if everyone on this squad doesn’t jaw like ‘Sheed, Chauncey, and Rip, they’re all conditioned by their incessant talk in practice.
It’s clearly rubbed off on Hamilton’s protege, Arron Afflalo, who took Richard Jefferson‘s best verbal shots in the Bucks/Pistons preseason game Saturday night and in return, gave him hell, posting 28 points on 10-12 shooting.
“I loved it. I was his biggest cheerleader out there,” Hamilton said after Monday morning’s practice. “He got into it with Richard Jefferson and didn’t back down and that’s all I ask of him.
“He never backed down. He did an excellent job of taking the challenge at both ends of the floor.”
I’m impressed that Afflalo put up 28 – I thought he was a defensive juggernaut who left his offensive game in college. I’m just not sure as to whether I should be impressed that he did it in RJ’s grill. You’ve heard Jefferson talk before – he sure doesn’t sound like a dude who is 6-7, 230 easy. Frankly, it’s just as impressive to know that Afflalo has been Rip’s favorite target for battle in practice.
If you can handle the smack in Detroit, you can handle it anywhere.

Detroit is doing a good job of drafting good players, not necessarily big names, and developing them. They did it with Tayshawn, then their young bigs, and now their young guards. Saving Detroit that rebuilding mode by always being in building mode. Detroit has maintained a high level of basketball for many years now.
