Shawn Kemp Jr. Commits to Alabama

Alabama Crimson Tide

I know what you’re thinking. For a man with such paternal infamy, you had to know this day would come. The eldest child of former All-Star Shawn Kemp committed to Alabama, choosing the Crimson Tide over Ole Miss, Georgia, Auburn, Cincinnati, Nevada and Washington.

Now don’t think Shawn Kemp Jr. is getting a free ride based on his father’s name – in fact, he’s hardly known the man. Raised by his mother in Marietta, Ga., Kemp Jr. has never lived under the same roof as his father, causing him to have to make a name for himself.

“Some people say I play like my dad,” the younger Kemp said in an interview this summer. “I do what I do, but I’m trying to be my own person, too. I’ve had a lot to prove, to coaches, just everybody. But I’ve overcome it. I’ll handle it.”

As a 6-9 power forward weighing in at 215 pounds, Kemp Jr. is a leaner version of his dad and still growing. Already with a size 19 shoe and a 7-1 wingspan, doctors have told him that he should become a 7-footer by the age of 21. Currently, the rising senior from Cherokee High School in Canton, Ga. is ranked 12th nationally among centers and 96th overall by Rivals150.

running the same play 100x is not impressive. a 6’9 guy that can dunk is not impressive. doesn’t look like he has his dad’s hops

  14. karizmatic says:

I’m not impressed with his hops and he’s obviously going to need to get in the weight room. I do love his little hook shot, he’s already got more post game than his pops. lol. He’s one to keep an eye on, but I don’t see anything spectacular yet. We’ll see what happens in college. Good luck to him.
