The Lakers Will Win the 2009 NBA Championship*
Will KB24 win it this season? You noticed the asterisks didn’t you? While we don’t necessarily agree with the headline above, that is the projected outcome for this June according to Vegas.com’s NBA Championship Futures. At a current 3/1 clip, the Lakers are favored to win over the Celtics (7/2), Hornets (6/1) and Pistons (7/1).
While the Top 3 make sense to us, are the Pistons really that close to another NBA title? Sure the addition of a new coach Michael Curry and the emergence of Rodney Stuckey must have them continuing to think playoffs, but rising above the Celtics and Cavs is a long shot in my mind.
Rounding out the Top Ten are the Cavaliers (8/1), Rockets (8/1), Spurs (8/1), Jazz (10/1), Suns (10/1) and Magic (15/1) – all teams that with healthy bodies could make a run for the ’chip. Out of this group the Rockets and their West Coast version of the Big Three with Yao, T-Mac and Ron-Ron have to be the favorites to upset.
Nonetheless, if I was a betting man, I might throw down some of my hard-earned dollars on the Sixers (20/1), Trail Blazers (35/1) and Heat (60/1). With odds like that and mid-season trades abound, it might be worth the investment.

Yeah the pistons have one more realistic shot at the finals. Maybe not winning it all, but c’mon, if you had the nerve to say the Suns window hasn’t completely closed yet, then neither has the Pistons’!

Here we go again with the “proverbial” (see YOUNGFEDS word of the day for definition) Piston Bias. Geeesssh, already give it a break. How are we rising above a team that hasn’t made any changes a consistantly beat in the playoffs. GTFOH…!
BTW this article…..HATED IT!!! LOL

Funny how “investment” means “gamble” in this article. Is that really an investment? And if so, are you investing your money in the team you bet on, or are you investing in Vegas casinos? And if it’s the latter, is that truly a good investment? Hmmmmm….

@ Tyrone:
If the Lakers don’t win the championship this year, it will be at the hands of the HORNETS, not the CELTICS. Gambling’s right, Celts will get knocked off. They were one Boobie Gibson injury away from getting knocked off by the Cavs, and now the Cavs got Mo.

NBA Live ‘09 had Lakers vs Heat in the NBA Finals, with Lakers winning in 6. I’d be amused just to see the Heat make the Finals. As for the outcome, I respectfully disagree. D-Wade can do anything.
Anyhow, the Lakers should be a great team. They have great depth, established chemistry, a stupid silly front line, and Kobe.
Kobe vs D-Wade in the Finals would break the all-time viewer record.

Lakers are the “sexy” pick. Predictions this far off before the season aren’t really predictions, it’s more a “lucky” pick if you’re right.
In that case, outside the box I predict a Knicks v. Thunder finals!

Dang…if the Lakers end up facing the Heat in the finals, or ANY team with an opposing mega-star, I’d be mad concerned that they’d lose. Not because the other team is better, but because Karma would cause the Lakers to lose, just to get under Kobe’s and all his fans’ skin. It would drive us all absolutely ape-bat-$#%@-insane, and would provide all the Kobe-haters with enough fuel to bash him for all eternity.

Wait a minute, sure Detroit might sorta have a chance at a Championship, but the Lakers as the number one? It was a small surprise last year that they performed as well as they did. You have to admit that all of the chips fell right for them (getting the #1 seed because they don’t have to play in the far superior Southwest Division, having all of the other Western powerhouses beating and tiring each other out through the playoffs, and flat out winning games they shouldn’t).
Mark my words, the Lakers are going to let some people down this season. As for the Celtics and the Pistons, they better watch out too—this could be nearly anyone’s year.
October 15th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Meica says:
I mean, look at their roster! Aside from Kobe, they are not a championship caliber team. Odom & Gasol? Please, get real.

@ Meica:
You said “this could be nearly anyone’s year”, and then followed that up with “aside from Kobe, they are not a championship caliber team”.
So what about all the other teams whose year this supposedly could be? Cavs? Aside from Bron, they are not a championship caliber team. Suns? Aside from Nash, they are not a championship caliber team. Heat? Aside from DWade they are not blah blah blah. Point is, it’s NOT aside from them, you gotta include them.
